This is a free event to anybody that has been to wheaton labs before.
if you have never been to wheaton labs before, simply pay the $100.00 gapper fee and you're in!

This will be our first ever PEP1 certification course.  I think that in the future, the price of the two week course will be similar to a two week PDC:  about $900 to $2000.   But for this very first time, we are still getting a lot of bits and bobs sorted out.  The teachers will not be getting paid to teach, and there might be a few projects where a student knows more than the teachers!

May 20th 2019- June 1st 2019
Wheaton Labs near Missoula, Montana
Free or $100
This event is limited to 12 students and 6 boots (from our permaculture bootcamp).

To get PEP1 certified, you must complete 16 PEP sand badges.  As an example, here are four of the PEP sand badges:

I think that in many ways, this will be the true birth of PEP1.

Three years from now, I hope that we will offer three PEP1 courses each year, and folks will pay something like $1800 for the two week course.   Maybe three years after that, there will be 20 places that will offer PEP1 courses and maybe a few that will do something PEX1 that is not PEP1.

Hopefully, at the end of this course, most of the students will end up with a PEP1 certification.   And the few that don't will have just a few tiny things they can do at home to finish up.

Along the way, we should be able to refine the requirements for PEP1.  And each badge.  And each BB.

Basic food staples will be provided.  But the students will need to cook for themselves and clean up after themselves.

Would this be appropriate for someone who is new-ish to permaculture and hasn't done a PDC or anything? Or would a certain skill level be assumed/helpful?

Hi Erica, I'm pretty sure that this would assume no prior experience. Paul can correct me if I'm wrong.

I just paid to register for the PEP1 Certification and gathering in May/June 2019. I wanted to make sure I get a spot at the event. (and if being staff excludes the fee for this event, then, early Merry Christmas, Paul! )

Erica,

PEP1 is designed mostly for first timers.  And I suspect that a lot of folks that already have a fair bit of this experience will get certified remotely.  So the people that will typically come to PEP1 will be people with extremely little experience.  People that have never held an ax, or held a hammer.

For the BB about firewood - there has been some stark contrast between people that have come here and attempted to put up some firewood, and the people that have delivered some firewood.  And I think the only real difference is: getting the actual experience.   Drop the tree.  Limb it.  Buck it up (to the correct length!) and stack it (it does not stack well if you did a poor job limbing or cutting it to the proper length).

On this particular PEP1, I am hopeful that some people with some experience will come out - and help us shape it a bit.    That's why this event is free (or $100) instead of $2000.   We're still shaping out some of the particulars.

Well, I registered (or paid my gapper fee) and I would be the IDEAL candidate, if you're looking for folks who have never held an axe. If you need my space, though, for your first-time target group, I'm good with giving way. Thanks!

Paul,

Although I would love to go and learn tons of information, alas, I will pass on this great offer.  I am a bit older, and frankly, more tired than the youngsters that need to learn from the masters of information!
Good luck on this great venture.  I wish you well and a very Merry Christmas!

Have you heard from our peeps yet?

I think we need a few people that have never held an ax.

More importantly, we need people to be all signed up now, so we can do planning around a full event.  So your presence is better than somebody that signs up as #13, but already has a lot of skills.

Thanks, it sounds awesome. I paid the gapper fee. I have some experience holding a hammer (Habitat for Humanity) but I'd LOVE hands-on permaculture experience. I am an experiential learner (I guess most people are) and I can read things for hours on the internet or in books, watch YouTube videos, attend lectures, etc, and not retain much if at all.

I have a small self-contained truck camper, will I be allowed to bring it with my dog (she would stay in the camper most of the time except to be taken out to potty on leash)?

camper thing is fine - we've had a lot of that here before.

As for the dogs, I wrote this just now:

I'm still a little unclear about what will be happening at the workshop.  Will the participants choose which 16 badges they want to work on, or is there a schedule where everyone works on the same thing at the same time? Will there be instructors for all 22 categories?

I am also unclear.   Which is why this is a free event (with food!) and not a $2500 event.

I think everybody gets to pick their own 16 badges.  And I think most of the students will have knocked out a few BBs before they arrive.   And a few students will need to knock out a few more after they leave.   I suspect fred will lead most of the stuff.   i will lead some.  Jocelyn will lead some.  coco will lead some.  Some of the boots will lead some.  Some of the other attendees will lead some.

This is the first attempt.  I think we will learn a lot about how to make it work.

For now, I am hyper focused on getting the badges defined so that we can have 22 sand badges to choose from!

From an e-mail:

Will the last day, Saturday, June 1, be a full day?

In the OP, the daily schedule is:

7:00am - Everybody starts making breakfast.
7:50am - Everybody has eaten and cleaned up.
  8:00am - class begins
  Noon - Everybody makes lunch.
12:50pm - Everybody has eaten and cleaned up.
  1:00pm - class
5:00pm - Everybody starts making dinner.

I don't know if we know yet what Saturday will be. Though I imagine there could be a scramble to finish projects, which I think might mean a full day.

Hi there. I’m very interested in your PEP1 event coming up in May, sounds like a great opportunity to learn some new skills and dive deeper into the permaculture lifestyle.  My question to you is this, can I bring my 12-year-old son with?  I have no problem signing him up although I am not sure whether he will be completing all of the requirements for the PEP1 certificate (?) I have no doubt that physically he can handle it - he is 5’7 right now and has been gardening/landscaping with me since he could walk. Cut down his first tree with an axe around 6-7 yrs of age. We homeschool and although permaculture is more my interest than his, I think it is an important subject for his education. If it is ok and there are still openings I will sign us up today.
Thanks!

I just sent in my registration email to officially claim a spot!  Yay, my first visit to the lab!   I have some questions and figured it would be better to post them here so other visitors can learn from the answers.

I'd be flying and I presume Missoula is the closest airport?

Airfare is crazy cheap if I arrive at 9:14pm on the 18th (a bit early) and depart at 5:25am on the 2nd.  Can I get rides at those crazy hours?  I believe there's a normal payment for getting driven around which I'm happy to pay.

By coming early, I hope that I would be able to help in some way to prepare for the event.  Maybe pretend to be a boot for the day.  Not sure but something to be useful.

I can pack some camping gear but not much on a plane.  What are the lodging options?

Once I hear that it's ok to come a day early and land/depart at those hours I'll book the flight.  Thanks!!!

Rides to and from the airport or bus station is $15 for "reasonable hours" and $35 for after 9pm and before 8am.

At this time we encourage people to come early and stay late.  That policy might change.   Be we also expect you to be largely self propelled and self cleaning.

I guess we have had some people come early and it was awesome!   They settled in without much direction and then they started finding ways to help without distracting everybody else.

And we have some people come early and it was a disaster.   They seemed determined to prevent everybody else from doing stuff and they made lots of messes that other people spent time cleaning up.

I can pack some camping gear but not much on a plane.  What are the lodging options?

We have tent + sleeping bag + sleeping pad combos for rent.

We also have bunks for rent - first come first serve.

Mike, you are permies.com staff, so you don't need to pay the $100.

Hello all,

I am really looking forward to this PEP1 course in May; I recently registered and figured I should put myself on the map. I have more experience than the average person when it comes to operating hand and power tools including a chainsaw and ax. I also have a good foundational knowledge of plant/seed identification and soil type from my younger years of competing in agronomy/horticulture through the FFA. I've always had a passion for foraging and cooking; recently i've been trying my hand at mostly vegan meals. So there it is. I look forward to meeting y'all and welcome any correspondence on any topic. Cheers.

Welcome to the forums, Logan! And we'll be happy to see you here in May!

I wear many different hats and am filling in when I can with getting registration forms and more info out to folks. So there could be minor delays in that department.

Wow, I'm really excited about this. While I have a certain range of skills (perhaps similar to Logan), there are areas where my theoretical knowledge exceeds my practical skill by at least an order of magnitude.  This seems like potentially an ideal way to begin the make up for that gap.

Also, I've been trekking with the development of PEX, and I see the huge potential.  It would be really cool to invest some time and energy into its development.

I need to work out a couple home, family, and farm-care things before I register and pay the gapper fee.  Just wanted to drop a note in here in the meantime.

Hello everybody,

I'm really excited about this event and will serendipitously be in Montana in May coming from Texas. I was just wondering, as I've never been to Wheaton Labs and am very new to permies, do I just need to pay the $100 fee to secure a spot or is there any type of application?

Thanks so much and looking forward to the workshop!

Yup, if you've never been here before, you do need to part with $100 to get set up.  But the good news is that once you have done that, you can come for other stuff too.
