This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Community.

In this Badge Bit, you will setup a cider pressing party!

2018 Gleaner Cider Pressing Party


This BB has a point range from 1/2 to 6 points:
  - 3-4 people = ½ point
  - 5 people = 1 point
  - 1 point for every additional person
  - you do not count towards the number of attendees
  - maximum of 6 points

The minimum requirements for this BB are:
 - the working participants must be there for at least a 2 hour period
 - At least 4 gallons of cider
 - Any number of participants can bring apples and take cider
 - Photo of workers on the assembly line
 - minimum of at least 3-4 people helping

To document this Badge Bit, provide proof of the following as pictures or a video (<2 mins):
- conducting outreach about the cider pressing party
- show people at the assembly line
- show the cider made during the cider pressing party
- people at the cider pressing party during the beginning, middle, and end of the party

I think I knocked this one out yesterday.  Had some friends and new acquaintances over to make cider.  We started with around 800 lbs of apples, half foraged.  The crew assembled around 9:30 and we didn't get done till about 5.  We made around 42 gallons of cider (phew).  

Since it was just friends, word of mouth and texts were all the outreach needed.  There were 9 of us there so I think that counts for 4 points.

2023 Cider Pressing Party

Saturday we picked apples - doesn't count here

Sunday we pressed apples
Myself: 5hrs 3pm-8pm
Carlin: 5hrs 3pm-8pm
Cat: 3hrs 4pm-7pm
Jim: 3hrs 4pm-7pm
Total: 7 people put in 16 work hours

Removed the cores, and ground the best for apple butter.  Gallons of ground apples are tucked in the freezer to cook down this winter.

The cores and 'just bruised' apples went thru the grinder and were pressed for juice. Several gallons are set up to ferment into hard cider and apple cider vinegar.  Several gallons in the fridge for drinking.

Yuckies were hauled to the compost bin.

The pressed pomace is filled with seeds. It was spread on a sheet of metal sun dry entirely and will go to a permie determined to get anything to grow in the high desert.

This was a lot of work, but so much fun. Chatting with friends while being productive, enough to share out.

Start turning the handle, juice will come out fast at first
As the handle starts turning, the juice will come out fast the first few minutes. When it slowed, we could turn the crank and wait for a few minutes to get every last drop.

The pomace from a full press is about an inch thick.
2gal of crushed apples squishes down to an inch of pomace and is quite dry.

You have shown Cat and Jim twice.  You name four people but say seven were there for a total of 16 hours.  It is a cider party.  We need to see more than two people and bits of limbs.You need to show 4 Gal of cider
Check the BB points.  You need to show the actual people at the party.  Minimum number for this BB is three. It may be better to start the BB next season unless you have actual pictures of at least two more people other than you and the finished cider bottled.

I harvested over 150lbs of the most delicious apples at my friends farm which was perfect for organizing an apple pressing party! Unfortunately, in awaiting the last person to arrive to the party, I totally forgot to take a group start photo so I'm relying on the ring cameras set up at my house. I had 7 attendees (not including myself) so I count 3 points.

The latest arrival time was at 2:02p and the earliest (documented) departure time was 4:12p = just over 2hrs

We collectively produced 4.25 gallons of juice!
