Matrim,
I will be building a demonstration Rocket Heater at the Mother Earth News Fair in West Bend Wisconsin on on September 16, 2023. Come play in the mud with us.

The MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR is coming back to Wisconsin, September 16-17, 2023, at the Washington County Fair Park & Conference Center in West Bend, Wisconsin. We hope you will join us for the fair and maybe a little Natural Builders/Permies get-together Friday night before the fair. James Juczak and Uncle Mud are running the Building and Energy Stage. Our currently scheduled seminars and hands-on workshops list looks a lot like a mini Wheaton Labs Permaculture Technology Jamboree.

Build a $25 Composting Toilet

Save 50% or More on Your Power Bill

Fairy Houses to Forts: Hands On Mud Building for Kids

The High Art and Subtle Science of Scrounging

Hands On: Build Your Own Wood-Fired Pizza Oven From Dirt

Water for the Homestead

Alternative Energy Systems for the Average Person: Solar, Wind and Microhydro.

Building Codes for the Owner-Builder

Hands On: Building with Cob

Hands On: How to Stop Being Afraid of Power Tools

*Please check the schedule online before you come because things may change.

There are several other stages with lectures and workshops plus vendors for everything Permaculture from Homestead Livelihoods to Herbal Remedies to electric tractors to Earth-Friendly-living books.

Here is a link to purchase tickets.  https://store.motherearthnews.com/products/wisconsin-fair-2023/?ref=oj7l703h Kids 17 and under are free. I think you can get $5 off when you check out with my discount code UNCLEMUD

Chris,
I'm painfully aware of the evaporator design challenges, but it's instructive to mention for those new to sugaring. Year one, about 1.8 quarts of syrup from four taps on a turkey fryer pot over a crude open fire. Year two, 18 quarts from 40 taps over a rough rocket stove using the same pot plus a cheap preheat pot you'd use to make spaghetti. Both years took about eight full days of boiling. I'll post more about it in a separate thread, though.

Sasha Rubin and John Orcutt make up the Earthen Shelter team. They teach cob building workshops at Quail Springs Permaculture in Mendocino California. They have been posting pictures of RMHs that they have built on the Earthen Shelter website.
The most recent one they built is a batchrocket they installed in their yurt.

Hi, I'm Nate and I've been experimenting with various types of wood stoves for the last decade and a half and recently discovered RMH's thanks to Paul Wheaton's excellent videos. I view RMH's as an appliance, and my objective is to build the best heating and cooking solution for my minimalist self reliant living lifestyle. In the quest for overall efficiency, I've realized that combining proper cooking appliances into RMH design will provide greater overall efficiency than having separate heating and cooking appliances such as a Jtube RMH and then other conventional cooking ovens. If I only have to make one or two fires per day and can both heat my home AND cook all my food at the same time, with the same fire, I believe that is the path to ultimate efficiency. ( I also have solar ovens I use). Having a RMH have minimal basic cooking ability is not sufficient for me, I want and need full proper oven and stove top cooking abilities, with cosmetics that look the part in a proper kitchen, so this is my focus and goal. I'm also going to be incorporating burning diy Homebrew Methane produced from composting into RMH design for a dual fuel function to increase efficiency even more. Methane can easily be made for free using kitchen scraps, manure ( yes even human manure), or any decomposing organic material. Certain safety precautions need to be taken with Methane as with any gas, but harnessing this free fuel source, will more than double RMH ultimate efficiency and sustainability compared to just burning wood alone. While I am not able to offer hire to do builds for others, I hope to contribute to the cause and community with my experiments and will be posting my progress here and on YouTube for anyone interested.  Thanks everyone for your contributions and builds. Exciting times!

Hi Nate;
You might enjoy looking at Matt Walker's RMH stoves.
In particular, his tiny cook stove might be just what you have in mind.
It is a cooktop and an oven and it can be plumbed into a bench or bell for long-term heat storage.
Here is his site https://walkerstoves.com/

Peter's work in the Netherlands is clearly leading to more RMH builders there. I just added Vuur & Leem from Gaanderen, NL to the list.

Hi all

I own the URL RocketMassHeaters.com. I've had it for a few years but didn't end up doing anything with it.  Happy to pass it on for $100. Please DM me.

I'm renovating a 103-yr-old house in the mountains in Sparta, North Carolina that we bought last year.  I want to install a couple rocket mass heaters in place of the existing fireplaces.  It's a 2-story house, 2000 sq ft, with two chimneys and no other functioning heat source.  Has anyone every done anything like that?  I survived on electric space heaters and $500 energy bills through the first winter.  I'd like to NOT do that again - lol.  I have 2-3 young workers who can help, and me (not so young), but none of us has ever built anything like this, so could use guidance.

Hi Rebecca;
Creating a thread is easy.
To start, you can copy/ paste the post you just wrote.
Go to the RMH forum and click on the button that says "new topic"
Once that opens you can paste your previous post there, and give it a Subject line at the top such as "RMH in my 100 year old house"

This way, there is a thread about your build and we can answer any questions you might have.

Thanks Peter. Nowadays (September 2024) Hacono only includes only Pablo Kulbaba. In fact, we have a team of builders, but they are not permanent partners of Hacono Estufas. Please edit the post if you can .

Peter van den Berg wrote:There are some builders and non-profit organisations around in Europe that I know of. Here they are, in no particular order.

Spain: Builder Pablo Bernaola, website http://estufasrocket.es/ (Spanish)

Poland: Builder Artur Jan Milicki, website http://www.pieceartura.pl/ (Polish)

Spain: Builder Eduardo Marquina, website https://estufasdeinercia.wordpress.com/ (Spanish)

France: Builder Yasin Gach, non-profit organisation Uzumé, website https://uzume.fr/ (French and Spanish)

Portugal: non-profit organisation BatchRocketPT, https://www.facebook.com/BatchRocketPT/ (English)

And last but not least South America, Argentina: Pablo Kulbaba and Ramiro Walti, Hacono organisation, website http://www.hacono.com (Spanish)

Hi. Nice thread.
Please let me introduce myself.
Rocket mass heater designer and builder here. My first stove been a Jrocket stove, following Ianto's book and a friend's advice (Alex Groe), in 2013.
Been building J-Rockets for a while, until met Peter van den Berg's BBRs. Translated www.batchrocket.eu into spanish in the way.
Then found and studied Gymse stoves via Carlos Ponticelli and Conrado Tognetti.

Nowadays my preferred models are:
-Estufa Danesa (danish stove), a remix between Gymse and BBR. It's my offfer for middle and high end clients.
-Estufa Chuncana mejorada. Based on Edgardo Gailhou's Estufa Chuncana. It's my entry level stove.
-Cocina institucional (institutional stove), based on Aprovecho Foundation original design, for those in the need for cooking for many at once.
You can find resources for these in www.hacono.com  and www.lestufer.com.ar

My Instagram account is https://www.instagram.com/hacono_estufas/

Anyone in Colorado or north New Mexico with experience building? Living in a sustainable community near Mancos Colorado, where this could be super impactful. Maybe hosting a workshop on the property eventually.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes; art is knowing which ones to keep. Keep this tiny ad:
A rocket mass heater is the most sustainable way to heat a conventional home
