If you are reading this, I strongly encourage you to promote your permie stuff here on permies.com.

First off, are you aware of the "signature" feature?  If you click on "profile" and then "forum profile information" you can make a little blurb that appears at the bottom of every post you write!  Make sure to include a link to your web site there.

Take a look at Dave's post in this thread.  First, he says some really excellent stuff.  And you will then notice at the bottom of every post is

Education Director
Bullock's Permaculture Homestead
------------
Keep an eye on our courses at:
http://www.permacultureportal.com

He filled that out one time.  He currently has 245 posts.  So this message appears at the bottom of 245 of Dave's posts.    Some of his posts have been read thousands of times!  So, now, if somebody reads something that Dave wrote two years ago, they will see that at the bottom of the post and if they like the sort of thing Dave has to say and they want more, they know where to go!

And speaking of links, it would be nice if you made a link on your site back to us.  If the link says "permaculture forums" and links to https://permies.com/permaculture-forums that would be great!

Here is more about how to promote your blogs, books, videos, etc. at permies.com: https://permies.com/t/20020/tnk/Promoting-Stuff-Permies

I've made a little clickable 'smoking chimney bunkhouse" link that anyone can put into their blog or website which links back to this forum.

Just copy the code below and paste it into the appropriate space.

If you need help just ask.

Dunno.

I know of a few folks that have been through here in the past that manage web sites have made some links to us.

Things are so different these days.  As I go around to different forums and attempt to let folks know about my videos or articles, I encounter a lot of sites that do not allow stuff like that.

I want to express that I am not that way.  I am glad to have lots of links to other permaculture forums, permaculture wikies, mailing lists, videos, blogs, etc.  Don't be bashful.

And most of all, if you teach a PDC (or similar class), please put that in your signature and post a lot.  And also be sure to post about your PDC in the regional section.

Another tip,

Suppose you stop by once a week and post something really good.  Years pass and now you have a really advanced class, but the trick is that you need to get 40 people to sign up for it.

Change your signature to reflect the class!  All of the posts you have ever written will be updated with the new signature.  If you have written 500 posts over the years, then 500 threads will now mention your new class.

Actually, that code does not work entirely as desired. It will produce a link to the permies.com site, but it will not display the desired image. What is needed, at minimum, is the following:

If you make use of the capabilities of modern browsers to display things more typographically-- in this case without the blue border which a hyperlinked image unusually has-- then you might want something like the following.

In this latter case, you would need to indicate that someone should "click on the image" to activate the link, or tell them something similar.

d.

I just wanted to remind folks that I encourage people to make our visitors aware of other permaculture resources all over the web.  Feel free to make links.

Other sites strongly discourage this sort of thing - so I just want to be clear that I encourage it.

That is a big part of the reason I spend so much time here: it's obvious, on any scale one cares to examine, that the intent of this site is to foster discussion, rather than to own channels of information distribution.

Ongoing thanks for hosting this in the way that you do.

Thanks Joel.

Don't get me wrong, I hope that permies.com gets huge and awesome - I just think that the whole "don't let people make links to their stuff" angle is really weak.  I think it will be hilarious if permies.com gets to be lots bigger than those sites that have those sorts of restrictions.

Here is one of the coolest things I've learned about SEO in the last couple of months.

Suppose you have a web site about "colorado permaculture".  When people search for "colorado permaculture" your site comes up on page 3.  And, of course, you want your site to come up on page 1.

Go through the first five pages of results and pick out the three best pages you find.  Link from your "colorado permaculture" page to those three pages  (NOT a links page - it has to be your "colorado permaculture" page for this to work).  Now, there are probably a million pages that match the search for "colorado permaculture" - but you link to three pages that the search engines have placed in the top fifty.  Therefore, your site is referring to good stuff on the topic.  Even more than that, your site must be a decent site, because you are openly referring to other sites - probably even reviewing their content.  Now your site is an authority on authority sites.

I really like this part of SEO because this means that the search engines are rewarding the sites that are more about community and embracing "the competition".  I think that this factor is why the search engines appear to love permies.com so much.  I embrace linking to sites on the same topic.

PLUS!  As a bonus, those three links to what you thought of as the best sites out of 50, they each get a search engine nudge too!  You move up and they move up.  You are making the world a better place!

I just had another thought:

If you have a signature on permies.com that links to your site, and you have commented in a good thread, you can link to that thread on permies which links to you.  You could say "here is a good discussion I'm involved in on ______".  Your link improves the SEO on your page and the thread page.  The link from the thread page also improves your SEO and the SEO of the page further - which makes the link pass more google juice to your page.  Etc.

An excellent example:  I suggest that you edit your signature to show a link both to your web site and to your blog. Two links.  Since you now have 75 posts, that means that there will instantly be 75 links from permies.com to your site and 75 links to your blog.    Good SEO.

Further, if all of your posts are knowledgeable, then somebody reading your post will then say "I really like what this person has to say - and look - links to read more of what they have to say."

Many of the the threads at permies.com get read hundreds or thousands of times per year.

Now that there are 150 links from permies.com to your stuff, perhaps you would be so kind as to make a simple link from your stuff to permies?

Here is a copy and paste thing if it helps.

For those of you with blogs, I encourage you to let folks here know about your new blog entries and help drive traffic to your site.  All I ask is that you try to make your post not spammy.

I think a post that is little more than a link looks really spammy.  A non-spammy post would have at least a paragraph and maybe even a picture, and then a link to the blog entry.  If the post appears in an existing thread on the same topic, that is even better.

For those of you that post youtube videos, I invite you to embed the videos here.

So if we have a thread here about breeds of laying chickens, I think it would be great if that thread had a dozen embedded videos, links to 30 blogs and about fifty pictures and all sorts of discussion.  That strikes me as information rich thread, complete with gobs of links to your stuff.

Great thread to start here Paul. I have had my own blog linked here for awhile, and I always try to link to Permies and RichSoil.com's permaculture articles whenever I can.

2 quick ideas for easy and effective ways to link back to Permies, and to help your own site at the same time:

  • [li]Resources pages on your website or blog are excellent for attracting links from your own visitors (if they're good enough). Break the resources down into categories, such as Soil Resources, Water Resources, General Permaculture, etc. Not only will you be providing links for the websites that you list (such as Permies.com), but in the process you're creating great content that your own visitors will bookmark and link to. Here's a great example, although it's focused on books more than websites (but that's OK, too): How can I learn more about permaculture?[/li]
[li]If you're involved in a particularly active permies thread, share that thread on your facebook wall, twitter account, etc. It counts as a link to permies, and even better, it's a link that your friends will likely click on. Also, it counts as a link to a page that your signature shows up on, meaning that your link is slightly better as a result.[/li]

Here is an example of how I shared a blog post of my own in the past on Permies, in a non-spammy way, and as a result generated more discussion on Permies than it would have generated on my own site:

Douglas Bullock's Fruit Tree Recommendations for the Pacific Northwest

As a result, I believe that it also attracted a few links back to my own original Fruit Tree post site as a result of people seeing the post here on Permies.com

If you do post something from your blog like I did above, please don't disappear afterwards. Stick around for the discussion! Otherwise, it is spammy...

As much as I support the idea of folks making lots and lots of links to their stuff, something has popped up recently where I wanna point out: I like the idea that members of our community make links to their stuff. But if somebody comes in and all they do is make links to their stuff, that seems icky.

I think if you say: "I wrote this article on butchering hogs. My approach is a little different since I skip the boil and definitely keep every spec of fat for lard. LINK" ---- that seems fine. Maybe a little too short. An image and a paragraph from the article would be nice.

What is not okay is just a link. Or just the words "please read my article on butchering hogs. LINK" That seems less like you are part of our community and more like you are just using us. It seems like I'm not asking for much here.

With the new software, you need links in your signature to use the special ubb coding. Like this:

The "signature" feature is great on people's comments. I also really like the idea of like-minded, open people affiliated with each other in other ways. It seems totally free and unstoppable/focussed... I did cringe (don't like this word as it shows intolerance) about using Google to spread information & sales as ultimately it scores lots of own goals (many minus points along the way that disable any 'movement' or the 'movement')... but hey it's a good start and hopefully our own spaces and clever code can be something to evolve in the future, for our own spaces and terms.
As a stab at a solution I have free web space from a more principled service providers and peers. All may not be perfect as the main pipe or hub has to come from somewhere for webspace & internet related services, but let's not pick from lowest hanging fruit - there's pollution mixed on them fruits At some point we have to make the extra effort and unite on more level, strive and take care of our own patches, and our own data (which also means our own members) to go past the stage of being satisfied with what other businesses imagine for us... and ultimately think for ourselves / or think we can always do more without big business even if they promise many hits or members fed from synthetic pipes. There is a right and wrong way regardless of result / popularity.
Thanks for reading (appreciations). My post on the other page about Financial strategy is a more detailed reasoning of why - but PROBABLY too long - I wouldn't want you to see it as a disfavour as I dissect & dissemble a lot of what you already know and felt as a hunch along the way of life... but ultimately forgot in favour of more pleasant feelings in life. If you want to have a try to deal with the negative and make them positive (and think you know already the pitfalls of 'free' 'accounts' and on-line activity) then have a look > https://permies.com/t/120/16439/financial-strategy/building-residual-income-streams#492894
It's important we don't become the products OURSELVES.... especially from NON-permaculture people and quite the opposite types.

We like it if you take the trouble to become a member so we get to know you.

We like it if you then add a signature link to your site.

We like it if you have a single thread promoting your site - you can then add posts to update it like a blog.

Posting multiple threads with the same information on with links to your site comes across as spammy and may well get deleted - not sorry.
