This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Community.

In this Badge Bit, you will make a meal for 8 people, and clean up after it!

For ideas of what to cook, check out the threads in our kitchen forum, such as:

Dinner Party Frugality
Cooking with Dry Beans and Peas
Real Fast Food Challenge - 10 Minute Recipes?
If a vegan friend visited you today, what could you make for them?

For tips on washing dishes effectively and with minimal water, check out washing dishes by hand vs. dishwasher

To qualify for this Badge Bit:
- prepare all the food for 8 people
- clean up all the dishes, pots and pans, etc used to cook and serve the food
- as in the Food Prep and Preservation aspect, no aluminum or teflon/coated cookware, microwave ovens or plastic touching the food (including bowls and utensils) is allowed

To document this Badge Bit:
- post a list of all the foods you are serving, and say how many people you served
- a picture of the food being prepared
- a picture of the 8 people eating your food! (we assume you are person #9 behind the camera)
- a picture of the dishes being cleaned up
- a picture of a clean kitchen and dining area

Elemental Ecology (zach weiss) was at my place to do soil samples and earthworks planning. This was a good time to earn this badge.(and why i got distracted from learning to make BB's)

I was proud of the amount of "homestead" produced items i used in preparations. Meat never left my place. It was born, raised, harvested, and butchered here. Same with turkey broth i used as a base. Salt and carrots were made or grown here.

The night before i cubed the lamb (1 leg, 2 shoulders). I added a quart of turkey broth and onions. Salt and pepper. Water to fill. This was pressured cooked then put in fridge.

I started a rustic bread. Mixed ingrediants, kneaded it, then set it aside to rise.

In the AM. I kneaded the bread (2 hours before it goes in oven). I put lamb in pot. Added cut potatoes and carrots.  Set it on simmer.

At that point i was actively involved in the outside project. I asked my wife to run up and preheat oven, put bread in, and turn the heat up on the stew.

8 were invited, 6 showed up. I should have made 3 breads. I think it would have been gone. 3 made dinner out of the stew, so 9 meals were eaten over the day.

They were given samples of my mustang grape wine. 3 ate a fresh asparagus spear (picked 2 days prior).

Vivian shared a mushroom tea. Chaga mushroom from (quebec). She talked highly of the mediicinal values of it.

It was hard on the dishes part. Lol. Cause they all wanted to help. I was like "NO! I'VE GOT TO EARN MY MERIT BADGE!". They got a kick out of it.

The participants were Zach, Cassie, and Viviane(sp?) From elental group. Angela that we met at Zachs presentation, my wife and I.

It was a great day. I slept good that night.

Staff note (paul wheaton) :

i was decined for not having 8 people. I'm not arguing it, just thought it worthy to point out to anyone attempting this - invite extra people or get ready to call in the neighbors.

Dang Wayne nice job! That looks delicious and I wish I could have been there :)

To help me understand (and admittedly also in Wayne's defense) I ask for some clarification. In the requirements, it clearly states:

To qualify for this Badge Bit:
- prepare all the food for 8 people
- clean up all the dishes, pots and pans, etc used to cook and serve the food.

Nowhere does it say eight people must attend and consume the meal. From the pictures, it appears there may be enough for eight folks. Should the qualification requirements contain more details?

I think Wayne gets an A for effort, inviting eight and planning for eight.

It's true, no where did this BB say that there had to be eight people present for the meal. And that also wasn't specified in the community badge page (https://permies.com/wiki/pep-badge-community). Though, Paul did edit the workshop BB (https://permies.com/wiki/101825/PEP-BB-community-sand-teach) to say that 8 people had to be there for the WHOLE TIME. Maybe this one should be edited to say that, too?

Either way, I'm giving Wayne a ton of apples and pie for his delicious dinner. Maybe he can use them to cook up another group meal, or just enjoy them for himself.

I believe that's only fair. I think that would be helpful and reduce any confusion and disappointment that may occur from people reading, and meeting the requirements of one set of pep badge instructions, but not a different set of instructions located on a different thread, and being denied the badge they worked hard for.

I think Wayne clearly met all the criteria listed in the instructions above.

Let me reiterate i stated this for the benefit of others. It is a peP.AUL. Please don't turn it into peFAIR or peUNFAIR. That wasn't my point.

I was able to prepare a homegrown home cooked meal for 3 of the most fascinating people on the planet. I'm still in awe over the day.

When I started the forums, most of the users felt that my moderating was "wrong" but I stuck to my guns and now 99.99% of other forums have disolved and this one is still growing strong.  I think that good people appreciate being part of something that has good, strong standards.

I am confident that wayne will serve another meal and get this BB sorted later.  I will update the BB to make it clear about eight people.

A sweet potato casserole thing: sweet potatoes, celery, red peppers, garlic, quinoa, onions and a vegetable broth. With a side salad and cucumbers. And for dessert banana bread.

- a picture of the food being prepared

- a picture of the 8 people eating your food! (we assume you are person #9 behind the camera)

- a picture of the dishes being cleaned up

- a picture of a clean kitchen and dining area
Staff note (Dave Burton) :
