Today I put in a 240v outlet and breaker.  What, you don't believe me? Here's proof:

I'm a 220V outlet installing machine! Waiting for the rest of y'all to catch up.  Here's another one:

Can't let Kyle be the only one doing 220 outlets.  I thought I'd give him some company here, oh, and I wanted to be able to run my new welder off 220 instead of 110.  So this required me to install an outlet and breaker to do this.

It was a fairly straightforward job, though I did need to remove some wall paneling to add the box and wiring.  It's out in my pole barn so it's not like things need to be beautiful.  The wall panel is OSB after all.  I was able to mount the outlet box right near the breaker box so that made it easy as far as wire runs go.

My breaker box had two spare breakers in it already that were right next to each other.  Perfect, I just pulled them out and could install the 220 breaker in those slots.  I also first tried using some 6 gauge solid copper ground wire I already had.  It ended up being just way too stiff so I abandoned that and used more of the wire I was using for the hot leads after running to the hardware store to get a roll of green electrical tape so I could properly mark it as a ground wire.

At last, I again have room for my shop tablesaw. Alas, the shop didn't have 220V run to it. So, I am documenting the outlet installation task here, and will separately document the wire pulling BB.

Short summary: Tablesaw and blower are each rated 2hp, 12A, for a running-together current of 24A. This is 80% of a 30A circuit, so that's the breaker size I selected. The wire size appropriate to this circuit is 10AWG. The tools are both older, and are 3-wire 220V (L1, L2, GND), however, I chose to run 4 wires in case I ever want to swap things out for a newer 4-wire 220V layout (L1, L2, Neutral, GND). As the former owner did not choose to separately derive a ground for this building, it's a moot point anyway without adding ground rods and reviewing the connection to main panel (they probably pulled out L1/L2/GND), but adding wires to a run is a pain, so I laid in 4 conductors. The conductors chosen are solar-panel wire, rated for exposed outdoor use.

A further goal of this project was to not spend money and use up old inventory that I still have in my electrical totes. Thus, I think it looks kinda like garbage, compared to a project where a client is paying to have things look nice. The upshot, however, is that I did indeed spend zero new dollars to make this happen. Moreover, the only particularly ugly bit is the box extension, because the box was a bit crowded; this would go to a galvanized steel square box. I ganged it on the aluminum box that I had. And then put a plastic in-use cover on it, because it's in the shop, and is a dusty environment.

However, the saw and dust collector are happy now, and I have been able to do better joinery (I like tongue-and-grooves with a dado blade). It's been about 5 years since I've had this saw set up, and I am happy to have it back in business. This short video demonstrates that yes, both tools start and run satisfactorily on the circuit.

I don't know if this will count, as I hardwired a new 240 volt circuit with breaker, for a minisplit, but there's no outlet involved - it's wired to the disconnect directly.  A few years later, I had to move the wiring to a new sub-panel, and I have more pics of that than the original installation (I installed the minisplit before).

I don't have any pics of the disconnect, but if needed, I can get them, it's still there... What I can't do, is show a picture of the spot outside where the compressor unit is installed - before I installed it.

If I can find pics that show the wire/conduit runs before, these might also be able to count toward the BB of running wire 20', but I don't know if I took any before shots of that...
