So you're going to have something in the order of 30 little blocks of uneven lengths...
What creative project could that be? Garden edging, very small stacked wall, very weird book-case (remember the bricks and planks bookcases?) They've got to be good for something other than firewood???

Supports in the center of the center beam to round up the internal umbrella was my thought when looking at them.

There are 60 beams to cut too length, so 60 little blocks....
I cannot change the designed roofline AT ALL.  The only way the building inspector will let me add slope to the planned roofline is by cutting and sloping the insulation ( i already tried )

As for the little blocks....  adding support under the end beams is the only thing so far.

Either that, or i can burn " Daves Hobbit Home Build" into each side and sell em as tourist mementos... 😁😁 or fund raisers.

Those blocks will be useful for when you are working on a car and need to supported in the air for a while!
Can you add a shaped bit of timber on the horizontal beam in the centre to get a rounded shape?
Even run the 60 / shorts through a band saw?

Actually that was basically my idea as a guide for determining the insulation arc.   Would putting rounded stone or expanded stone in a mound be allowed then an umbrella over that?

Lots of good ideas, but i am falling back on the original priority - keep the building inspector happy.
Make a suggestion, if it is accepted and passes, all well and good, but don't insist or be pushy.  Keep your building inspector happy.

I can order sloped insulation for the roof.  Good enough.

I'd focus on the house for now, but maybe start a thread on the topic when you've got a new green roof over your head!

What are the two pieces of Jack Chain for??? (just curious...)

Sorry... Great job! Good progress!

Equally curious - how easy will it be to cut the circles for the windows? Have you already figured out how the cut edges and foam will be covered for a finished effect?

Wondering if someone would notice the chains.
3D printed a sign, so all the people asking " what is it"  - can look me up.

As for the holes - door and windows.  Probably not going to be easy - i am more worried about the tiny little air vent in the top right corner 😁😁
Work in progress...

At least you've got people asking! The more we spread the word about responsible building, the more hope I have that some buildings will survive some of Mother Nature's Bigger is Better storms!

Yes - not a "permie" house. But a house that will hopefully last for a hundred years + instead of houses local to me that are considered "past their lifespan" at age 60! If you build a completely biodegradable house by thinning a local forest that needs thinning, I don't mind if it doesn't last. But if you're going to ship materials all over the world, let's at least make it last!

Responsible and INTELLIGENT building.  Since starting to build this house, i have been too 5 of my friends houses, where they are forced to run dehumidifiers year round .... to keep their basements dry.
Build it properly the first time, it should be a warm dry basement, worse case, all that water will go into a sump pit and be pumped out.  We are wasting hydro on poorly designed homes as well as causing a variety of health issues from hidden mold and mildew.

SO MANY people are asking " why are you doing this .... or why build it like that... "
Because i want a warm dry house year round.

Unfortunately, probably not.

If you have a chance to read Rob Roys " Underground house book" - he states that the first 2 or 3 of these houses that he built - then sold - have had the earthen tops removed, and a regular house built on top of the " basememt".

Unless people wisen up, and energy costs get alot higher, i can see the same thing happening to this one.  Once i am gone, someone will remove the earth, and build a 2 story 3,000 square foot monster on top.

And be like everyone else.

All the beams are cut to the proper length, and i agree that it would be a shame too use the cuts as fire wood...
Tidying up, and getting em stacked - if you take the ones along the wall (+) the ones still up on the roof (+) the ones i used to brace the front and rear beams - 59 pieces accounted for.

Looking at the pile along the wall, i may just have to sand them down, and by glueing and pinning - make a 4 foot room divider for the back door...  they do make an impressive wall.

With all the insulated panels on the front of the house, i now have a much clearer picture of what i have to work with , in regards to making and mounting a 7 foot round door...

This will work nicely.  Lots of potential.

Going to have too keep the scrap s.i.p. panel pieces in mind.
Should be able to find a use for these as well... big one is 10'4" x 16 inches or so, 10 inches thick.

Slightly curious as too where cut off # 60 went.
60 beams - 60 cut offs.

Realized i had set 1 out at the fence along with a scrap piece of s.i.p.s panel for people to get a closer look at.  All 60 cut offs accounted for. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Nice picture - thanks! Yes - I *don't* do FB - it's not even allowed on my computer! Too much data mining for Hubby to tolerate with his background in trying to keep computers safe when the people around him didn't want to devote resources to do so. After he retired, the place he used to work had a major data breach.

How thick and wide are the planks again?

Are they going to show as part of the ceiling, or be covered from the inside?

Planks are as close too full dimension 2x6 as i could get.  Think they measure out at 5.5 ( not including tounge x 1.75.
Supposed to be full dim. 2x6, but lost a bit in the T&G process.

From the inside of the house, you will be able see the exposed plank and beam cieling  all insulation is on the outside of the home.

OK, so I'm assuming they're going horizontally at right angles to the beams?

So shall I also assume that to be safe, you'll put the tongue facing "up-slope" and the grove facing down? That way any moisture that's not supposed to seep in, will not collect in the groove?

Most likely do that scenario, although with multiple layers of waterproofing and drainage matting, this hopefully will not be a concern for a long .... time.

Either way, if water gets in there, it will find its way into the groove regardless if it is up or downslope.

I have had a number of people ask me about my Facebook page - they are not on Facebook.

As the only moderator, i am curious how the public see what i post, so here is what i do :

Google search " #undergroundandlovinit"
The top search result should be " Daves Hobbit Home build " with a link too Facebook.
Click on that link - which for me - takes me to my page - with an area that wants you to sign into Facebook.
Here is the good part.  For me, i can scroll through my page - as a visitor - just ignore the " sign into Facebook" area.

Give er a try.  Let me know if it works the same for you.

Oddly enough, the Permies link is second on the list. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

For me there was a box about signing in, but it had an "X" in the corner that allowed me to close the box. It then allowed me to expand the panel with all the pictures. Does the page have more written stuff and planning stuff? No time to randomly click on other bits right now.

You could try doing a search for "Daves Hobbit Home Build", but instead of seeing "all" results at the top of screen, click "images".

See what comes up.

Edit : google "undergroundandlovinit"  get more of my pictures that way.

The last picture seems to show some boards ending in between the rafters rather than on top of a rafter, which I've been told in the past is a bad idea. Is there a reason for this change? (all the others appear to follow the pattern I was taught)

The other day, i had set 7 runs of planks up on the roof loosely into place - for today.

Another 9 man hours in ( 2 people x 4.5 ) and all the planks are cut too size and fastened down...
