I buried one of my best friends today. My dog would have been 12 this summer. He slept in my bed with me every night this winter. I found him dead when I got home last evening. I hope burying him in an area of the new food forest that I am developing is a suitable way to honor him. I loved him.

Hang in there, Trace. We are all part of the circle of life, and hopefully your dog will become food for a microcosm of wonderful organisms and be passed to all the trees you plant nearby and eventually you'll have a calm and beautiful place to remember him by. In the meantime, I know how much loosing a friend can hurt, so please try not to just hold it all in, but let the grief flow through you and out into the forest. Tears are healing.

That’s a tough one, Trace, no doubt. I have a 12 y/o GSD that has been a constant in my life for many years, and  he is beginning to fade. Dreading the day. Hang in there, you gave him a great life.

Trace, you have honored him with his burial place, and in doing so you have let him know that you two will continue to have, and find, and grow life together. Be thinking of what you will plant for him, to keep his spirit alive and yours, too.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Soooo sad.  My heart goes to you.

When my beloved dog died a few years ago, I buried her in my garden.  Her name was Fox, sometimes called Foxy or Foxinette depending on the mood.  To remember her and honour her, I planted Foxgloves (digitalis purpurea) upon her grave. It seemed a fitting reminder, besides, bees love the flowers.  I think it very suitable that you buried your dog in your forest garden.
