Staff note (Dave Burton) :

I am strongly keen on approving this BB. I am making some noise in favor!

Staff note (Mike Barkley) :

I certify this BB is complete.

To get certified for this BB, post three pics.

  - Your chunk of wood that you are starting with (about 16 inches long and 4 inches in diameter)
  - progress about half way through, with the hand tools you have decided to use for this
  - final product

I don't mean to be difficult, but I thought I saw an a PEP post somewhere that video was ok and I thought it would be more thorough than just 3 pics.

You have to complete all the "Badge Bits" for the Badge you want. Badge Bits are tasks that (1) Create a tangible product, (2) Can be documented with pictures and/or video, (3) Teach a skill through doing it.

I believe that my post meets all these criteria. Again, not trying to be difficult but there seems to be contradictory criteria.

Hi Brian, going over and above the requirements is certainly ok.  We're still working some of the kinks out of the process and massaging some of the BB requirements.  The requirements for any particular BB are listed in the BB and they change dramatically depending on which one you're looking at.  I've been burned by that several times when I just did a BB and later realized I missed some of the requirements.  In your case, I think the video is better than photos so I'm hoping it's approved.

Thanks, I can put up photos, but they'll probably just be stills from the video lol.

It's nice when things look good and balanced, but function rules all!

Years ago my wife compained about not having the right tool for pounding meat to tenderize it (for chicken fried steaks).  I went into the garage, grabbed about a 16 - 20 inch piece of scrap 2X4 and cut one end down to a handle (took about 5 minutes including both table saw and smoothing, I didn't spend much time because she was waiting).  If I had used hand tools, it may have taken 10 minutes.  The kids named it 'Mjolner' and my wife used that mallet for years (it might still be around somewhere) and used it whenever we needed to tenderize some meat.  It was the right weight and length to give a mighty whack!  I was always a little embarrassed because I had done a quick, sloppy job on it, but she said it was perfect for her use and wouldn't let me "fix it".  She said it fit her hand and was a good weight for her.

Right on..that's the beauty of making your own tools. You make them for you, and dont worry what other people think, as long as it's functional for you.

There is something to be said for craftsmanship however.
