Let's get some topics going. Ask questions. This forum is now one of my highest priorities.

The search for land is going on right now. After years of looking at stuff that was not a good fit, Jon came to Missoula and is running point on the land search. Jon then saw many properties that were not a fit. After a month of full time searching, he found three properties all in one day that have good potential.

I think the time has come to talk about lots of details. Or as many details as we can before we know of the exact piece of land.

The coolest town in the world. It seems painfully obvious to me. I don't understand why anybody would need ask "why?"

Well, for example: What if there were good land available somewhere else that might be available for no cost? This might simplify the development process if the land cost was already taken care of.

I understand and appreciate your affection for the place you love best. There are probably lots of folks here who feel the same way about a great number of places. Personally, I'd love to live and build in Missoula. But I've seen and worked with gems of places in many areas that could be nearly as inspiring.

When you find your ideal site, I hope circumstances will still allow a pilgrim's travel from these Upper Great Lakes to see THE place. Where is Moses or Brigham Young when you need him? :}

I have been offered free land. I turned it down. I have several things I need to do, so I need to find the right piece of land.

Hello new to permies, living in Missoula and my first intro to pc in action was Place of Gathering...am now hyper motivated to get more active in Montana as it continues growing as an epicenter of positive change

Very interesting nonprofit called Fruit Tree Planting Foundation whos ongoing mission is planting billions of fruit trees around the world especially as food forests amongst large wilderness (Paul's farm) and it could be a great resource in getting started.

in podcast 201 you said you were down to maybe 2 pieces of land if I heard it right, and that was probably recorded more than a week ago, so I'm looking for an update..have you got something picked out yet and if so we want to hear about it !!! NOW !!

I have a piece of land selected, but we are struggling with the paperwork. We don't even have a closing date set.

Best of luck Paul!

For those that may not know, word on the street (i.e., Paul clued us all in at the INWPc Conference this weekend) .... He was able to close on his property!!!

Hooray! Congratulations Paul! A new adventure begins ....

Paul also mentioned something about his plans and a new (to me) concept called HUSP ... is this discussed anywhere within the Permies forums?? If I recall, HUSP stands for Healthful United States of Pocahontas. The concepts Paul mentioned about HUSP are especially intriguing and we'll watch for more with great interest.

This is where it gets real...

Congrats Paul! While ramping up the new place if there's a time a guy could offer free labor from a day's drive away, I for one would jump at that chance. Just throwing it out there. If this would be a possibility, what would you have people bone up on so as to be more helpful in this stage?

Also, since HUSP was mentioned above... please tell me I'm not the only one that thinks of this little diddy every time Paul talks about it:

Woops! Looks like I sucked the air out of this thread with that one . I'm gonna blame it on Mr. Rogers... though he did give his okay on imagining things like the Horticulture of the United States of Pocahontas.

^lol the vid

what corner of WY ar you in?

and to paul, have you found a good spot for siting a home (which i can only assume will be a wofati?)
and if underground, any plans for what you wish to grow above your head?

also i admire your commitment to home, dont stop thinkin you can change things, i know a man in ut, when he first moved to his small community it was full of typical neoconservatives to be found in rural america, but now, after living there and raising his family there, and not giving up on his home, it is one of the most pro-liberty communities around, or so his daughter tells me... home is what you make it and i wish you the best of luck in making your home the best you can:)

I love the video "You can grow ideas--in the garden of your mind." I've always loved Mr. Rogers--I had his album with the shiny foil on the front (to show your reflection) "You Are Special!"

But I want to hear more about the land deal. . .

Can not wait... but will try :)... for reports from the Krameterhof West ;) I want to see a wofati, with Paul the doorway ..... with a Meyer lemon in his hand (OK.. that will be awhile :)

Thanks Bill, though minor correction - offer accepted, not quite closed yet. More soon....

Sad to hear about the land deal gone sour. It seems the powers that be would have Paul's symphony remain in the realm of content spreading/pushing.

@ Devon Olsen... I hale from the Southwest Corner of WY but have settled in the NE corner of Utah. I've enjoyed and look forward to seeing more on your farm journey thread.

Land deal went sour? Is that true?

I'm going off of the podcasts with Ben Lawson where Paul describes how things fell apart at the last minute due to the seller continually changing the terms.

perhaps another offer of free land could be used to go toward setting up another, smaller community? just a thought. i mean not everyone might be able to/like it in missoula, even cool as it is

and since i notice no one has really posted in this thread in a bit.... *dun-dun-dun* i'm guessing no deal?
i know i would be super interested in moving in and building! heck i even have a half a farm of dang animals to bring i'd just need a good vehicle and trailer, how longs the drive i'm a'comin hahaha.
since i've only skimmed the podcasts i suppose i'm way out of date...

Yup, land deal went sour and did not close. Paul is now looking for land again. See the Paul Needs Land thread for the specifics of what he's looking for.

Paul loves to hear about people wanting to join the community on his property, though as he mentions in the Paul Wheaton community thread anyone joining the community should listen to all the podcasts first so they know what they are getting into!

There is a model Paul is considering with a smaller, offsite property/community, Kadence. Though it would have to be quite near the main property, with the idea that it could be a place to park cars and shuttle people to events and more.

The free (or sometimes reduced price or favorable terms) land Paul has been offered just hasn't been close enough to his primary goals that it would dilute the process right now, more than help.

Interested to know more about the "free" land. Is it available to anyone or just you ( Paul)?
