As we are trying to infect brains with rocket mass heater stuff, one of the biggest issues is to simply see a rocket mass heater in action.  See the sideways burn.  Feel the warmth during the fire and feel the warmth when the fire has been out for a day.

Actually seeing and using a rocket mass heater makes a huge difference.

Maybe we should host some sort of rocket event over a weekend.  Something for people that might be here for just a few hours - combined with something where people might stay overnight to experience the longer term stuff of a rocket mass heater.

At this point, it is just an idea.

Excellent Idea, it works great!
I have invited numerous folks over to view my RMHs. in action
It is always a pleasant visit with many exclamations of OMG I had no idea how impressive these are!
Almost every visit here has resulted in an RMH being built elsewhere!
Currently, there is a 7" batch being built in N.Idaho that was inspired by a permaculture talk Paul gave in Sandpoint.
I invited those folks over to see my Dragons in flight.  They asked all sorts of questions, went home, and started buying supplies.
We even arranged a trade of Dragontech parts for a sick Subaru they no longer needed!
Their RMH should be up and running in the next few weeks.
Seeing is believing!

I would be into this. I live in The Missoula area and have spent the last 6 months building the bones of my house and next year comes the earthen floor and the rmh. This is a winter for research.

I would probably be in the “hang out for a few hours” crowd.

Maybe we start at 10am and I could give a presentation in the classroom.  Then we have lunch.  And then we go around and look at all the rocket mass heaters at basecamp.  Or most.  Maybe some will be running and some will have been run a few hours earlier.  Maybe light one on the spot.  See the sideways burn.  See the exhaust.  Feel the heat for how little wood is burning. Feel the heat when there is no wood burning.

Maybe limit it to 24 people.

Yes, that's a great idea.  As a matter of fact, that's precisely how I met you guys.  I came there for a RMH course.  Remember me?

I’d be interested in that if on a weekend and a couple of weeks advance notice. Give my wife and I an excuse to come out again!

I feel like if there is enough interest, then we should pick a date at least four weeks out.  Maybe Dec 31 or Jan 7.

No Promises Paul;
If I'm not back working by then I could stop by for a visit on a Sat afternoon, as long as life does not point me in another direction on that day.
Perhaps it might fit my schedule better if I allow folks from the N. Idaho area to stop by on their way past and see my Batch box with bell and Batch box with piped mass in action.
If I start back working then there is no chance for any of this to happen.

I know a few newbies to this concept that would love to come.  Is there an estimate for the price of this shebang?

There is an organization in Missoula that i would like to support.  I am thinking that they might handle the part about selling tickets and stuff (and keep all the proceeds).  But I still need to talk to them about that - it sounds like one of the permies.com staff is trying to get in touch with them.

At the moment, the thing i wish to propose to them is $15 for their members and $50 for non-members (membership is $35).  So they might leverage it as an opportunity to build membership.

I am also contacting some VIPs to extend complimentary tix.  I am thinking that we might say anybody that has been here before can come for free (provided they rsvp) and anybody that has backed a past kickstarter for $100 or more can come for free.

Those are my rough thoughts so far.

John, that is a nice brick stove.

Can you tell the forum a little more about how it was made?

Do you have pictures from while it was being built?

I started with Matt Remine's plans. But I'm using a forced air option to draw the air and send it out the side of my house. And it's elevated off my floor which is vinyl over wood subfloor. ~ john

I think that the first step is to have it confirmed by somebody like beau or jeff.  Maybe the way to get that started is to send an email to    pa at permies.com.

Free to anybody that has:

   - been here before
   - backed a past kickstarter at $100 or more

Wheaton Labs must have the greatest density per square foot, of rocket mass heaters, in the world! This new video made by Reid, a Boot at Wheaton Labs, is a great little tour of one in the Love Shack. It's a tiny RMH that has a new innovation - the 'cob hat'. It's cute and cosy!
