community
instruction, regulation, insurance, safety, etc

Community can mean so many things.  For the sake of this aspect, “community” is about bringing dozens of productive gardeners onto the same land - possibly under the same roof.  Permaculture is largely about replacing petroleum with people.  The intent of this aspect is to show Otis how you will be able to attract and retain a community of productive gardeners to help his land thrive for decades to come.

Note that the BBs in this aspect are brutally focused on the tasks that could help BUILD the very exact flavor of community we are seeking.  We have plucked out the hundreds of suggested BBs that were about experiencing community or building other types of community.

Shawn and I are currently working on the iron badge, but I think this one is far enough along to share.

When we first started this badge, it seemed like it might end up a bit too challenging.  But it has ended up being one of the easier and more fund badges!

I am posting this here now in the hopes that people have more ideas for the "thorn list", the "gulch list" and the "knot list".

As you can see, each thing can have a bunch of pics to show it was done - thus validate it.   There might be the need for some video.

As we did this, we thought about things that would definitely BUILD community (as opposed to be something that people would simply experience in community).

We decided that preparing a meal for people would be a solid build for community.  Hosting a potluck can build community, but it can also be a bit iffy - if a few people don't bring anything, or bring something really lame, that can lead to resentments, which is poison to community.

I think the LIC stuff is gonna prove out to be a magnificent strength component of the community stuff.

Will there not be any experience with intentional community and/or living with people in the community badges?

What about groups, already small 'communities', who organise activities to 'grow' a larger community. Our group organises many of the things mentioned here (in Sand Badge), but we do it together. Could there be something like a 'group badge'?

So let's say that for the wood badge you have to share a kitchen with a dozen people for two months.

Did you build community, or did you simply tolerate community?  Did you end up actually poisoning community?   How do you measure how you did?  Can you take a picture?  A video?  How do you prove that you built community.

What would be a two month community gig that would fit with the other wood badge BBs?

I think this is my favorite thing ever.

brand a piece of equipment
 requires
    name
    the keys carry the name
 examples
ranger doug (our little pickup truck)
    rex (the excavator)
add some sort of interesting flair/character to the equipment

The E in PEX stands for experience! You experienced intentional community first hand!  And the value in that is maybe now you know you can't stand that sort of thing and can avoid it in the future.

paul wheaton wrote:How do you measure how you did?  Can you take a picture?  A video?  How do you prove that you built community.

I guess if you can tough it out for the time allotted by the program and you don't get kicked out, you pass.  A daily picture/video blog like the one required for the wofati experience on the for the natural building iron badge.

paul wheaton wrote:What would be a two month community gig that would fit with the other wood badge BBs?

Two months in a community for a wood badge?  I was thinking a week long workshop or maybe 4 weekends would be a nice chunk of the wood badge, and 2 straight weeks would be part of the iron badge.

WWOOFing is another option.

I start thinking about that now.

The first things coming to my mind is:
- have a meeting together, starting with an agenda, talk about all topics on the agenda in (about) one hour
- during that meeting (one hour) come to a decision all present there are (fairly) content on, about at least one topic

I hope you understand what I mean.

I think this would fit perfect in improve an already branded location!

Or, maybe even in public art, if it's done nicely!

This might be silly, but what about a BB for making badges for other people who've earned badges?  Maybe something on a thin piece of wood.  Or sewn.   Or needlepointed.  Or welded.  Or woven.

But basically a little badge that you mail to someone who completed their badge so they can have a physical token of permies awesomeness.

Thanks, I'll run them past Paul when I get a chance.  I wanted to post them here so I didn't forget.  For many of the badges, we're adding points to them so that we can have a much bigger list of items and the PEPper can just chose which ones they want to do in order to accumulate the required number of points.

We are having a community garbage pickup in our local forest next weekend, I image its in line with permies values and could be possibly added in some form to BBs.

# Sand -  Collect garbage in your area - at least 1 full shopping bag.  / solo mission - for good of everyone
# Straw / Wood -  Orginize / Attend garbage collection event in your area.   /  community interaction neccesary.
