This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Dimensional Lumber Woodworking.

Let's make a sign!  They're cool!
Signs at the lab

Funny signs

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
 - At least 5" tall by 18" wide
 - Some means of hanging or posting the sign
 - No treated wood
 - Lettering and images are burned
 - Must finish with tung oil or linseed oil (or else the burned image disappears)

To document your completion of the BB, provide pics or video (<2 min) of the following:
 - The wood and your burning tools
 - The sign getting burned
 - The sign getting oiled (showing type of oil)
 - The sign meeting the minimum size
 - The sign hanging or posted

Clarifications:
 - No plywood, OSB or particle board - use dimensional lumber

I don't think I have the tools to burn it, but what if I made the sign, carved the letters, and stained the letter with a stain made from rusty nails? I don't have tong or lineseed oil--I oil my tools with coconut oil mixed with beeswax. Could I oil with that instead?

I'd imagine (could be wrong here) that a big nail, held with pliers, heated in a small fire could be used to burn letters.  The bigger the nail/spike/screwdriver/bar, the longer it would hold heat.

The wood burning kits are mighty cheap.

I think that the coconut oil would not polymerize so that the char would be held onto the wood.   But I would like to see some experiments done and take a look at the samples three years later.

I did, indeed, get a woodburner! First I made a sign for my kids' Tree Fort House

But, I forgot to take a picture of me oiling it

So, I made sure to take a picture of oiling the sign for Huckleberry Book Nook, which is part of the Tree Fort House complex.

Before oiling

During oiling

And then installed with eyehooks and string so I could move it as the kids desired--and the did so desire to move it, a lot!

Staff note (Mike Haasl) :

I hereby certify Nicole completed this BB.

Thank you! The signs have been really fun to make! I'm really excited about the sign post I'm working on. The snow will have to melt before I can install it, though! (All of the signs are for places on my map https://permies.com/wiki/101705/PEP-BB-community-sand-map#839152).

When we were naming the duck yard, my husband suggested Duck Land, because it reminded him of Mario and how all the levels in the game are called "_____ Land". So, Duck Land sign has an egg popping out of the box instead of a coin, and also has a little mushroom for the ducks to grow bigger :D
