I used to make as many pies as I was years old on my birthday. It got to be a lot of pies. This year I want to plant 27 trees instead. We planted 20 Hazelnut trees from the folks at the new forest farm up on the lab on Saturday. I just need a few more trees to round it out.

As a gardener, I’m really fascinated to watch the polyculture of annual plants develop.

These pictures are from the pond at Allerton Abbey. In mid April, Dustin and I broadcast seed onto the soil that the excavator disturbed.

I’m really impressed by the amount of food growing on these less than one year old hugelkulturs at Allerton Abbey. Built and seeded by Kay and Ashley  last summer, these mounds have received no additional care this year besides poking in a few seeds and strawberry plants. Gardening at Wheaton Labs is very interesting.

Wow, that hugle _does_ produce interesting stuff. That one plant on the lower right... Does it have glasses?  <G>

No need to actually check into this but I'm curious how my hugel is doing at basecamp.  It's about 200 feet SSW of the garage.

Your hugel has the only asparagus that grew at base camp!  I planted 17 aparagus at base camp just to give you an idea. I'm not sure why, but those hugels that Ashley and Kelly put together grew out everything I planted there: strawberries and asparagus specifically.

Yours is doing well but theirs just kicks butt! I suspect, don't know, they used better soil instead of sub soil and sand. Maybe after some time and mulch, yours will be comparable.

this is supposed to be a surprise, but it smells like a tiny ad:
