This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in tool care.

Drill bits work much better when they're sharp.  Let's put a razor sharp end on those dull drill bits that you have laying around!

To get certified for this BB, post photos or a two minute video of:

 - close up of dull drill bit
 - mid-process with all sharpening equipment used
 - close up of the sharpened edge

I sharpened a rusty Russell Jennings size 12 auger bit I bought from a salvage shop.

It went in a 24 hour vinegar bath.

I cleaned it up with a rag wrapped around a doweling,  a tooth brush and 320 sandpaper also wrapped around doweling.

Here is my dull drill bit to my 3/4” Southwire 4’ extended bit for running electrical wire for old work applications. Notice the large burs from hitting nails in the walls. I used an augur bit sharpening file. Cleaned up, burs gone, and now sharp!

I borrowed this auger for making a compound mallet. To say thanks, I sharpened the drill bit. Now I will return a tool better than I was given it

I used a regular old file I had around that was thin enough to not damage other working surfaces while I sured up the blade of this bit

Here at WL, I sharpened an auger bit. It looked like someone before me attempted to sharpen it and ate into the spur. It also looked like it had been dropped because the cutting lip was rolled over. I did my best to restore the spur.

After taking the action shot, I found that it was way easier to leverage the vice (but my photographer was gone by that point).

The sharp bit was a major improvement from when I found it!!
