I added three new videos to the PIE private forum:

  - presentation by Helen Atthowe

  - the "eco poser" video by Chad Sentman

  - the Justin Rhodes bonus video

Personally, I didn't like it, but that was because (1) the link to the rest of the thread was small and kind of hard to locate, and (2) I ended up on the "full screen" mode when navigating from page 4 to page 1. I didn't want to have to load two pages just to get to page 1 of the thread.

Perhaps, if a person clicks on "page 1" they get taken to the first page of the thread. If they click on the title, they get taken to the full-page view, and the full page view has a nice, easy-to-locate link to the rest of the thread?

I think the reception has been all positive.  Not huge raves - but generally positive.  

I didn't want to make the video public without your permission and you never responded, so I started giving it away with patreon and then pie!

I really enjoyed Chad's video.  He has a lovely voice.  

For a very long time the system was configured so that people would get a free piece of PIE every 20 apples.   The algorithm is being changed so that people will get a piece of PIE after 20 apples, but not every 20 apples.

Do you mean they get a slice of PIE only when they have (their first) 20 apples? So I won't get free PIE anymore? Or isn't that what you mean?

When a person gets to 20 apples, they get a slice of free pie.  

When a person gets to 40 apples, or 60 apples or 80 apples, no more free pie.  

Of course, whenever somebody gives you pie, you get pie.  

This is all part of the staff trying to deal with stuff in the cider press.  This is one of the strategies to make it so that there are fewer posts to the cider press - so less staff time gets sucked into the cider press.

I don't know what was in the cider press, I don't visit that often.

Is it possible buy pie without a paypal account? I saw a request to enable guest purchases through paypal a couple of pages back.

I've had pie before and some of the features were useful but I don't think it should be necessary to get a paypal account to support the site.

At this point, payment is paypal-only, but I believe you can make a purchase through paypal with a credit or debit card, even if you don't have a paypal account.  Do you have the option of entering credit card information after you click the pie purchase link?

I've tried just entering payments details but it's pushing to get phone numbers and email addresses.

Judging from this thread, and confirmed by 3 expirements, I have been able to buy pie through paypal without an account by using Paypal Guest Checkout.

This worked for me on desktop, but not on mobile!  Paypal changes things around sometimes, but this seems to be the case at the moment.

James, do you have access to a desktop to make your purchase?

So both firefox and chrome are giving that mobile type view on my mac (catalina 10.15.7). I'll try again tomorrow on a windows machine.

Hey Beau. That's the page I get.

System: Linux, Debian Bullseye. Raspberry Pi Desktop OS, running off a 32GB thumb drive on a scrounged Panasonic CF-52 Toughbook. Chromium browser locked down as much as possible, third party cookies disabled, Ghostery blocking all.

Note that I have not tried an actual transaction -- usually some third party cookies are needed.

What happens if you just don't enter anything into the lower section where it asks for phone etc.? To me it looks like that's optional and you can still complete the transaction above.

I tried your link Beau and nada.

I tried a private window in chrome on windows 11, same in edge. In private mode and not.

I'm suspecting something to do with geolocation. I'm gonna grab Tor and try that.

The guest checkout option will be shown based on your preference whenever possible, however PayPal will make a decision to not allow guest checkout in some circumstances depending on a varity of details e.g. customers browser, cookies, locale, IP etc.

Further reading illuminates that, usually when guest checkout is disabled, it is due to geographic location. I am guessing this is the case for you, James. There are also some instances where paypal may turn off guest checkout for a certain card or ip address after a certain number of guest transactions.  

While this doesn't give me an answer to your specific situation, it does point to the most likely possibilities, and gives me some more ideas to pursue.

Question - are you able to check out as a guest through paypal via other merchants?

That absolutely makes sense. I'll see if I can try someone's vpn around here. If that doesn't work, it'll have to wait till I'm out of of africa for a bit in December.

My favourite pie feature,  the ability to change the display date in the forums to the actual data instead of X years ago.
