This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Nest.

In this Badge Bit, you will install a really good, layered, winter curtain system.

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
   - at least 3 windows
   - valance
   - washable sacrificial layer (next to the glass)
   - at least 3 layers (blinds can count as a layer)
   - won’t mold easily
   - natural fabric

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must provide proof of the following with pictures (or a video < 2 mins long):
   - before, during, and after of installing a really good, layered, winter curtain system
   - demonstrate it meets the above stated requirements

Can I make a deal . . . I’ll cover four windows so long as I don’t have to install a valance . . . I want my house to be my home, not my mother-in-laws . . .

I believe the idea is that the curtains are free to move and open.  Since there are some gaps you would want air to not convectively rise/fall against the glass.  The valence is a functional way to keep air from rising out the top between the wall and the curtain.

Your design was tucked into the window (Edward's curtain system) so it acts differently than this BB intended.  Perhaps better.....   But a valence wouldn't be needed for your design.

Unfortunately this one is written for a free hanging curtain design so it does require the valence...

I would like to repurpose some old torn bedsheets for the washable  sacrificial layer, but I think they are cotton-synthetic blends. Are upcycled synthetics alright for this badge but?
