Mornin' Permies!
.
Jumped on your Kickstarter and saw you had 999 backers, thought that I should push it on to the 4 digit club.
.
Congratulations on your successful launch.

Thanks Mike!

Looking back at my past kickstarters ....

light bulbs:  58 backers
wood burning stoves 2.0: 920 backers
permaculture playing cards: 1243 backers
world domination gardening: 1404 backers
better wood heat: 2022 backers
PDC/ATC video: 989 backers

So, one important thing is that we have more backers for this kickstarter than for our last kickstarter!

I've been talking to Dan, davin and several other people about what another stretch goal might look like if we happen to get that far.

I just heard from davin that rocket oven plans are still in the works.   They are not far enough along to be a possible stretch goal at this time.

But ....   on the last day of the ATC, another j-tube for the rocket oven was built and there was some video taken.  I haven't looked at that video yet, but that has some potential.

And one of the ATC students is a videographer, so we went up to the lab and recorded some video about the wofatis, the skiddable structures and the rocket mass heaters.   So those three projects become possibilities for microdocs.

Things have slowed down a lot, so maybe we won't need any more stretch goals.   At the same time, for some of my past kickstarters, the last five days have been the biggest earning days for the whole kickstarter, so maybe we should have seven or eight more stretch goals ready!

So I just had an idea for a Rocket Oven Installation.

Would it be reasonable to connect an outdoor Rocket Oven to the end of Heat Exchange Channels which run through thermal mass inside a home?

My thinking is using the draft power to do early morning summer cooking to draw out as much heat as possible and replace it with the early morning cool, while getting cooking energy at the same time.

Say baking breakfast Quiche or heating a roast or stew to stash in the Easy Bake Coffin for dinner or somesuch.

Unfortunately, I cannot spare any money until September. The kickstarter ends in a few days. I was hoping to buy it as soon as I can afford to for my 3 season kitchen that I plan to build next year-ish.

Ryan,

I think we will eventually sell the rocket oven dvd later.  But it won't be nearly as sweet of a deal as the kickstarter.

The pizza party is now a sure thing!

October 5th, 6th and 7th.   Starting at 6pm on Friday, October 6th.  Although people can show up earlier in the day and get settled in and visit and stuff.    And it is expected that everybody will have moved on before Sunday, the 7th, at 5pm.

I will send out invites to lots of people.   Rocket mass heater people.  Rocket oven people.   We'll see who all wants to come.

When the time comes, I will send something out via the kickstarter stuff.  Everybody who wants to come will send me an email.   I will then look up all those accounts and the top 20 kickstarter contributors will get an invite.    We did something like this during the world domination gardening kickstarter.   About 40 people said they wanted to come and 20 were invited.   One of those people got the invite because their pledge was $1 higher than the next highest pledge.   So they just added a dollar.   Some people added two dollars.

Once the 20 people are selected, those 20 people will be able to rent a bunk here if they want.  But early october is perfectly acceptable camping weather for here.  There might be snow, but it will definitely be above freezing during the day.

We will do a full tour of all of wheaton labs, including all of the rocket mass heaters.  And, of course, everybody will get a chance to use the rocket oven, the rocket griddles, the rocket cooktops, the rocket stoves, the rocket hot water ....   everything!

Any boots in the permaculture bootcamp will be able to attend also.

Two new stretch goals ....

$60,000 Stretch Goal:   A whole new build of a J-Tube.   We just finished up our Third Annual ATC.  Chris "Uncle Mud" McClellan wanted to take up the challenge of building a better J-Tube with more insulation and no welding.   If we hit this stretch goal, we will find a way to squeeze this build into the DVD!

$65,000 Stretch Goal:   A Microdoc of the 12 Rocket Mass Heaters at Wheaton Labs.   The pebble style rocket mass heaters at the fisher price house (J-tube), the library (J-Tube) and the classroom (batch box).  Cob style rocket mass heaters at cooper cabin (J-tube), the tipi (J-tube) and the bun warmer (J-tube).   Tiny house rocket mass heaters at the red cabin (batch box), the love shack (J-tube), the woodshop (J-tube cottage rocket) and allerton abbey (double shoebox batch box).  Plus the smoker and the outdoor season extender.

Glancing at the Kickstarter page, I don't see a $100 level (gapper fee) listed.  With the pizza party coming up, that'd be a good level to upgrade to - so you might want to check on it.

Maybe I'm just missing something (I have really slow internet) - but I looked at the bottom of the page to see if the slots at that level were "All Gone" and didn't see it.

Jane, you are correct, there is no $100 pledge level. The Gapper fee just happens to be $100, and pledges exceeding that amount will get the Gapper fee waived.

You may be able to pledge ANY dollar amount, say $103.00, which would meet the requirement for the Stretch Goal of the Gapper fee waiver and also get you the $80.00 reward level stuff.

Beautiful rocket oven update:

So, making a mosaic takes a long time!  A really, REALLY long time.  The oven is finished (pictures a couple pages back) and works great.

I went out to the farm Friday afternoon to work on the mosaic and brought along some pizza fixin's.  When it was time for dinner, I put on my harvesting apron (it's got a big pocket, like a kangaroo) and wandered around the yard picking up dry sticks.  When I had an armful, I went back to the oven, and that's all I needed to heat it up to 550F (up to 600F for a while) and cook my pizza.

I was tickled to be tidying up the yard and getting ready for dinner at the same time.

Here's my mosaic thus far - I've created a nice little spiral from commercial "tesserae" tiles and also an old broken Spode plate and pieces from a broken bowl.

Thanks Paul and  Kenneth. Guess I assumed that since Paul's email referenced a $100 amount, there was a reward amount to match.

Paul, if you were to add a $100 reward at this late date, with web and email pizazz to create renewed gusto, it might generate competition amongst the current Kickstarter supporters to make it to the pizza party.   Not sure if it would be worth the extra effort, but it is something you could use if you want to do a "Look Again - we're doing even more" email.

Jane,

What might we put in a $100 reward?

Been there. Done that. Went back for more. But this time, I took this tiny ad with me:
