Paul, I would bet if you spoke to the Permaculture Voices people they may want to have some bricks..for attendees..maybe..just saying..for a $1k conference (close to that when the price goes up)..there often is a goody bag..and a deck of these cards would be very appropriate for such an item, in a boddle bag.

I have you down for two more bricks. I'll make sure we print extra and I'll contact you for paypal payment when we are done.

paul wheaton wrote:It looks like the kickstarter will be successful. So then the question shifts to: how can we leverage these to infect even more brains this holiday season. Somebody suggested that I go to the local garden shop and find out who their distributor is. Then contact that distributor.

What else?

Contacting Whole Foods and other large organic green grocer distributors.. that can get it out to the masses that are not aware of Permaculture but are conscious of eating healthy..now, and maybe have started growing their own food, used raised beds but have not yet..moved into Permaculture.

Now is the time to approach them to get them into the stores for Black Friday..

I am always a fan of selling on Amazon..but you better be prepared to be able to fulfill

In for an earlybird brick! Excellent easy to ship presents for friends left behind as we move 2000 miles from Wisconsin to Portland, Oregon.

I'm going to have to learn some card games. I recently purchased a "Name of the Wind" deck of cards.

(Paul, they did a cool thing where the author, Patrick Rothfuss and the artist consulted about the artwork via a Google Hangout and they let all of us watch, either live or later on YouTube. I think they took questions from the masses and observed commentary during the process. I think it was smart for you to already have all of the artwork done prior to going live on KickStarter, but if you do need to make a couple of new cards, consider making a video!)

Gorgeous graphics, kudos to the artist. I'm reluctant to suggest another change, but it would be great to have a short explanation of "what is permaculture?" on the back of the card somewhere. I distinct definition (sorta like an elevator speech) that people that are new to the concept can grasp onto (um..in this case, physically as well).

I started the kickstarter on saturday morning. It was funded by sunday afternoon.

There are currently 35 of the 200 earlybird bricks left.

We are currently working on plans for stretch goals. One of the stretch goals being considered is to make all queens be actual women in permaculture. The discussion is going on here.

Here is the link to the kickster. Now would be a good time to make suggestions on how the page can be improved or any other rewards that we should consider.

I'd love to see a reward between two decks and a brick, like 6 decks for $70.

I was interested in buying one or two decks of cards until I saw the $20 shipping. It would cost me a minimum of $40 which is a little much when you could put that towards a permaculture book.

All of the international shipping stuff that I've seen has become freaky expensive. And it seems to be on the rise.

I agree with you that it is expensive nowadays but shipping to Canada is far cheaper than oversea. What is the weight and dimension (W-H-L) and I am assuming it will be shipped from Montana?

Would love to get a deck or two for myself and maybe to give on away, but the $20 price is too much for me right now as I am living frugally and building a house + farm from scratch. I understand this is fund raising + get the permaculture word out, but is there any way these will be available for a better price someday?

I like the idea that people that support the kickstarter pay a much lower price than people that don't. Therefore, the price for a brick will be above $100.

But!

We are currently looking into price stuff such that if we reach a certain stretch goal, everybody with a brick will get a double brick. Therefore, the brick price after the kickstarter will need to be higher than $50.

Alexander and I have been working on lots of ideas and today we nailed down four big things. Three stretch goals and one new reward. I'm posting them here first and then I'll go put this up on the kickstarter.

$100,000 stretch goal: the three queens. All of the queen cards will be women. We have a process going on at permies.com right now where the women are being selected. For more information see https://permies.com/t/27330

$150,000 stretch goal: double bricks. Everybody that signed up for one brick will get two.

$200,000 stretch goal: warm climate cards. Most of the cards are the same no matter what climate you are in. But some of the cards have been optimized for cool climates. In the beginning, Alexander and Paul had the idea of doing two decks. Then there was the thought that it was going to be hard enough to do just one printing so we should focus now on cool climates and if it goes well, we could do a warm climate kickstarter later. Now we're thinking it would be much smarter do it NOW. To get to $200,000, people will have already reached the $150,000 stretch goal - so they will be getting two bricks. When the kickstarter is done, people that purchased a brick will be asked "do you want warm, cold, or one of each?"

New reward: (limit 2) your likeness will appear on the face of one joker and your name will be hidden on the card. You will also get to choose what tool your joker is holding.

Stretch goals are a great idea! I would insert a couple of stretch goals in front of the $100,000 stretch goal. Like, $50,000 and we give everybody a pdf of the polyculture card, or a version that could be used as a desktop or screensaver (on a smartphone! It's even sort of the right size!) $75,000 and we will make magnet versions of the card artwork available as an add-on.

Add-ons! You can do add-ons, and leverage the clients you already have.

Check this out: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1460165270/the-name-of-the-wind-playing-cards This Kickstarter ended in June, but they raised crazy gobs of money. Having a super cool celebrity author with hundreds of thousands of fans (and thousands of crazy devoted fans) is what made that one go nuclear, but ignore the totals and check out all the stretch goals and add-ons. Magnets seem obvious. T-shirts would be cool. They figured out how to have themed poker chips in a lovely boxed poker set, and then there's these things called "card covers." They had special dice made as well.

You don't have to do all these things, but you could do some, maybe!

Paul, these are beautiful. It makes me hungry for more. Last weekend I saw a board game called Farmopoly at a friend's house. I got all excited until I saw that it was the same "land here, pay rent etc" format as Monopoly. I hope that your next project could be a proper permaculture board game. It raises all sorts of interesting questions doesn't it? Who wins? The person with the most money? smallest carbon footprint? healthiest soil? Most fulfilled their permaculture/holistic management goals? Plenty of food for long winter evening conversation and debate... Cheers, Susan

Some of the card designs would be nice wall art. If you could print them to some standard picture frame sizes they'd be nice conversation starters hanging on the kitchen wall. Perhaps done up on some antique/vintage style poster board.

Also it would be really neat if you could make some decks on extra thick card stock so that you could make a permaculture house of cards that won't fall down if built correctly. Because we all know a home made of Permaculture Bricks far outdoes a standard Ag model in the long run.

One more. Perhaps a limited edition set of Puzzles? You know? Something to do when it's cold outside and the power is out and your sick of losing at poker.

I haven't come across how much the cards are, and do you do any discounting for school groups? I'm a teacher, and I sponsor our Green Club at school. I would love to get several sets of these cards for my students, but have already blown my budget for seeds and other things for the school garden. So, how much are they?

Hi Jackie-

And welcome to permies.com!

I'm no official poobah here, just a member like you, but here's some info I hope will help you:

Right now, the method for getting decks of cards is by helping to fund the Kickstarter, here:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paulwheaton/permaculture-playing-cards

At the link, you can see the rewards, for each level of funding.
Eg $20 gets a reward of one deck, etc.
The payment method at Kickstarter is very easy; even if you don't have a paypal account, you can use "Amazon payments", credit card, etc.

I just saw that somebody had suggested making this into a book. You know, I'd like to have this printed in a coffee table format. Perhaps an extra paragraph or so for each page with a bit more depth, space for notes, or original sketches of the card with notes about how it morphed into the final design.

In for a Brick. I missed the previous kickstarter by a day and almost missed this one. Thanks, Paul, for making Wood Burning Stoves 2.0 available beyond the kickstarter! It's part of my nefarious, devious, and dastardly plan to conquer NE Wyoming for permies.com. 'Course, I'm just getting started...

Thanks!

Same problem here in Europe. Perhaps if there's a lot of interest from one country/region combined shipping is an option? International shipping fees for a single deck of cards or a few bricks at once are almost the same. Here in Europe for about €5 you can ship a few decks all across Europe.

My sources tell me that these Permaculture playing cards are quite possibly the slickest thing since the development of the wheel.

Thank you so very much for all the innovation and hard work, Paul. Keep it coming and long-live the Empire!

Howdy,

Just heard you Paul on KZYX and found out about this Kickstarter project.. alas too late. I manage a nonprofit and would love to order a brick or two. I am sure you're buried with the success of the campaign... would love to know what happens next for those of us who missed it. I'm sure I have a few dozen permie friends that might want to know as well!!
