Jesikah will be hanging out in the forums until September 7th, 2018, answering questions and sharing her experiences with you all.

At the end of the week, we'll make a draw for 4 lucky winners to win a copy ofher book! From now until Friday, all new posts in the Ecovillage forum are eligible to win.

To win, you must use a name that follows our naming policy and you must have your email set up to receive the Daily-ish email.

The winners will be notified by Personal Moosage and must respond within 24 hours. Only the winners who respond within that timeframe will receive their book. Watch for a PM, and a notice in this thread announcing the winners!


Please remember that we favor perennial discussion.  The threads you start will last beyond the event.  You don't need to use Jesikah's name get her attention (though if you have an author-specific question, like "Jesikah, when you wrote your book, did it inspire you to garden differently?" we understand having her name in the title of that thread. But...). We like these threads to be accessible to everyone, and some people may not post their experiences if the thread is directed to the author alone.

It seems like a lot of the good books coming out are self-published, not so formula.  I will check out your publishing company.  I'd love to write a book someday.   I'd need a really good editor..LOL.

Thank you It's a strange genre-mashup that circles around eco-themes in dystopian and utopian settings. Lots of social commentary.

If you ever get a chance to read my series, I hope my characters do their job and entertain you

That is correct! Even well-known traditionally published authors are migrating toward self-publishing. More freedom to express your art without "trend" limitations. Though, even within Indie publishing, there are trends ;-) Where there is a market demand, there will be goods waiting to be consumed.

I hope you do :-) Writing and publishing are an immensely satisfying experience. And . . . don't we all :-P Writers are storytellers. Editors make us look like writers ;-) LOL

Good Morning and a hearty welcome to the Permies Forum Jesikah, I hope you have fun and learn a wealth of knowledge here like I and many others do.

As an avid reader and a follower of T. C. Boyle, the I have read his fascinating book "The Terranauts, a Novel" based upon a real biodome experiment in Arizona, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thus, I am so looking forward to reading "your take" on a micro-society living in isolated biodome conditions. This is a very believable topic that I can see developing more and more in our already very fractured society.

Thanks for adding to our perceptions of what can be done and the challenges it will entail.

I just went to Amazon to read the synopsis and reviews and found that you are very generously offering the digital
version of your book to Amazon Prime members for Free!
(At least for today's date, and Tuesday 04 September is 2018)).

As I have gone 99% digital for all of my reading over the past 5 years, I helped myself to a copy and promise to read it
(as soon as I finish the current book I am on) and leave an honest review.

I will also send you a copy of any typos, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure "errors"  that
I find, if any, for you to correct.

Hope you sell a million to those folks who still "have to"  hold a paper-made copy of a book in their hands.

Hello Jesikah,

Welcome to permies, just a quick note.   I have been reading indie sci-fi authors on Amazon.com for a number of years. And I have found the writing for the most part to be just as good as many big name authors. I even proofread for several of my favorite authors. What an awesome opportunity to live in the day and age we do and to be able to publish your own books. Hope you have a great time here.

PS. I have actually read your book, did it get published under a different title earlier?  I read it about a year ago.  Awesome book.  I’ll have to ask my daughter where she got the book, she works at a bookstore.

Ooooh, yes! My series is actually inspired by The Biosphere 2 Project, which I quote throughout my series. Synergetic Press (in AZ, originally owned by one of the owners, Bass) assisted me in research as did many of the graduate students at the University of Arizona, who now manage the biodomes. Fascinating topic for sure

Just wondering: the world outside the dome is described as a technologically advanced dystopia; but medieval social structures were also quite dystopian. Is this fact addressed in the story?

Hi Jason

Fabulous question and YES! While the biodome community has the glamour of a utopia, the fact is, one doesn't exist. Where there is a quest for power and control, people will always suffer. But how "the suffering of humanity" is defined is not only cultural but environmental. So one might argue that the biodome community isn't a true dystopia because of [fill in the blank] while others can say BUT they are confined and isolated and raising their children to live in an artificial world that will eventually end. *gestures hands to mimic scales* Each have their own psychological hardships and traumas.

And . . . the medieval biodome community exists during a technologically advanced dystopia, even if they are not technologically advanced like their outsider counterparts.

Hey Tamara,

Sure thing! My inspiration came mostly from the Biosphere 2 Project from the early 1990's, some of Elon Musk's projects-in-progress and green tech / Mars colonization ideas for the future, and my own personal desire to explore what it means to embrace a more holistic, organic life within a high-tech society/culture. On the human side of things, I also wanted to explore nature vs nurture and use parent-child relationships as a metaphor for how we, as a people, interact with our environment. I'm a theme-heavy writer, so many layers to explore and peel away in my series :)
