The Low Tech Lab Movie documents last year's Permaculture Technology Jamboree (PTJ) – an innovative and exciting collaborative event that seeks to push the boundaries and move permaculture technology forward for the greater good! The 2023 event is on its way and we're keen to find out your thoughts on what you'd like to see this year so we've brought in the penny vote (drum roll please)!!!

Over the next 3 days, vote for your favorite PTJ artifact by adjusting your Kickstarter backer amount by pennies. The top activities voted for will be featured in this year's event and may even make it into another instructional movie further down the track - so you can choose your own adventure! Use your vote to let us know what you'd like to see.

To participate, just change your backer amount to reflect your vote. For example, if your favorite PTJ artifact is the rocket hot tub, you would change your dollar amount from $100 to $100.13. It's that easy! Click Here for more info on how to change your backer amount.

The icing on the cake is that this year, the backer who votes and puts up the most coin will get a 2-day ticket to the 2023 PTJ!

If you want to buy a ticket for this year's event go here!

$xx.11 Round Wood Timber Framing
Round wood comes straight from the tree, with or without the bark, and has not been cut, squared, or planked. Timber framing is the process of making a building's frame out of wood.  Round wood is 2 and a half times stronger than the equivalent in dimensional lumber.  The truly passive greenhouse, Allerton Abbey, the round wood picnic table, the berm shed, and others are examples of round wood construction at Wheaton Labs
For the 2023 PTJ, maybe build a pavilion, a berm shed, or maybe something up at the Lab. Round timber shower shack?  Round wood staircase?  If round wood timber framing is your favorite PTJ artifact, vote by raising your backer amount by $xx.11.

https://permies.com/wiki/213701

$XX.12 Bodger Love
Bodging is an old way of turning wood that is used to make chair legs and other round parts of chairs out of green wood. Work was done near where a tree had been cut down.   You can also create other items using the bodger method.  For the 2023 PTJ, how about a whole bunch of bodger projects making amazing things from green wood - spoons, roundwood furniture, boxes, bins, counters, sinks, shelves, benches, etc.  Using mostly hand tools and little to no metal fasteners. If bodger love is your favorite PTJ artifact, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.12.

https://permies.com/wiki/213707

$XX.13 Rocket hot tub
At the 2023 PTJ, what about finishing the Rocket Hot Tub?  Paul and Mud had talked about building one that seated approximately 6 people.  They discussed different styles, such as heating it from the bottom, using copper pipe, and even digging a big hole in the ground and fill it with clay (firing it, to vitrify the clay) and have an unpressurized rocket water heater next to it.  It sounds exciting! If the rocket hot tub is your favorite project for this year's PTJ, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.13.

https://permies.com/w/213690

$XX.14 Solar Electricity stuff
Solar power is the process of making electricity from the sun's energy. This can be done directly with photovoltaics or indirectly with concentrated solar power. The photovoltaic effect is how photovoltaic cells turn light into an electric current.  For the 2023 PTJ, maybe bringing off-grid power to a new location at the Lab (Cooper Cabin?)
If solar electricity stuff is your favorite project for this year's PTJ, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.14.

https://permies.com/t/213695/PTJ-Solar-Power

$XX.15  Indoor rocket oven project
The rocket oven built using these plans at the 2017 PTJ can be adapted to be used indoors.  Rocket ovens are completely off-grid and leave a fraction of the carbon footprint of a traditional stove.  For the 2023 PTJ, maybe build an indoor version of the rocket oven.  If the rocket oven is your favorite project for this year's PTJ, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.15.

https://permies.com/wiki/213759

$XX.16 Dry stack moon gate
Dry stacked rock retaining walls are affordable and easy to produce.  Plus, you can do some pretty cool things like make a dry stack moon gate.  Rock lasts a lot longer than wood, meaning that if stacked correctly, your dry stack project could last a very, very long time.  For the 2023 PTJ, what about correctly stacking rock to have a wall with a 2-foot round hole?  If this is your favorite PTJ artifact, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.16.

https://permies.com/wiki/213708

$XX.17  Cob!
Cob is a natural building material made from subsoil, water, fibrous organic material (usually straw), and sometimes lime.  You can build cob homes, cob ovens, cob tubs, cob showers, cob kitchens...the list goes on and on.
For the 2023 PTJ, how about grading sand, mixing, testing, and building?  Basic cob, fine finish cob.  Finishing methods. Also natural paint, natural plaster, and natural dye. Mostly from stuff foraged at the Lab.  If cob is your favorite PTJ artifact, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.17.

https://permies.com/wiki/213710

$XX.18. Apothecary: from forest to pantry
An apothecary is like a pharmacy, but a collection of natural remedies, made from herbs and flowers, roots and leaves.  You can walk out into nature and find healing plants almost anywhere you look.
For the 2023 PTJ, a potential project would be the entire process of identifying, wildcrafting, processing, and creating a plant ally into a healing remedy (including how to properly preserve your plants, ingredients, and products).  If apothecary is your favorite PTJ artifact, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.18.

https://permies.com/w/213697

$XX.19  Flowforms
Flowforms mimic a mountain stream, oxygenate the water, help the breakdown of organic matter within the water (resulting in better-smelling water), and beneficially structure water. For the 2023 PTJ, a project making flow-forms to carry away rainwater run-off to a useful spot, using homemade non-gicky cement.  If this is your favorite PTJ artifact, vote by raising your backer amount by $XX.19.

AAARGH. The indecision. They are all so good! I wondered if i could add up the amounts of all the ones I wanted (pretty much all...) and put that in as my amount then figured it is probably missing the whole point of the operation being a poll that easily shows which ones are being voted for.... So after some pacing up and down i decided on the moongate as I just have to have one in my life now i've seen it

Here's a look at where we are with the current tally!

PTJ ArtifactTotal Coin
roundwood125.22

solar601.84
indoor rocket oven230.60

It looks like solar has a heavy lead, but dry stack , apothecary, and flow forms are tied!  There is still plenty of time for this to go in any direction!

Cast your vote today by increasing your backer amount by just a few pennies.  The PTJ artifact that wins is decided by the total coin pledged, not number of votes.  So, if you really want your artifact to win, the more you pledge for that artifact, the more influence it has!

Hurry up and get your votes in, time is ticking.   The Penny Poll closes at 2pm MT on Friday (4/7).  After the poll closes, no more votes will be counted. . . I'd love to see solar get some real competition!!

I'm curious if people just want all of the projects at the next PTJ and that's why they haven't voted...

This really helps us understand what you, the most important person in the room, want.   Obviously, no one wants cob projects...right?  Prove me wrong and vote today!

There are just hours left to cast your vote or increase your backer amount to get your favorite PTJ to win!  We count the votes by the amount of coin in each category, not the number of votes, so you can give your artifact the advantage by increasing the whole dollar amount as long as your pennies stay the same - you can only vote for one artifact.

I'm changing my vote to flow-forms because roundwood is clearly not going to win.  And it seems like there is already so much info on solar out there, but so little info on flow forms.

Who's with me?

Let's help Flow Forms beat Solar!!!

Beau, as much as I truly adore the roundwood, it's not something that is accessible to nearly as many people as the flow forms, which I just KNOW can be adjusted with little effort, into walkways, steps, garden bed surrounds, benches, bird baths, and so much more - I REALLY hope it wins!!

I Thought you were counting votes. from those numbers, Solar had 1746 more votes than Flow Forms. Solar-6946 votes/ Flow Forms-5200 votes. (I voted for Dry Stack, Flow forms is my second and Solar is last because there's plenty of info out there I think.)
Also, only one of the totals is possibly accurate, Dry Stack. It has the only total, 500.80, that when divided by it's multiplier, .16, ends in a whole number, 3130. All the other totals when divided by their vote cost end with partial numbers. Like Solar- $972.54 divided by $.14 is 6946.7142857142. Not possible. Odd thing too is that all through this, on the ones I checked, Dry Stack was consistently the only one that could be accurate.
Not trying to cause waves but I can't help it. I'm a mather! (Gives me anxiety when I notice stuff that really don't matter)

Oh, just kidding, Chris - the totals include total backer amounts, not just the cents!
