Mother's Day is on Sunday, May 12th, this year. Do you shower your Mother with gifts on Mother's Day? Maybe just one or two? I lost my Mother a few years ago and sure wish I could! My son still has his Mom so I'll be pointing him to this thread...

We have lived in the city and in the country. Our lifestyle is currently a hybridized form of Homesteading. Working, being self-sufficient, DIYing, working with our hands, and learning new skills are all interests we pursue daily. For those of you whose maternal loved ones share some of these traits...

Permies.com is my favorite hangout. There are so many forums I may never see them all. The camaraderie that exists there with others isn't always readily available elsewhere. We share interests, curiosity, humor, fun and goofyness in these forums. One of my favorites is the Digital Market where fellow permies share and sell their wares. (Yes, we are working on making it more user-friendly!) Here is where I find myself for this fun and useful gift guide! I'll share some of my very favorite... Hint, hint, my family.

A cook book for off-grid moms!  A Year in an Off-Grid Kitchen by Kate Downham offers tips and tricks for cooking and living (or dreaming about living) without the support of the grid.

This gift idea won't make it to you for mother's day, but maybe it's okay. Permaculture Playing Cards are a great introduction to many different aspects of Permaculture, so if your mom isn't all sold out about your thoughts on polyculture or no-till... This beautiful deck of cards could be a step forward in understanding you better! One for Mom, one for you!

Two decks of Permaculture Playing Cards $50

My education includes foraging classes but, I don't always recognize the plants I see. Maybe your mom would like to learn to identify plants? Thomas Elpel's Botany Bundle is a fun way to learn how to identify plant families.

The Food Forest Card Game is a fun way to learn the basics of creating a food forest. It can also be used to explain your vision or to share permaculture knowledge!
This is a .pdf file so just print, show them some scissors and you're ready to go!

As a mom, I strive to make the world a better place. I think it is my responsibility as a parent and co-habitator of this beautiful world to work to make it a better place. Hiking, camping and backpacking guides advise to "pack it in and pack it out" meaning if you bring disposable items in, to take them with you when you leave. Also, to leave the area in better shape that how you found it. This, I interpret to mean "clean it up and make it better".

The Building a Better World in Your Backyard instead of being angry at bad guys book by Paul Wheaton and Shawn Klassen-Koop includes a number of great suggestions that I apply daily. The book is available in the Digital Market in many different shapes and sizes:

epub ebook
audiobook m4b
audiobook mp3/zip
physical book
a pile of books (The offer for a dozen books for $65 is still there!)

If you have other Mother's day gift ideas for Permies mothers or for mother's of Permies, please share them! The forums all about perennial discussion, so even if the gifts are something that need more time than the two days we have until Sunday, this thread will be here next spring too.

It is wonderful to have a day that celebrates us moms. A gift is just icing on the cake.

Hope all Mothers have an amazing Mother's Day.

Of course... NURSERY PLANTS!

My birthday was not long ago and my husband came home with some 'random flower' from the nursery. He didn't realize it was one of my favorite medicinal herbs! Echinacea!

Oh yes! And for me personally, even better is a gift card to a nursery! :)

Our mothering Sunday has been and gone. I just send my Mum a card and a bunch of whatever flowers I have in season. Usually it is daffodils, but Easter was early this year, so I sent pussy willow catkins and snowdrops. Unfortunately I live too far away to visit and make her breakfast in bed.

So you celebrate mothers some time in April? :) I wonder how many different Mother's days there are.. Here in Finland it's tomorrow, like in the USA.

I got some Mother's Day gifts a bit early, strawberry plants to plant in a hanging basket and an orchid! My first orchid ever, I hope I can keep it alive..! I'm not good with house plants, but I'm learning. I'm planning to create a plant chandellier, and the orchid fits well with the Hoya plants I was gifted last year!

Yes. In the UK it relates to Easter weekend - counting backwards so it varies each year by the moon. Historically people in service would have the day off to visit family, sometimes taking special cakes perhaps. A special day when you didn't have many days away from a live-in position.

I work with fellows from Mexico and they celebrate Mother's Day on May 10th.

I got some Horsetail and Honeysuckle!
