Are you viewing permies on mobile by chance?

You should see a "Post Reply" button at the bottom left of the thread.

Ian, in the subject line you wrote this: "How to get REPLY button on each post"

In your "post" you wrote: "None of my screens (am logged in) have a  "obvious" way to post a replys? "

So in "permies speak",  a post is each small contribution a member writes, and you are correct, each contribution doesn't have it's own button and it's own chain of comments the way a program like Youtube has.

Permies values and promotes perennial threads, so any post you make on an existing thread is added to the very bottom.
Once you find and press the "Post Reply" button that Timothy Norton pointed out, that is what will happen.

However, if you want to comment specifically on someone's post, that is what the "Quote" button is for.  On desktop, it's in the row of buttons like the Thumbs up, and the Report! (please press and leave a brief comment if you see spam or nastiness, and staff will come along with their electronic brooms and tidy it up.)

I'm not sure where it is on mobile devices, as I'm a dinosaur.  However, if you can find the quote button, you do *not* have to quote the entire post if you only want to refer to a paragraph of it. We appreciate it if in particular, unnecessary photos are deleted, as they take up a lot of space on the page and bandwidth on mobile devices. If the photo is essential to what you want to comment on, then by all means, leave it in place.

We do have a number of very helpful volunteers who use mobile devices, and you've come to the right place to ask questions to help you contribute easily. I think that stating the type of device you're using, can help the helpers?

Permies is a bit unique and the learning curve for some of us is steep, but totally worth the climb!

I feel a fix for what you are wanting would be to click on Quote.

The outcome would be almost the same as having a reply button on each post.

That's  the easiest, still can't locate a reply button but it would  help if someone could  tell  me if that is an  option that can be switched on/off by me or an admin.
am not on mobile btw

On desktop view you should find the reply button on the bottom left of your page.

Permies did have a reply button on each post for a while, but it got very confusing trying to work out which post people were referring to, so we went back to the single reply button.

Perhaps this

Permies has a linear thread style sorted chronologically. We reply to the whole thread.

Somewhere like reddit has a nesting threads, where people reply to individual posts.

mine looks like this, I see the reply button but on the long threads it is impossibly far away from the post I want to reply TO.
Now I want to paste the screen grab but it's not a simple 'paste' ctrlV
I use a snip tool called ClipMate which saves all Ctrl C  to a file, I had  to convert to a jpg and save on HD in order to paste in here.

far away from the post I want to reply TO

Here, we reply to threads, not posts.  The conversation is perennial.   We have active threads that are over 20 years old.  Not everyone is still active who started the thread, but the conversation continues.  Replying to a post doesn't work in this context as it may never get seen.  But replying to a thread means many people can see it and possibly even the person you want to hear from.

You can quote a post if you want, when replying to a thread (hint, put your reply OUTSIDE the square brackets).  But there is not a way to "reply to a post" here, at this time.

Whichever post you are replying to, your new post will show up at the end of the thread and it's generally better to read until the end of the thread before replying anyway in my experience.

I generally use the scroll bar to get up and down the page faster.

Try hitting the quote button to see if that works for you.

Edit to say:  the quote button is on the upper right hand side on each post.

I use the quote button a lot for that very reason.
For some subjects and questions and answers there can be misunderstandings if there's no clear reference point.

I think the quote button works as well as a direct reply to a post.

you can also copy and paste the relevant part that you would like to reply to and put it within the quote brackets using the button above the reply box.

While you write a reply, there is a section called “review message” in which you can see previous replies. Scroll down to the one you are thinking of if you need to keep it handy.
