Hi everyone!

Our awesome programmers have added some spiffy new things to our site, in honor of "JForum Day" (over on Code Ranch, Jforum day marks the anniversary of when they switched to Jforum software). What this means for us is that we all benefit from their celebrations. Our new features:

  • New Profile: We now have a spiffy new profile, with the ability to see a person's recent posts on the side of their profile, as well as the ability to add a profile picture and cover picture. I'll be posting a how-to pretty soon about that, in case you're as confused about it as I was!

  • Scavenger Hunt: Also on our new profile page, is a scavenger hunt! This is a fun way to learn about all the spiffy things we can do on our forums. There's scavenger hunts for every level, even Steward have one, though their's is top secret ;)

  • Pioneer Title: Speaking of the scavenger hunt, it introduces a new title called "Pioneer" (think "pioneer species"--those plants that are the first to grow in a disturbed soil). This is a title any one can earn! We hope to have it automated that, when someone completes the Pioneer Scavenger Hunt, Gir Bot awards them the shiny new title of "Pioneer"!

  • If you have any questions, or find any bugs, please post about it on this thread. And, happy Jforum day!

    I like the new look...

...and posted my 'bug' in the wrong place at the same time Nicole posted this so am reposting it here.
It appears that my 'likes' given and 'likes' received are reversed.

I'm a little ashamed to admit I just now learned that I can click on a user name in a post and learn about other permies. Heh!

Peeking at a few other profiles to check, it appears that 'likes' given and 'likes' received are reversed on more than just mine (reported in a post above).

    Hi all.

So I have just finished the Pioneer scavenger hunt, or at least I should have. I have everything checked off, but it wouldn't check off the last two, even when I made two new posts just to qualify for them (I am surprised that, as with most of the other items, they weren't already checked off sometime long ago).

    Have I done something wrong?

We've only just started tracking them so most of us will unchecked boxes for things that we've done dozens of times already.  Don't worry about it.

Your profile is showing two items not checked - Create a post with an image and Create a post with a youtube or vimeo video  Are you certain you've done those two things recently?  Can you try again, maybe even if this thread, so we can see if things are working or broken?

And here's the youtube link, from Ben Falk.

I am not worried. I just noticed I had a couple left, and in the OP, we were asked to report any issues so you guys could see to them.

Thanks for this, incidentally. I already look forward to my time spent on this site, but this is a fun idea.

Yeah, I noticed that my images and videos that I'd attached/added weren't showing up, either. Must be some sort of glitch in the matrix.

And, thank you so much, Chris Kott, for trying to complete the Scavenger Hunt. I was actually going to moosage you and see if you could do it, since you were only a few checks away. But, you went completed it before I even got the chance!

Thanks for testing the new feature, and reporting bugs!

I really like the new profile page, thanks.

So I never watch you tube and just found out today that you can make them do "Closed Captions".  I have to be real careful about what I watch as I don't want to use up all our data (I hope this is the right word).

So I don't know how to post a YouTube video on Permies so I found this thread to share in case I not the only one:

    https://permies.com/t/30463/post-YouTube-video-Permies

I will try this in a few days so I can complete the Pioneer Scavenger Hunt.

Thanks everyone for making Permies better and better ...

lol thanks, I do not have to look for this you said elsewhere, and wanted to quote! You brought it to me all fresh...
I clicked "report", for your post above, and did not report it as it gave me this:

So any news about the last two items on the scavenger hunt? They still don't show as complete, although as you can see above, I have completed them.

Is there a next stage of scavenger hunt once we complete the pioneer stage?

We've let the programmers know, but I know they're busy (and they're all volunteers!). Also, sometimes fixes of this nature have to wait until the next software update, and I totally don't understand all that's involved in that! They'll hopefully be able to get our Pioneer title operational, too, at the same time.

There's scavenger hunts for every title--so one for Pioneers, Pollinators, Gardeners, and Stewards. I'm pretty sure the Pollinator scavenger hunt isn't available unless one is a Pollinator. Pioneer is the only hunt available to someone BEFORE they get the title. So, a new person has no title. Once they complete the Pioneer scavenger hunt, they should be automatically turned into Pioneers. If they become Pollinators, then they have the Pollinator scavenger hunt to do if they want. Finishing the Pollinator scavenger hunt does not result in an automatic upgrade to Gardener. Does that make sense?

Yes, thanks. It's not a big deal. I just figured whoever went to so much trouble would want to see the result.

It was fun, anyhow, though I had unknowingly completed most of it beforehand.

    Thanks again.

While we're on the subject of troubleshooting, I've given away a slice of pie and also been given pie, but my counter says 0/1. Granted these weren't recent as the creation of this thread, they were a little ways back. I do notice some other fields are filled with things that go back since I became a member, like total apples and total posts.

Also, I just noticed that our lovely programmers added in the feature that: if you hover your mouse over a checkmark, it shows you from when it started tallying for that check mark. Some are "from the dawn of time" and some started counting this month (January).

My last one has only just been checked off, and it did it when I started a new thread with a video in the first post.

Can you try that and tell us what happens?  Maybe it's only recognising the first post in a thread.  Maybe stick an image in it too so we can try both things at once.

And I think there might be a whole load of 'levels' to this to keep everyone checking out all the features of the site.

I don't know if this helps, but I made a thread for testing stuff, posting profile/cover pictures to link to, and generally doing things to complete (and test) the scavenger hunt.

    It's here: https://permies.com/t/74446/Scavenger-Hunt-Testing-Add-Profile

I have been watching some members profile's to see if anyone has gotten the Pioneer Scavenger Hunt completed for the "attach a video".  I haven't seen any completed yet I know some have completed this task.  I have so I am waiting patiently  for our programmer to fix this before I start on the Pollinator Scavenger Hunt.

I was surprised at how easy it was to attach a video.  I had more problems with my slow computer not letting me watch the video.  I didn't want to attach a video I hadn't seen.

First and foremost, thanks for the pie, James.

Secondly, I made a test post on a new thread in the Tinkering forum, and posted both an image and linked to a YouTube video. It didn't work. Just thought you guys might like to know.

And thanks for all the effort. We might need an Unsung Heroes of Permies thread to document the work that is done to keep this site amazing. Without that volunteer effort, we wouldn't have such an amazing place to be at home in.

Just to make sure I understand the scavenger hunt, this is just a fun way of learning all of the cool features of this site and challenging yourself to complete the list. Right? This has nothing really to do with awarding titles, except a member without a title may become a Pioneer upon completing the requirements for Pioneer level. It is not a direct way of a Pioneer becoming a Pollinator, or a Pollinator to become a Gardener, etc. Is that correct?

Assuming I'm understanding the premise here and once the kinks get worked out, I think this will be a fun personal challenge.

Yes! The only promotion that will automatically happen when completing a scavenger hunt is the one for Pioneer (we need to get that title up and running somehow!). The other scavenger hunts are fun ways to learn forum tools.

I still haven't had the last two on the pioneer scavenger hunt recognised. Any idea on a timeline?

I checked in my profile, and it seems that they're showing up on my scavenger hunt. Maybe there's something wonky in the non-titled scavenger hunt? Could you try posting an image and a video for me? Thanks!

I miss the old days when I would think up a sinister scheme for world domination and you would show a little emotional support. So just look at this tiny ad:
