Hello everyone, Welland in the Niagara Peninsula. I bought 12 land locked acres ( with an officially unopened road allowance) that have not been touched in 40 years. I cleared the areas that are now garden and trailer site. This will be my second growing season. I have got a lot of ideas from this site.

Hello Everyone,

31 year old, that purchased 14 acres a few years back in Lambton Shores that is slowly transforming from a city boy and hoping to become a permie.

Over the next few years I hope to plant some trees, setup a hugelkultur garden, and hopefully a guest cabin/earthship(17x24ft) that will house a thermal mass rocket stove.

As for financing the land unfortunately in my situation the bank would not consider the land in part of the mortgage calculation and would only recognize my property as a 1 acre property while doing the appraisal. So the difference I had to come up with as a down payment. Not sure if anyone else had better luck financing land but I know they would not recognize my land at all.

Hi there,

Im Jake, 16, (17 next week), kid who lives in the city of Toronto. I have worked on organic & biodynamic farms which now it is my dream to be a farmer, only permaculture style.. I invested recently in a $600 course by Gaia College / SOUL, and learned all about the science behind ecosystems, plants, permaculture, etc.

I currently work at farmers markets, landscaping (myself) around the city, walking 1 dog (my "dayoff" hour -- simply walking around); though currently thinking of starting my own business. I love farmers markets, not the biggest fan of the city, and would like to be a homesteader, organic permaculture farmer and eventually have a family with a healthy, hard working , loving wife.

I am very interested in the natural health movement, love to cook, eat, play basketball, do yoga, and other fun stuff. Haven't met any other person my age interested in any of this stuff which is pretty sad. But hopefully things are slowly changing. Lets get back in touch with nature & practice compassion, sympathy and love.

Thats it for now. Hope everyone is awesome and enjoying their practices and studies of sustainable agriculture.

I'm regularly going to Guelph. And am building a permaculture farm starting with zone 0 (building my house). just a noob here - im 29- i grew up country and im interested in getting into permaculture and livinig off the land sustainably like our predecessors. i didnt know college courses were available on permaculture. i live in a small community between belleville/kingston/napanee area and i want to collaborate with more permies. i have designed and built my own compact rocket mass heater and i grow tomatoes in the summer- but im just getting started

Unless you have pie, which I don't think you do, the thumbs up button just toggles. Press it once to give a thumbs up, and press it again to take that thumbs up away again. It won't actually give a thumbs down. If you have pie, you can give two thumbs up, and there *is* a separate thumbs down feature.

Hello All,

Julie and I are in our low 30's we currently live by Petawawa (2 hours west of Ottawa) we have 2 dogs no kids. We have been gardening here for about 6 years now, started from scratch with tons of sand/clay no silt. We went to the back to eden style of gardening about 3 years ago and are getting some great results. We have raised meat chickens for the past 3 years as well, we would like to try egg layers at some point...

We have been canning and dehydrating for a few years now as well. We do some wildcrafting in the area for different herbs/berries. We always seem to miss the fiddle heads...(trying again this year) We are just getting started on fungus ID as we have mushrooms popping up everywhere in our garden and some of them must be edible. We just planted Seabuckthorn, Haskaps, Currants, and gooseberries last year hopefully they come back. We have a bunch of other perennials that we are establishing as well (edible and non edible) We started saving our own seed 3 years ago, still learning with this... I do have a sweet zucchini on the outside pumpkin on the inside that will attest to the fact that I have a lot to learn... or I'm good at (unintentionally) crossing genetics to create new plant species.

We have a bit of land up in NW On near Rainy River that we plan on retiring on. Right now we are working on establishing perennials and planting trees that we can use for propagation in the future. The property has a south facing hill (its a big gravel deposit so good drainage) that we are hoping to build an earthship style house, we don't want to use the tire method right now we are researching options (a few of my unresearched ideas are using shipping containers filled with earth in place of the tires or using earthbag construction...)

We are interested in any earthbag, cob, rocket mass heater, beekeeping, aquaponics, and tree/shrub grafting workshops in the area. If you are in the area we love trading plants/seeds just let us know.

Hello, from Toronto and developing a summer lot/place in Georgina County. I do a lot of solar cooking and have built other RE projects. Now looking to get my hands dirty with growing. The lot is mostly sand, cedars, and garbage left from the previous owner so this will be interesting. I've started clearing some of the smaller trees and standing dead wood, still lots to cut down. Was only cutting what I could burn so not to leave a fire hazzard but will switch gears and try Hugelkultur. Also am harvesting poles for various building projects. Started a raspberry bed this year and another leaf mulch bed for garlic and onions with various flowers planned to help keep mosquitos away. Planning to do various veg on the hugel mound and an area for pole beans and other vines/runners to attract pollinators and want to add in various other things, fruit trees etc. There is so much info on the site that I'm getting a little carried away!

Hi all.

Just wanted to mention that I, too, am in Ontario. I live in Toronto and have done such backyard-scale things as garden bed vermiculture, a built a hugelbeet, and basically treated my garden as a tiny but intensively managed kitchen garden.

My much better half and I want to relocate to the Brighton/Warkworth/Campbellford area soonest. We're looking to buy a house on some acreage, or just buy some acreage and drop a trailer until I can build a WOFATI.

I don't know that I would call myself a polymath, but I do tend to pick up things, and learning is just something I do when I read, which I do constantly. I am a print finisher and book binder by trade, working for the Peel District School Board at the moment, and if I could find a job, or a couple of jobs, out in the Trent Hills somewhere that could replace my current income, we'd move out there as soon as I could find a piece of land to rent for a trailer and some market gardens.

So hey, if there's anyone in the area that knows of jobs, land, rent-to-own opportunities by permaculture-friendly landowners, or if you just want to say hi, respond in this thread or drop me a Purple Moosage.

On another note, I would love to know if there's any interest in permaculture meetups, perhaps at a pub or bar somewhere, or at someone's place, for Ontario permies. We don't have to live together to act as a community and be of benefit to each other.

We are called Pangaea and are located in the Lanark Highlands of Lanark County. Closest town is Perth. Our family of 3 are living on a large acreage with a fair amount of diversity. Some of what we do are plantings, gardens, children's nature program, small scale forest work, fascines and other earthworks/land reclamation, healing ceremonies with native people from the region, experimental biochar, 'waste' cycling and other ecojewel catching & transformation. Pangaea is also a place of spontaneous meeting, learning, visits and refuge. Connecting with the living landscape, and that we are a vital and needed part of it, is very important to us and that everything is not about being "productive". Instead we need to take on a wider sense or definition of productivity--perhaps a la 8 forms of capital. Looking for outlets & venues--especially locally, bioregionally--for my writing and other creative works. Also trying to remember the history of this place and not rushing into things. We aim to tap into local wisdom and skills--including the "hicks" and "rednecks".

i know that area from driving through to Arnprior to work for an old friend who is no longer alive. i also remember a big sign along the road somewhere near there that read "EARTHSHIP" and i have considered stopping in more than once on my travels. i'd like to see how an actual earthship survives winter here in the cold canadian climate. my place is partially underground but doesnt seem 100% comparable to an actual earthship.

Spouse and I live in Toronto and currently grow things in our tiny apartment and on our tiny, windy balcony, lol!

We're hoping to move out of the city in the next two years. He can work remotely and I am a professional engineer in a pretty high demand and non-volatile sector, so I am hoping I can find work wherever we go.

We hope to build a garden to supplement our food needs and also as a rewarding hobby. The plan is to find something with a livable structure and explore some building techniques as well for out buildings.

Whoa! We're twins!

I also live in Toronto with my partner and grow things on our tiny balcony. I have been able to convince my neighbours who have started a garden in the backyard to plant some nice things that are too big for us to fit on the deck, and my sister has given us free reign to do some experimental gardening in her backyard, so I'm happy that we have a bit more to work with this year.

Our plan is to get the heck outta here in a couple years and start up a homestead with our close friends who have the same dream. We all currently work in the photo industry which has been pretty hard-hit by the pandemic so we're all figuring out how to retool and start the transition. I've been chomping at the bit to get some more hands-on learning experience with farming/gardening/homesteading but it's been difficult to find opportunities that don't require a car.

I work for the man but plant for the pollinators~

How quickly things change!
We moved from our Toronto apartment to a strange little temporary arrangement in an old farmhouse outside Cambridge, ON. That means I get to plant in the soil this year. You couldn't imagine my joy to finally set up some lasagna beds this fall and find worms in the earth. No more hauling potting mix in bubbie carts down Ossington!

I work for the man but plant for the pollinators~

Ahhhh! We did it!!!

I finally had enough of sobbing every day in my office so I started looking for a new job late last year and found one in the Ottawa region. We also bought our first car which I suppose is an unfortunate compromise to having to work outside the home in a rural area. DH myself and our two cats moved into a sub-let in late December and in February we put an offer on a house!

Real estate is completely goofy right now so there were two downsides:

We were not able to find anything above an acre in our price range that had wired internet access, and satellite/wireless/cell is not reliable for DH to work from.

We had to bid unconditional (!!!) which means we were waiting until this week to know for sure that we could get a mortgage. We had pre-approval for our budget, but there is a chance the lender decides we paid too much for the house which would have been...bad.

We got a house that is the perfect fit for the two of us, a 20 min drive to my work, zoned rural and in the greenbelt. It's on septic and well and uses propane. It's on 0.49 acres, and the backyard is on the south side, and it looks like we are a good candidate for solar. We won't be able to move in until late June, but we are hoping to use the rest of the summer to observe, plan and prepare the property to hit the ground running next year with a garden.

We were hoping that moving out here would lower our costs a little bit (I took a pay cut), but we have found this isn't really true. The real estate market has run wild and it was only after taking a potentially financially ruinous risk outside of our original budget (but still affordable) that we were able to buy our mini homestead. I am so excited about the possibilities (and responsibilities) that are open to us here. I can't wait to become a contributing member of this board rather than just living vicariously through the posts I read here.

That is so exciting for you. I agree real estate is insane around here right now, with no end in sight although logically it must end. A small homestead can still supply sustenance and income to offset the original investment. If you have not taken a pdc, and have the option, now would be a good time to do so. I can recommend one close to you at a reasonable price and you could use your new property as the assignment. I am close enough to you that I could share many of my plants (free) to help you get started.
