The kickstarter is now launched!  All further discussion can happen at the kickstarter thread:

to go directly to the kickstarter,

The 2022 PTJ Event at Wheaton Labs was a huge success! Now we're considering the potential for a feature length Permaculture Technology Jamboree film. Many instructors and dozens of attendees spent two weeks practicing and learning hands on permaculture and appropriate technologies ranging from natural building and rocket heater technology to hugelkultur gardening and food preservation.

I myself was invited as an instructor. But when the materials for my project weren't going to arrive in time, I pivoted my focus to documenting and recording the event and its many fun and educational projects. I was also able to sit down with each of the instructors to talk about their individual projects, Wheaton Labs, Society, Permaculture and more!

Topics include:

- Beau Davidson and mycelium insulation, A mycelium insulated door and the Proeneke wooden hinge

- Samantha Lewis and animal husbandry, sheep sheering, wool processing and using animals in natural pond creation

- Opalyn Rose and a spinning wheel made from bicycle parts, Hugelkultur garden mound building, and the robust apothecary (tinctures, oils and salves)

- Jim Juczak and wood working, solar power and intentional community

- Alan Booker and the Spring Terrace, powerless water collection, and perspective on permaculture

- Austin Durant and fermenting, raw egg preservation, sourdough, miso, kimchi, and much more

- Chris Mclellan (Uncle Mud) and natural building, healthy spaces and rocket heater technology

- Lisa Orr, Chris Alvesheer and local clay, permaculture in ceramics and the rocket kiln

Plus several other potential projects and topics such as a wooden shaving horse, log bee hives, gardening, pottery, fire cider, rocket forging, chocolate making, cob, community meals...

I personally think this film could be a major contributor to helping show people some of the things going on in the appropriate technologies world today, and making permaculture better understood and desired by more people. But we are going to need lots of help to make it happen!

Please show your support by giving this thread a thumbs up and sharing it with everyone you can!

Would this be one long movie or will it be in parts? What things are needed to make this movie happen?

I think Michael is planning for a feature-length, with parts focusing on each specific project. I'm not sure, but I have it in mind as a similar format to the Free Heat movie, as that was focused on projects from the Rocket Mass Heater Jamboree.

As someone who would love to have the free-time to come up for one of these (but can't seem to locate the pause button on daily life) it would be great to watch a feature film to get a snippet of insight into how the Jamborees work.

An accompanying handbook with the projects and guidelines for completing them would be excellent as well...though I'm sure those could be pieced together across the forums.

Michael, will the film cover the kiln in depth?  I'm thinking interest will be particularly high in a deep analysis and discussion of the two (or more) versions of the Rocket Kiln.

A Permaculture Technology Jamboree movie would be so great!

It would be a wonderful teaching film and show how much fun it is to learn at Wheaton Labs!

What can we do to help move the project forward?

Thank you Michael!

This would be one feature length movie, about 2 hours long. All the parts are there, the most important thing is generating awareness and excitement about the project, so we can be sure that making the film will be worthwhile for the creator and the instructors.

The rocket kiln is definitely the highlight and most talked about project. I'm not going to say anyone could watch the movie and then go build one, but we do drive the point of what it is and how important it is.

The pieces are all there, the main thing now is to make people aware of it and generate hype so that we can make sure the instructors in the film and the creators are rewarded for their efforts.

Michael, it sounds like a fantastic idea/project, I'm just thinking you're going to have a hard time editing all the many interesting projects! It would be fun to see a short reel of bloopers if you have any, at the end too :)

I'd be super interested in watching this as I live overseas and couldn't be there in person.

Maybe it would be worthwhile putting together a short trailer to generate interest - is that possible?

Awesome idea. One way to generate interest is to release parts as a serial (same as some books are released). This may also help with managing time/money (instead of doing a Kickstarter), the footage could be divided into topics, each edited separately, generating some income, adjustments made per feedback and finally polished into a final full length edition.
Heck, you may even find a full-length version is unnecessary!
The serialized parts could be 'teasers' or rough drafts, then resources devoted to the most in-demand.

I would be very interested in this too, especially the powerless water collection and the raw egg preservation. And, of course, the rocket mass stove! Great idea all around in my opinion.

If the choice for the next Kickstarter is between this and the playing cards, I vote this. It will appeal to more people - the playing cards are cool, but I suspect only people already fairly familiar with permaculture will care. The content of the Tech Jamboree, however, will appeal to more people, especially if the film gives examples and how-to kind of info.

Taking a quick look, here are my rough ideas for rewards so far:

$1 thanks

$10 the final movie as HD streaming

$20 the final movie tiny download

$40 the final movie HD download

$65 all of the above plus plans from Andres

$80 all of the above plus extended interviews PLUS a few live interactive webinars with the instructors

$100 all of the above plus your name in the movie!

Here are some other suggestions.

I breed Native Milking Shorthorns (a rare heritage breed) which is historically a triple purpose breed - milk, meat and as oxen. I would love a segment of a movie on crafting a yoke and starting animals in a yoke as a means of doing many tasks that currently fall to ATV, tractor, etc. My cows are pets, on their way to becoming dairy cows, but there is no reason why they couldn't do a bit of work around the place and not just eat.

I'd be interested any 'how to' segments on tanning hides and using leather.

I would also like to experiment with making linen - from planting to harvesting to processing to using the fibers.

I'm guessing you are looking for the '23 PTJ planning thread. This one is about deciding which events from the '22 PTJ to focus on for editing and presenting in media.

I think about now we need to figure out what we wanna do for a kickstarter video.

Gotta firm up the rewards.

Maybe start outlining "the story".

What is our funding goal?

We need a title and a "blurb".  We will also need a primary image.

Looking at previous Kickstarter seems the sweet spot is somewhere between 2–3.5 minute video. Is there scope to animate as they are particularly awesome (and popular)?

I saw a sneak peak of Michael's trailer - the first 2 minutes or so of that play out, visually speaking, almost like a good kickstarter video.

Maybe we need to start working on the script for the kickstarter video, and craft the video around that.

One idea for the script - often we base the concept around the event.  I wonder if, instead of basing the script around the PTJ event, we base it around the idea of research and development around permaculture and homesteading projects in general.

Something like:

I'm Paul Wheaton, and this is my 13th Kickstarter.

My people and I believe that many of the world's biggest problems can be solved in a garden - that homesteading and permaculture offer the most elegant solutions to to the world's problems, big and small.  Problems like: how do people who care about their health and their local and global ecosystems feed, clothe, and shelter themselves?

We talk about these things all the time.  And a few years ago, we started an event called the Permaculture Technology Jamboree as a think-tank, research and development summit, and proof-of-concept showcase for the latest and greatest innovations and developments in the realms of homesteading, permaculture, and appropriate technology.

This kickstareter is to fund a movie showing off our most recent innovations, which took place at the 2022 Permaculutre Technology Jamboree at Wheaton Labs.  These projects include:
- harvesting clothes from livestock
- harvesting clean water from dry land
- storing a million calories for a year
- firing a ceramics kiln without massive amounts of fossil fuel
- the search for healthy, ecologically sensible insulation
- making functional furnishings from home-grown wood

We have all the footage, and it looks magnificent.  The only remaining question for this kickstarter is - do people want this information enough to pay for the editing and distribution?

I love this - actually I must admit having previously skipped past mentions of the PTJ as the word 'technology' has tuned me out somehow. When reading this blurb though, I'm thinking 'yes! This is definitely something I'm into/would support'. Maybe there are others like me who could do with this sort of approach  We could even include something like 'Technophobes - prepare to be converted' or something like that...

I think showcasing the technologies themselves will have wider appeal to newbie homesteaders than a theme of the need for continuing R&D. Get the newbies hooked and awestruck, then push the 'necessary R&D' theme once you have them in the community.

People are homesteading because they are worried about starving or being made homeless. With inflation running at a much higher level than the gov't is admitting, plus the rise in numbers of families relying on foodbanks for basic needs and a rise of 16% in retail credit card debt, I think newbies want to succeed first try and are less interested in experimentation.

Regardless of approach, I'll be in as usual.

I'm Paul Wheaton, and this is my 13th Kickstarter.

hmmmm ....

maybe something about hosting the PTJ for years and we have built a lot of really cool stuff (pics and vids) ...  and this year we had a fella with fancy video gear (showcase some of the stuff)  ....    and now my mind is reeling with ideas ....  we could put out a full length movie of all this stuff!  And if we get enough backers, we could hire more instructors and build MORE stuff and make MORE movies!  This could be the beginning of something HUGE!

...

and then we go into the footage of what was captured this year ...

...

and then the whole video ends with text on the screen that says something like "This stuff is expensive!  Give us monies!" and the voiceover is something like "That's the big kickstarter question: do enough people want this to pay for the editing?"

So, a really rough start ...

Hey Paul - I think its not just about hawking for money for this particular kickstarter, its also important to flag the years of experience and knowledge captured in the Permies library that folks can seek out and purchase a bit at a time too. Pulling in another several hundred folks that previously were too busy to do much with this community because they were slaving trying to keep their job (like me), but who are now panicked that they are no where near ready to live without all the stuff it seems we will soon have to live without.

You've done some great kickstarters, and I've helped fund a few of them - but the times and conditions we are all living in now, is unique and the context of the past 10 years simply doesn't help with interpreting the here and now.

Majoring on the theme of 'give us money to play' would be less powerful today than the message of 'what we've learned over the years, you can apply and survive with dignity' - 'come learn from us'.

Those are my thoughts.....I'm in regardless of the final approach taken.

I always thought the "give us monies!" bit was kinda funny.  Not funny?
