I've been eagerly awaiting the go live for this.

I also gave some feedback on the page, and maybe some fluff.

Dan and I started with all of this in november.  We thought we would start the kickstarter in january!  There have been about 40 delays and bits of comedy to gum up the works.  One of the delays was adding in a whole new rocket oven build with tyler morrison!  So some really happy bits!

For the last two months, my guts have been wrenching with all the dread that is part of the idea "what if we do this huge mountain of work and we don't get funded?"

It has now been about 17 hours and we are 92% funded!  I prepared to work hard for 30 days in telling people so we can get funded.   I am woefully underprepared for things going the other way ....    so, i guess we need a stretch goal!

Any suggestions for a stretch goal?

I'm in! ... and so looking forward to learning about Rocket Ovens. I dream about building an aesthetically pleasing one in our small suburban back yard that is slowly becoming "permaculturized".
Thanks Paul for all you do and by doing inspire.

My previous kickstarter (PDC and ATC video) was funded in 22 hours.  And that was my fastest ever.  This time we were funded in 18 hours.   A new record!

Stretch goals -

PDF of plans with numbers and stuff pertinent to making a build that doesn't require going back to the video repeatedly

PDF of plans for the awesome, portable, super-insulated J-tube.

Rocket stove oven recipes with rocket and carbon footprint graphics (that sounds like another Kickstarter, almost)

So, stretch goals... In addition to Bill "quick-draw"/ "I'm #1!" Erickson's fine ideas (I am also in favor of the plans, more plans, and food plans).

Maybe a future (time/place TBD) Rocket Oven workshop(s)... with some "Permies celebs" in attendance. Possibly East Coast, to spread the love...
(Boston, for example, has some points of interest/events happening in mid-April to make a tour of it all, wink wink, nudge nudge...)

This could happen.

Yes!!! Funded.

Thanks Paul, 3 weeks is awesome!

Ok I second Bill's thing and suburban smokeless solution--i don't know enough about it to know if it's realistic but to keep the smoke to a cookout level.  Ideally it should be less--the particulate emission is especially an issue ecologically in urban areas.  New scientist just ran another article saying people have to stop burning wood--though not examining the embodied energy of natural gas.  But if there's a way to reburn that smoke it helps.  Thanks.

This runs on Rocket Combustion Technology. Once the fire takes off there isn't any noteworthy smoke for the duration of the burn. All that smoke combusts to increase the heat in the oven.

I would definitely like to see PDF plans, especially with a few variations [smaller models, one with the sunken burn tunnel like Erica mentions on one of the videos in the other Rocket Oven thread, possibly one that is heavily loaded with mass for the purpose of being a hyper efficient form of the traditional pizza oven for a community, or a family that likes to do massive cooking once a month and freeze meals in advance, or for Pizza first, then bread/pie/etc followed at the end with a slow roast or stock pot.

Congratulations on the record rapid funding Paul.

I spent two and a half hours on the phone with Dan yesterday.  So much to talk about and we tried really, really hard to focus on stretch goals.

At the end, here is what we committed to:

$15,000 stretch goal:  complete review of the 2014 build

In the DVD there is about a minute and a half of review of the 2014 build.  But there is a lot more that we cut out for time.  But we can dig all of it out, spiff it up a bit and make it available to all kickstarter supporters as HD streaming.  This would be something like another "microdoc".

$20,000 stretch goal:  complete build of a cooking grate

In 2016 a grate was built to sit on top of one of the portable j-tube "rocket engines".   We have quite a bit of footage of that.  So we can cobble it all together into another microdoc.  So viewers would be able to pull the "engine" out of the rocket oven and then use it for a frying pan or a pot.  If we meet this stretch goal, this video would be made available to ALL kickstarter supporters as HD streaming.

$25,000 stretch goal:  how to weld

During the Appropriate Technology Course, everybody is taught welding.  There is classroom time and then hands on experience.  So this covers the basic introduction.  About 45 to 50 minutes of HD Streaming for all kickstarter supporters that support at the $15 level or higher.

Paul, I like the variants! and... I'm with you up to the welding part...

With the proliferation of maker spaces, and the older-school vocational school community-ed offerings, I feel like it's maybe "You're warm, getting warmer, now you're hot, nope...getting colder..."

Sure, you have the video of it, which is cool, but it's a drug on the market. By taking a course locally you also get access to the equipment, sometimes even the materials, and direct feedback from the instructor.

And...besides, wasn't there a focus on the AT, keeping it low tech, NO welding?
Does this dilute the reward for those who pledged at the ATC level?(an issue you have talked about) or is it just awesom-er for those $15 guys? (that's cool too)

I know how to weld, and sure as heck, I'm welding mine up. I'm guessing I might get asked from Boston area peeps...(Maybe at a Rocket Oven workshop...? in Boston...?) ;-)
And lots of folks know a guy, with a welder in their garage...

So, maybe a better, "something we can only get from the minds at Wheaton Labs" sort of stretch goal?

So, this pyronaut wants to make an add-on/variant that includes a charcoal/bio-char retort that is fired by/feeds back into the rocket oven... Maybe that design could be a stretch goal, we could build it in Boston, at that workshop...shoot some video to share...just sayin'.

Kenneth,

I've never been to boston ... the only eastern state i have ever been to is florida.  I kinda think it would be good to run a whole different kickstarter that would be about me going to the east coast.  Although there are a lot of cool people there, that would be quite the trip, and quite the expense ... and a large chunk of time away from the lab and the empire.  So, it is doable, but that sounds like a whole lotta coin.

As for the welder ....  let me see if I can address this in the next post ...

Hi Paul (and everyone else),

First off, things have been super busy on my end, so my apologies for not following up on our previous conversation.  I'm a "Delay is preferable to error." sort of guy, so sometimes things take me longer than I expect . . .

I would LOVE to get you out to Philly and get you in front of the group of people that I'm working with.  I think it would be a fantastically effective way for you to expand the empire.  And for the folks like me that are supporters, but can't easily make it out to Missoula to see you do your thing, I think there would be a bunch of regional people who would come to see you talk.  There's not enough permaculture out here on the east coast and we desperately need it.

So . . . presuming that travel and lodging is covered, how much coin would it take for you to hypothetically travel on a Friday, do some sort of presentation thingy on Saturday and then travel home Saturday night or Sunday (or some variation of this)?

Cheers,
CJ

CJ, how about starting a new thread in the tinkering forum.  Maybe have some "poor man's poll" stuff in it.  The key is that if I am going, I don't wanna go if jocelyn isn't going.   And I would like to stay someplace nice (not on somebody's couch or the floor of the pumphouse).  I would rather stay with cool peeps in their cool house and eat from their cool garden.  Then the next thing is that I am weary of getting to an airplane seat only to find that i cannot fit.

Here is something from many years ago https://permies.com/t/17428/tour

Hi Paul and all,

I've read through the thread you linked.  I was in a band for a long time.  I personally organized and funded the logistics part of our first tour (transportation and accommodations) so I understand how these things work (the tour was profitable btw).  I've included a link to us playing a sold-out show in Chicago (I'm the conga player).

I'm happy to make a thread in the tinkering forum, but before I do, I'd like to have a better understanding of what you want to happen.  I'm basically asking you to write a RIDER and tell me how much it's worth to you for you and Jocelyn to be away from the lab per 24 hour period.

Let me give you an example:

All travel, lodging, meals and incidentals will be covered by the organizer.  Travel will include Paul and one assistant.  Wifi must be available at all times (including flights if available).  Flights must be above coach class.  All meals must be vegan and organic.  Accommodations shall at minimum include individual guest rooms for Paul and his assistant or individual hotel rooms (three star or above) within 20 miles of the event venue.  The venue shall be supplied with (whatever amenities you'd like to have backstage).  Etc. . . .

$___ per day for you and Jocelyn to be away from the lab  X  total days away = your charge for the engagement / tour.

I think it's important to get in front of people and it's worth the carbon footprint to introduce people to and teach people about permaculture.  If you think you'd prefer to have several dates to make a trip away more efficient I think that would be even better . . . you already know Boston is an option!

Cheers,
CJ

Wow, that's a lot of people on that stage.  And you pulled it off cash positive?

And so i would have to do this without a band?

If you can make it so that I have one speaking gig a night for a crowd of 100 or more PLUS at the end Jocelyn feels like it was a vacation (and not a job)  PLUS (and this one is just punishing you for past comedy) $5000 in advance and a minimum of five days, then just $1000 per day.

I'd be cool with other stuff during the day, but no more than six hours of "show time" per day.

Could be fun!

Yep, but to be fair, no one made a killing . . .

paul wheaton wrote:And so i would have to do this without a band?

That's up to you sir, but I would advise against bringing a band . . . HA!

paul wheaton wrote:If you can make it so that I have one speaking gig a night for a crowd of 100 or more PLUS at the end Jocelyn feels like it was a vacation (and not a job)  PLUS (and this one is just punishing you for past comedy) $5000 in advance and a minimum of five days, then just $1000 per day.

So just to be clear, that's $12k total (presuming 5 engagements and two travel days), plus logistics covered and I make amends for the sins of others . . .

paul wheaton wrote:I'd be cool with other stuff during the day, but no more than six hours of "show time" per day.

Understood.

The $5000 would be an advance - because i've had one too many of my invoice not getting paid.

So rather than $12,000, it would be $7000 total.

I would like to suggest you start a kickstarter.

Thanks Kurt, I get that idea but for the 11 minutes heating up to pizza temperature is it smoking or just the first 30 seconds or so?  5" is what it took for the Yonkers fire department to come put out one of my projects, a few years ago, and that was more rural than where I am now.  If you can direct me to info on a fix for this I'd be most appreciative.   Thanks.

I'm excited!

As soon as the fire takes off (when it starts cooking rather than 'being started') the smoke is fuel.

Depending on skill and conditions your smoke might vary from five seconds to two minutes and will typically be small 'lighting a fire' type smoke rather than 'burning wood' type smoke so to speak.

I want to subscribe at "RMH." But what is HD streaming? Sorry if this is answered elsewhere. SD would be fine if it were downloadable. I have Wi-Fi outings.

I have no internet and my phone can't even stream banner ads (liberating!). It takes five seconds to open an email. My place is a Swiss cheese of dead zones. You get the idea. I can't be alone in this.

Can I download HD streaming? Can I get a download of anything else instead?

So your question mentions RMH and "anything else" ...   I am choosing to think that you are intending to talk about the rocket ovens kickstarter since this is the rocket ovens kickstarter thread.

"HD Streaming" is kinda like watching on youtube or netflix.  And the resolution is really high (720p or 1080p).

We are also offering dvds.  And although some people are pointing out that dvd is dead, there are still a lot of people (especially rural) that want dvd.

We also offer "tiny download" and "HD download".  Tiny download is 360p and the file will be something like 1 gigabyte.  HD download will be something like 8 gigabytes.

Does this help?

not positive of the DVD content but is there a version that still has the griddle on the side. I would love to implement this for more than baking. I know you had mentioned as one of the stretch goals a way to take the core and use it with a grate but i though the oven and the griddle was pretty dang slick. Wasn't' sure if this was dropped for simplifying the design or performance reasons.

Thanks for your reply, Paul. I should have been clearer but it was near bedtime.

I meant that all that great stuff that is available in HD streaming at the 60 and $80 pledge levels does not appear to be available as ANY kind of download at any pledge level.

When I got your PDC and ATC there were tiny downloads, that worked for me. The quality was acceptable, almost all important detail appeared in comprehensible resolution.

I know one can rip streams, I do it plenty, but I haven't tried with yours. I'd hate to pledge and then only be able to watch with Wi-Fi. They'd name a table after me at the local cafe! And all my discretionary income would go to pastries. Which, there are worse things.

I can offer hd streaming at a low price.  The dvd stuff is the most expensive.   Some people want hd download and some want sd download.  At the same time, some people have pointed out that there are way too many options right now - and I think they are right.

For the pdc and atc stuff, we have an upgrade path.   I suppose we could explore offering an upgrade path to folks for the other products - so they could upgrade to download after they get their kickstarter stuff.

All the other guys liked the pretty girls, but I always like you, tiny ad
