PIE stands for Permaculture Inner Circle Elite - it's a special classification for members on this site that gives you access to great discounts from our vendors, as well as the private Pie forum, and a variety of handy little features in the forums too, just because we love you.
The idea is that you can get pie in a variety of ways:
Once you have received Pie, you can access all of those spiffy features and discounts. You'll get an email by default (unless you adjust your settings) when you get a piece of pie, and you can track you pies under 'Pie' at the very tippy top of your forum screen.
This thread is a great place to ask about pie and make suggestions for pie for the future.
How many apples to get a pie?
Do you lose apples to gain the pie or is it like a level system (no loss of apples when a pie is acquired; automatically get a pie every (x) amount of apples)?
How do I buy a pie?
Do all pies look the same or are there different pies depending on how you acquire your pie?
I think once you get ten apples, you will get one piece of pie. I'm not sure if this is implemented yet or not.

No loss of apples - just free pie. I am also hoping that this will be automatic.
How do I buy a pie?
I think we might be minutes away from activating that. There will be a link at the top of every forum page. Betweem "Permaculture wiki" and "recent topics"

I do wish to point out that when it came to art for this project, we went to the very best artist on staff who sported the allie brosh style of art. That would be me.
My friend bob jaffe ran for city council and I needed a pie image for a video. The pie makes two very important appearances in this campaign:
Later, I needed to make a professional pie chart of awesomeness to show annual typical household energy consumption, so I used the image again:
If you have a thread and you wish to draw attention to it, you have a single piece of pie that you can place on the thread that you wish to have the most attention. In the lists of threads, that thread will be marked with a piece of pie.
If somebody writes an excellent post, or they have helped you in some way, you give one or more pieces of pie for THAT post.
Once you have pie, then if you look in the "my profile" link at the top you will see a section of options called "pie only preferences". Today there are three options:
[ ] Show a piece of pie next to my name
[ ] Remove the woody background image.
[ ] Turn off banner ads
But I think that over the next week or so there might be a dozen.

You don't lose apples when you buy a pie. But unlike apples, pies are not permanent - at the end of each month, one pie slice expires. For instance, if you buy a whole pie (a pie consists of 12 slices), it will expire after 12 months.

Do you see the pie link?
I see the link and when I click it, I get info about my pies, as well as the link to buy more.
I like seeing the info for it.
paul wheaton wrote:Penny, I just gave you a piece of pie for your post. Did you get an email about it?
Yes I received the email this morning. And thanks for the pie!

Okay, thanks for the clarification.
Edit to add - Bought a pie, and handed some slices out. Everything is working very nicely.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a huge fan of this idea. It seems like it will only give people with more money to throw away a greater voice and more influence on what gets talked about.

Yes!
Those people that support this site and support that best contributors get more candy!
Great contributors get more candy!
Generous people get more candy!
And with all of this we can continue to add more and more features! And get more projects done!
Ok, I bought a pie. How does the pie expiration work? I have twelve pieces, they will all be mine for twelve months? Or do I lose one pie per month? If I give a pie to someone else, how long do they have it for? If I give a pie to a quality post, is it marked with pie forever or does that go away after a month?

1 slice = 1 month
you got 1 pie, so you have 12 slices.
At the end of each month, one slice will be taken off your plate, so at the end of twelve months, you'd have no slices left. When you have no slices left, you wouldn't have access to the pie-only features.
Let's say you give two slices to someone who has no pies. With your 2 slices, he/she will be able to enjoy the pie elite for a couple of months. Pie icon on the post will be there forever.
If you give two slices to someone with four pies, they would be able to enjoy the pie elite for six months instead of four.

I don't have money to throw away but I do appreciate the way permies.com works is we get loads of free info while Paul and others do a lot of unpaid work. More than happy for permies.com to get a dollar off me for a slice.
Edit .. Where's my pie icon?
Edit 2... Aah its in the pie only settings.
Really excellent idea and implementation Devaka and Paul and everyone who has worked on it and testing it.
Re: $ and influence... supporters get an easier say in how things run, that's just life and human nature. BUT... Paul has designed this so you can earn $ outside, or you can earn your own pie here by being useful to others and a real contributor. Give and get pie for contributions, I think it sounds like a very fair system, well done!
Kudos! I'd go find an applause thingy but then I get distracted and I have way too much to actually get done today. <g>
I was super on board with the pie because it was reasonably priced, I think it's nice to see someone ask a reasonable price for this, please consider what is reasonable when the price increases, I have seen quite steep prices to be a forum supporter at other agrarian forums and I don't do it, but if the price was reasonable I would just to help support the "cause"....
So, please don't price me out of my ability to help, we all need seed and tractor money left to do this stuff, and I don't want to have to choose.
Also good info for those pie people out there....if you give pie you are not buying pie for a person you are giving away your own pie.....Just some pie economics, so decide if you are a pie liberal or a pie conservitive! Hahahahahaha
I gave away my only pie.......the teachers always said I was slow! Hahahahahaha
paul wheaton wrote:I am not certain but I think you need to have at least one whole piece of pie to be able to give it away.

Looks like you can give away a single slice of pie! Having said that, I'll try to remember to give mine away before it gets expired, but I want to taste and enjoy the delicious benefits for a while! (The main benefit I've enjoyed is that I can block the ads. The ads don't normally bother me, but for the last two days, random threads have resulted in my browser continually loading the page. This causes me to not read any page that won't stop loading, because I have limited monthly internet. I don't know if this is due to my ad-blocker or what, but it's gone now that the ads are off.)
I am talking to devaka about the idea of buying back pie.
Suppose folks buy oodles of pie and then give it to evan for pictures they like. And then, in time, evan has many pies. Then I could give evan $100 for all of his pie.
Not implemented yet, but I think it could be a way to encourage folks to post a lot to permies. And to have a strong influence on what is posted.
Pie fight! I got 2 pieces chucked at me, thanks Chadwick & Penny. OK instead of throwing them around I'm going to find a couple of great posts this weekend from no-pie people and pie them, get some in circulation so people get used to seeing it. Paul, Devaka, great idea hope you sell loads, fantastic way to support & show appreciation for the work behind the site, appreciation for other people's posts, and get some extra inner circle benefits for the pie buyer/recipient too.
