In January, we got a spiffy scavenger hunt added to our forum. Writing reviews, making posts, posting pictures and videos, etc, all are things to "check off" on the scavenger hunt. Aaaaaand, those that complete the Scavenger Hunt get the shiny title of "Pioneer." The title is just for fun and to show everyone how awesome you are. (If you're already a Pollinator, you don't get the Pioneer title, though. One title per person!)

Initially, this title was intended to be given out automatically when someone completed the scavenger hunt....but that bit of programming was a bit more complicated that we thought. BUT, I was told I could just give the title manually. So I made it, and it's operational. All you have to do is tell me that you've completed the e scavenger hunt. I'll double-check to see it's finished, and dub thee also with the Shiny Sword of Pioneering!

And, three cheers for Greg Harness, our very first Pioneer...and the one that reminded me to see if I could get this title operational. Thanks, Greg!

Niiiice!! And congrats Greg!

That sure is a shiny sword. Rather nice actually. Is there an equally sparkly, shiny rake of gardening?

Alas, I could not find a shiny rake fit for a Gardener. I did, however, find this shovel. It's not as shiny, but looks like a formidable weapon for smiting spam. I am having it delivered to you now...

I laughed out loud when I read that and saw the viking guy in the helmet delivering that shovel

I have had a lot of fun completing the scavengers hunts.  I'm stumped on a couple of the new ones though maybe after I have had my new title longer I will be able to figure them out.  Like, I read up on how to embed a video and did what the thread I found said though it did not work. I am looking forward to doing more reviews.

Yes I remember completing it.... and then there was some sort of computer "rock in the way" something that shows up when the tide is low, and was not expected before!

Hi. I prefer being a Pollinator over a Pioneer. I did not do a scavenger hunt on purpose, but it seems I did

There appear to be some kinks were working out in our Pioneer title. Right now, if you look at my title, it has Pioneer AND Master Steward. For some Pollinators didn't get the Pioneer title added, and I don't know if non-pollinators got the title awarded to them, because I only know of one that has completed the scavenger hunt, and I already manually gave him a title.

We're trying to figure out if we want the pioneer title to be in addition to the normal titles, or not. The automation of awarding it seems to have made it in addition...but only for staff. Needless to say, there's some kinks to work out!

Right now, all it means is that you completed the scavenger hunt on your profile. We're not planning on taking away anyone's pollinator/gardener/steward titles to replace them with Pioneer, so no worries there!

The pioneer title thing will be sorted out soon.

Is the rest of the scavenger hunt stuff working correctly?

Is everything in the scavenger hunt working correctly?

I know that the staff is currently talking about bringing in new staff and a big thing that pops up is "but they haven't completed any scavenger hunts"  "well, they could still be good staff" "maybe, but it does seem like a big part of being staff is knowing how to use the site.  Plus, how are they going to know how to use the new tools if there's a bunch of stuff on the site they haven't even used once."

Plus, the software was updated about eight months ago so that the moment somebody agrees to be on staff, they are then given access to a new scavenger hunt (a quick list of new staff tools).   Once they complete this scavenger hunt, their title is automatically updated to "gardener".  The new scavenger hunt should take less than an hour.  But you cannot do the new scavenger hunt until you have completed all of the other scavenger hunts.  That might take a while.

This sounds like a cool thing I'd love to do, but is there a list of things to "scavenge" for?
I must say I'm pretty null when it comes to posting videos or even pictures, for example. I have an android with which I can take pictures or videos, and I think there is a "share" button I can click... and that is where my talent ends. I've never learned how to post this kind of things I wish I knew how to do these cool things but...?
Staff note (Jordan Holland) :

You may have to switch to desktop view, but the scavenger hunt is located on your "home page" when you click on your name on any post you have made. Just scroll down and it's in the left column. It looks like you've already completed quite a bit!

I'm not sure the bot is working right for some of these things. "Create a post with a youtube or vimeo video (4/1)"

Nope. I have watched and commented on posts with videos, but I don't have a clue how to post one! I can find out how when I need to, like to verify a Badge Bit, that's not the point of my post. Just to say - is the friendly bot counting posts differently to me?

Edited to add - thank you Jordan for the how-to on Cécile's post!

It could be that you've quoted someone else's post that had a video embedded in it? Gir Bot would count that as you embedding the video.

That's what I think is happening, yes. I'll have to figure out how to actually embed a video so I don't have those points under false pretences!

I will second Jane's observation that things seem a bit off on the scavenger hunt with regards to posting a YouTube or Vimeo embedded link.  It looks like I'm credited with something like 64 of them.  In truth I've only done 2 I believe, both fairly recently.  I know I had to figure out how to do it for my first one getting a BB for cleaning out my RMH I believe, or maybe it was starting a fire in one.  I forget exactly what.  Anyway, the other came from I don't know where and I certainly didn't know what I was doing, which would seem to matter since I take it that's a main point of these scavenger hunts.  Anyway it might be worth figuring out what is crediting them and tweaking it if possible.

I suppose I should see about finishing the last two easy things on my first hunt...

This post is a test to see if my bumper stickers are showing up when I make a new post.

edited to note:  Interesting that it said I could pick 11 of them but that never worked so I reduced my selection to 6 and it worked fine.
edited to further note: after that I went back and upped the number selected to 11 and it worked.

There seems to be a bug in the site that prevented choosing 11 for me too, but it allowed me to choose 10, save that, then go back in and add one more.

Here are some threads about scavenger hunts and bumper stickers that new users might find helpful.

I am not sure how bumper stickers are given out. A new user may get 3 or 4, then when they earn apples they get more. With PIE (and apples) a user gets 11.

Uploading pictures, animating drawings and other similar skills is not part of my skills set, unfortunately.  However, I do so love my fellow permies and the Gir bot I wish I could give them all tacos for their hard work. [I'd help if I knew how.]

Hey Everyone,

In case you are wondering where your scavenger hunt details are, you can find them under the "View Profile" tab.  Just scroll down and your current status is shown at the bottom of the page on the left hand side.

I've been sent here by the lovely gir bot (thanks for the encouragement, gir bot) and I see the only thing I have left to do to complete my first scavenger hunt is to upload a video from youtube.

So here goes....

This is one of my favourites. If you haven't seen it and need a beautiful half an hour, I highly recommend that this fable called The Man Who Planted Trees.

Enjoy. x

I do not know how the 'system' works but I did some quick background research on your posts and indeed see at least four good youtube videos. I'll putter around and see if I can find any information for you. That or if a staff member who is versed in forum mechanics steps in.

Hi Timothy,
I keep getting invites to do the scavanger hunt,  could you do what you did for J Garlits, for me?  I have my one youtube video  posted here (https://permies.com/t/239519/Trees-Graziers#2220705 ) but my profile is showing 0 youtube videos linked.

Thank you.

That is strange Jeff, I have something I'd like you to try because I'm not 100% sure if it will trigger it or not.

Can you use the Post Reply function and then utilize the 'Youtube' button at the top? It will ask for the youtube link so you paste that in. Try posting that and see if it triggers the hunt to complete please.

Scavenger hunting a bit so I'll repost a video I shared 10 years ago since the algorithm doesn't seem to be picking it up...
