Favorite Dances

Dancing has always fascinated me. It's one of those things that probably fascinates me so much because my mind simply can't comprehend it, and I can't do it. I imagine others like it as well, and I thought people might like to post videos and/or talk about their favorite dances/dancers. Maybe even some people here know a thing or two themselves and would like to show off...


To start off, the latest type of dance I have grown to appreciate is Industrial. The first time I saw it was pretty amateurish, and I thought it was quite comical, but some time later youtube randomly played a video of someone with real talent, and I was amazed at the style and how well it fit the music genre. It focuses heavily on arm movement, and closely following a strong, driving beat. It seems to be about fantasy and cosplay almost as much as anything (set in a dystopian future). I'm not a big fan of plastic and makeup and overly done up clothing, but for some reason I can really appreciate the artistry of the genre. In this one, Infected Jane doesn't do so well in my opinion, but Rotten Corpse is absolutely amazing. What impresses me with dances is when people move in a way, or with a speed that I just can't see as being humanly possible. She makes me think of some kind of ancient goddess of war, and I can only describe the dancing as ordered chaos, and it's lovely.

Ciwana Black is one of the best. Here is a rare and unusual video in plain clothes without all the makeup and cyber-locks with a sombre tone. I guess the moral is that dancing is a way to get away from or through the hardships in life.





Wendy Ailen is also really good and this video shows a pretty good example of both the feminine and masculine versions of dance in the genre:  (LANGUAGE WARNING for the music)

Great idea for a thread! ...I've always been fascinated by the art of dance, as well.
I'm currently a big fan of Tribal/Indian Fusion dance. The level of muscle control the performers exhibit is simply amazing, right down to the fingertips....

I grew up learning about different types of dancing. Sorry, I never heard of Industrial dancing.

I learned and loved Square dancing and Polka dancing was and is really big in the area where we had our homestead.  There are still big Dance Hall throughout Texas devoted to Polka dancing.

I was never very good at Ballroom dancing.

Then along came Rock and Roll and most of those dances stepped aside for new types of dancing.

Rap to me is strange especially with Country Music.

Hard to say what fascinates me more about this one ...the choreography or the costumes.

In any case, I find it uplifting to see the youth of a society embracing their culture & heritage through dance, and apparently having fun doing so!

I was born with rhythm, music, and two left feet. This is the best I can offer.

Gene mentioned in an interview that this was one of the most challenging routines he ever performed.

I'm glad you reminded me of this thread Ela, but coincidentally you also brought up the next dance form that amazes me: shuffle dancing! I've actually seen that video many times, and I agree it's a good one. Here's some more that really highlight the best of the genre, in my opinion. I'll have to start off with Party Rock Anthem, because..."Every day I'm shuffling!"

I'm a bad dancer, but I like to go out and dance at club nights sometimes, just because.

Dancing I love to watch: any type of bellydanc/middle Eastern dance.  South Asian dancing.  Irish dancing, both soft shoe and hard shoe, though I'll admit I like the hardshoe best, plus Ceili dancing.

The Cossacks have a pretty interesting take on dancing. Doing the moves look difficult enough, but I can't even imagine doing it in those boots!

I've been hooked on this vid for the past few weeks ...I find the choreography and outfits mesmerizing.

While I don’t object to dancing, I simply don’t understand it.   I suspect it is one of the many things I over think.

It may sound strange but learning to dance is definitely on my bucket list. The worst thing is, I live just twenty minutes away from a place that does private and public dance lessons. They even advertise that no dance partner is needed, that is good because my wife is the very jealous type and told me she cannot stand the thought of me dancing with another person even though she has no desire to learn.

It is really sad because I love the 30's and 40's era and so to learn the dances of those era and the Lindsey Hop would be what I would aspire for.
