Help me name a movie from my childhood - there was an evil tribble in it

I can't remember what it was called.

I don't know why it was a children's film, it was pretty scarry.  Like a twisted fraggle rock.

There were two races of life size puppets.  Spoilers, they are really one people or something.

There are two children-sized human-ish heros that meet on the journey. one had an evil tribble for a friend.  Possibly the evil tribble was named fibbit.

The stars have to be right and this rock-key can go into place by the human-ish protagonist.   Then the land can be repaired. Miss the moment, and all is lost.

It was dark and scary.  And the possibly good puppets (but I suspected them of being either lazy or evil asking the innocent to fix their problems without explaining the danger well) were extremely slow at walking.

The movie would be on late nights and holiday weekends.  It had a late 1970s vibe.  I know I didn't dream (nightmare) it as I was talking with someone about it today.

What was the movie?

Seems to have been the same director as Fraggle Rock, according to this...

I might watch it later, with the dragons...

It was scary as heck! And beautifully made, considering how big those puppets were.
I watched it later with my daughter and, man the 80s were weird.
(you can make this into a spree and watch Labyrinth, also directed by Jim Henson (Muppet/Fraggle guy) but featuring a spectacular David Bowie.)

Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies. Dark Crystal is ok, but I like labyrinth better.  :D

and, in case you needed a what-the-heck moment this morning.....
Netflix made a Dark Crystal prequel in 2019. It ran for one season. I found the trailer....

I bet all you had to say to get the name of the movie was "scary movie we shouldn't've been allowed watched as kids in the early 80s".

The answer already given is what I had in mind. I don't
recall any tribble in it.

Here is a tool for your next conundrum.

It's how it got stored in my memory.   I must have watched both for the first time in the same month or something for them to get connected like that.

Tribble is referenced I think from the 'Trouble with Tribbles' episode of Star Trek in which cuddly little pet creatures became an overpopulation nightmare aboard the Enterprise.

I was a very weird kid, and watched the Dark Crystal with glee.  I was not afraid of it at all!  I was a huge Muppet/Jim Henson fan as well as a massive fantasy fan.   Netflix did more than a trailer of Dark Crystal.  They had a whole mini-series, which was excellently produced.

Labyrinth was extremely good, and not really scary either to me.

Want a bit scarier in the vein of costumed weirdness? :  Try Pan's Labyrinth.

At least in the States (maybe elsewhere?), Labyrinth briefly came back to theaters last year, and The Dark Crystal did also something like three years ago. Anybody go see them? I appreciate the tangential reminder to see what Fathom has coming back the rest of the year
