Definitely needed a deep cleaning. As you can see from the before picture below, there are spills, stains, grime in the grooves, just generally subpar. So I disassembled the entire fridge. Like reverse Jenga I took out every drawer, shelf, and bracket and moved them to a secure location (my bathtub, which I had just disinfected.) There I bathed the shelves in the sudsy warmth of
hot water and dish
soap. I used a knife to scrape things away and a Q-tip to clear out the grooves. I rinsed each part then hand dried with a towel after spritzing each with white vinegar. Squeaky clean. I also liberally used white vinegar on the fridge interior and wiped it down with a soft rag.
The waste? Well, this is one of those times that I get why we're doing these. I feel that I fell short and I have things to learn. All of the wilted vegetables, salsas and the like went into my
compost. Any jar I thought I could
reuse got rinsed out and saved. Any plastic or glass that I thought was recyclable went into the recycling. However, there were things I just could not resolve. For example, someone left a bottle of blue cheese dressing. I detest that stuff. Fat and chemicals in a bottle. No way am I putting that in my compost. No way am I dumping fat down my drain to
feed the grease blob. No way am I scattering that around to entice pests. So I pitched it. I just can't see another way. Pitching it bothers me, but so do all of the other options.
