Speaking purely hypothetically in a legal-liability-free educational way,

I have a couple of loved ones with difficulties digesting lactose, and I'm wondering if there are good measures for the distress AFTER said loved ones give in and eat some (conventionally produced, pasteurized) dairy and end up with a bad stomach-ache.

Anecdotal, inexplicable measures welcome, but feel free to provide lots of nerdy details and scientific research if your own enthusiasm or generosity moves you to give me such unpaid and undeserved extra-bonus knowledge.

So someone drank milk and then had an "allergic reaction". What are the symptoms that they are trying to solve?
Diarrhea leading to Dehydration
Lots of stinky farts via microbes population boom
Bloating, inflammation, atypical allergic symptoms
Vomiting/nausea and acid reflux

On this occasion, my friend has a bad stomachache, but did not elaborate on any symptoms beyond that. She said it's not a terrible reaction this time, so it's more a general question about what to suggest if she or another family member has a lactose reaction, with any number of the above symptoms, when I'm handy in the future. I was thinking mainly about inflammation and cramping, but seeing your long list here gives me pause; I wonder if it would make more sense to think in terms of treating each symptom rather than considering it a simple, but specific, overreaction to be calmed or 'neutralized'?

Since you put this in medicinal herbs I assume you are looking for herbs that will help.

I use ginger.

These are some others to try: Tumeric, Fennel, Caraway, Cinnamon,      Garlic, Rosemary, and Peppermint.

I have some digestive problems though not lactose intolerance.

What I have found that works best for me is to drink pickle juice.  I am not sure what is in the pickle juice that makes it help ... it just does,

I have not tried the fermented kind though I bet it would work just as well.

I hope you found some of this helpful.

I have lactose intolerance. I have never found anything that really helps after the fact. My tolerance level is such that if I don't eat cheese more than once a week or so I'm in the clear. So for me it's always just been a matter of moderation. Of course practically everything and every recipe in the states has cheese... So cooking my own food was key.

My wife is lactose intolerant and uses Lactaid tablets (or generic.) Pretty simple and natural, it's just the lactase enzyme that intolerant people do not naturally produce themselves. You have to take it WITH the offending food, rather than after.
She says it helps the majority of digestive symptoms so she can enjoy the occasional ice cream, but she still feels some other effects like minor joint pain which some lactose intolerant people experience due to inflammation.
We also buy only lactose free milk, which coincidentally keeps a LOT longer in the fridge than normal milk.
