For the past year I have seen more of this stuff than ever before. I am not the only one either. I have never been a crazy contrail person, not at all, but there are so many now that I cannot help but notice them. I have several other people in my life who say the same thing.

Wikipedia says contrails are caused when certain conditions of pressure, humidity, and temperature work together to cause contrails to appear. Well if that is true then the pressure, humidity and temperature are all changing to stay in sync with the airplanes. Because there have never been this many contrails consistently.

These particular clouds were right over Death Valley. The planes were doing big oval loops.. curious flight path to say the least?

Aren't there military bases out in that area?  Lots of planes flying around (but not every day) and generally going from point A to point A which necessitates some turns.  I'm also guessing that 5 planes flying from LAX to Texas make roughly parallel trails.  Then if uneven winds blow them 200 miles to the side so they end up over death valley, they might have all been blown out of straightness into matching curves.

Just a couple skeptical, top of mind thoughts to maybe explain it.

Yes, there are many military bases in the region, and commercial flight paths.. but these planes were flying in big repeated loops. The picture really doesn’t do it justice.

Variation on a concept - this picture is off the web, but I saw the phenomenon myself one night and thought it was totally cool!

Mother Nature can paint the most awesome pictures! She does a sun version, which I have also seen in real life.

Given the military's use of the Death Valley airspace for pilot training, the aircraft were likely practicing "orbits", whereby a fixed position is held by flying around it in circles. Tankers do it to provide re-fueling locations, AWACs do it to maintain a surveillance position, fighters do it to be on-call for missions.

One thing to do to help determine typical flight paths & military routes & training areas is study the aviation sectionals. Here's a link to download them for free. Navigation aids are clearly shown. Dig a bit deeper on the sidebar of that site & you can find terminal area routes. Analyzing these things can help determine what is normal traffic & what is not.

The very first pic above looks like it was probably someone practicing DME arcs.

One thing to understand about actual normal contrails is that they usually disperse fairly quickly. Not always. I've only seen one instance of unusual looking contrails. One. In many years of watching the sky closely. The entire sky was checkerboarded with nice perfectly parallel lines & the contrails lingered for a very long time. Probably just seeding to induce rain.

I say don't panic. Relax & enjoy the view.

This was one I took from our yard, on Nov 7, '22, because I thought it was cool...

We get a lot of visible contrails here. I guess it's our climate. Also we seem to be under many of the trans-Atlantic flight paths from Europe to North America. I think many people were flying on their holidays this Good Friday. I wish they wouldn't - not just because the contrails diffused the gorgeous sunshine we were getting today for a change! It did look pretty though, like some sort of explosion from the hills for much of the day.

(edited to add picture -sorry!)
