I was going to begin a thread about bamboo and thought bamboo might have it's own forum but couldn't find one.

A search shows 166 threads with 'bamboo' in the subject line so maybe enough to have it's own forum?

https://permies.com/forums?module=search&action=search&forum_id=-1&search_keywords=bamboo&match_type=exact&search_in=SUBJECT&forum=&groupByTopic=true&sort_by=time&sort_dir=DESC&search_date=ALL&member_number=&member_first_name=&member_last_name=&member_match_type=memberPosted

I can go through and copy links here, to this thread in a day or so if it's worthwhile😊

I guess its a question about whether it will improve the site.
Is 166 alot of topics?

Is 166 a lot of topics?

I think 50 threads is usually the minimum to start a new forum.

Seems like it would cause overlap and confusion, to me.

Bamboo growing has a forum

Bamboo woodworking has a forum

Bamboo composting has a forum

Reusing bamboo products has a forum

If we add a bamboo forum now each of those could end up in the bamboo forum instead but they arent really related to each other at all.

I think sticking to verbs, what you do with the material, is better than having forums for the material itself.

A thread (topic) can be in more than one forum so even though bamboo topics would be all in one forum each one can be in additional forums.
So a thread topic about bamboo used for building would be in the bamboo forum and also maybe natural building or one of the construction forums.
and if the thread was about cooking bamboo sprouts it would be in the bamboo forum and in the cooking forum.

It's definitely a multi use plant!

Can you explain what this means? I'm not finding them right off.

Judith, did you mean in the Growies category or something else?

I think 'trees' that is in the growie catagory would be a similar example.
as trees are definitely something to grow but from there have many uses as in woodworking, medicinals, food, fencing, etc.?

I like this idea. If we have a cherries or a beans forum, then it makes sense to have a bamboo forum.

This is pretty close to the current assessment on getting new forums.

https://permies.com/wiki/160660/forum

Questions:
1. do we have a forum that already does this job?
2. do we have a forum that could accommodate this subject with just a little bit of tweaking?
3. do we have enough content to fill the new forum and enough interest to keep it active?  On the flip side, would filling up the new forum empty the old?
4. does it match the goals of this site?

What do we need to build the forum?
a. a name - preferably one word that describes everything
b. a volunteer staff member to do the work (it takes about 20-400 hours)
c. a thread introducing the forum that we can link to at the top of the forum
d. some words to put at the top of the forum to describe it.
e. at least 50, but preferably 100 threads that would populate the new forum

Fulfilling all of the above doesn't guarantee the new forum will happen.  But it's a good first step.

Looks like a lot of those questions are addressed already.

But I also share the concerns, do we have enough Growies threads for a new growies bamboo forum?

If we can solve that problem, it will be easier to capture the interest of a volunteer.

I vote make a start - anyone can chip in and help - checking for duplicates. When it looks like we have enough threads we'll need a staff volunteer to help out. I think it's a great idea

I'll give it a go then so if it ever looks likely to happen the older bamboo links will be here.

I'll be slow....and if our winter/spring drought and early summer like heat breaks I'll be in the gardens 😊

Daniel, you are correct though I feel the new forum would be under Growies.

So threads about bamboo woodworking or building would be eliminated.

Threads about reuisng bamboo products would fall into the recylce forum?

Bamboo is wonderful for stacking functions.

1. A friend pulled a stupid and didn't protect her banties well enough from flying predators. Bamboo culms from my patch placed ~6" apart, now hold up netting and keep her birds safe.

2. The rope over my wood pile wasn't keeping the tarp up well enough. I joined two lengths of my biggest bamboo culms (about 2 1/2" diameter ) and made a light weight ridge pole that holds the tarp much more securely, particularly when it's windy.

Bamboo might not be as long-lived as some options, but its light weight but strong nature makes it incredibly useful on the homestead. When it's done, it can be put in a heap to decompose, or so long as the nodal diaphragms are breached, it can be burned in a woodstove or an RMH.

Personally, I think a bamboo forum is a great idea because it will make it easier to search and when people see what others are doing, it may inspire them.

Skimming through, I didn’t find whether this forum was covering a plant often misnamed ā€œJapanese bambooā€.  One scientific name in the USA is Polygonum Cuspididium. It’s considered one of the most invasive species in many countries but also has many uses. I have been using one compound for over ten years to prevent/reduce sciatica. The plant is a powerhouse of medicinal properties.

It has antibiotic, anti inflammatory and antiviral properties. It has been proven effective against at least four types of cancer and was found to reduce chronic Lyme disease better than doxycycline or tetracycline.

On the negative side, it retards germination and growth of other plants. It has been known to damage buildings and cause damage to streams.

Just a thought.

I agree. Here's the link: http://stoves2.com
