I've recently started making pigments and watercolors from the stones and plants that grow right around the house. These two kestrels were done using only colors made with locally sourced materials. Except for the black. For the first one, I used prismacolor black pencil, but the second one is a watercolor paint I made from the gray paint by adding charcoal to it. The yellow from elderberry leaves, russet from sandstone, and the gray is from black-eyed susan flowers and leaves. When I get back home from a trip I'm on right now, I'm going to do more. I'd only just started it the week before I left, but I'll be home next week and can't wait to get started. My blog is wildozarkblog. The post about my trip here to Doha, Qatar is where this pic is posted, if you want to read about that. webpage

Since retiring I have been able to devote somewhat full time to my art - of course there is still 'growies' and cycling - so I'm not sure what full time means.

But I love that there is an art forum here at permies and I am in awe of the posts here - some truly beautiful work.

So here is one of my favorites.  The Age of Innocence was inspired by two children playing at a local farmers market.  In this world of data, plastics, ipods games and tablets......these two children were completely fascinated with the rocks and dirt and leaves.  They were totally unaware that a large group had formed around them and were taking pictures of them.

This is my latest kestrel. All of the color came from my own paints that I make from local stones and clay. If you’re interested in the paint, I have them listed at my website (www.wildozark.com). They’re called “Paleo Paints” 😁 The painting is sold.

I am very interested in your paints.  When I was in Cuba recently a children's art program was teaching a technique of painting that used clay, coffee, and dirt.  The paintings were beautiful.

I like the idea of using the found, recycled, and less toxic resources around me to create art.  I currently have a studio full of oil paints and acrylics but eventually I would like to transition completely to all natural and recycled products.

Jeanine, right now I only make watercolor but by the end of the year I’ll have the pigments themselves to offer. You can make any kind of paint then. If you’d like to make them yourself I have a how-to at my blog, that starts with the rocks. I’m on my phone so can’t easily get the link to share it but I’ll try to come back later. I’m absolutely in love with these paints and the process of making them.

Alright! Back to a computer and not tiny cell phone screen :) Here's a link to the how-to that will give you an idea of the steps involved in turning a rock into paint: https://www.wildozark.com/handmade-watercolor-paint/. Once you have your pigment, you can make any kind of paint you want. To make oils, you'd use your oil base on the mulling board and muller. You'd need some of the tiny containers or some tubes for storing it, so in that way it's a little less convenient than watercolors, which can be allowed to dry out in any container at all, with or without a lid.

The current paint experiments I'm doing include a nice tan made from the red autumn leaves of black gum, and I just finished putting to pan some shades I separated out from a pigment rich pink sandstone. I don't have anything about those posted at the blog yet, but as soon as I get caught up with some other projects, I'm going to focus on the paints, paint-making, and painting. I'm out until late November with prior commitments, so it'll be end of year before I really kick into production with it.

There's a good-sized community of pigment hunters and handmade watercolor makers on Instagram, but I'd love to have a topic here for it. Will have to see how to do that and see if anyone else is interested in sharing and learning secrets of the stones together.

Madison, the 'Dyeing' forum has some bits and pieces  https://permies.com/f/242/dyeing  Maybe you could start a topic there?

I would love to learn more, esp. for use in inks and block printing.

Judy, and anyone else interested, I started a topic in the art forum on making/using local pigments for paint:

I hope we have some interest in this!

Wow, I love Tyler Ludens' biological illustration embroidery! Identifying the exact species, and portraying them almost as if in a field guide. (The fossil fish, incidentally, is Knightia.) I love it because it shows an appreciation for all the beings of nature, not just the ones considered conventionally beautiful -- a lot of people would not find the stag beetle, for instance, beautiful. On that note, here is one of my pen-and-ink drawings:

This is some of my knitted and crocheted work. I will be giving these to my friends, because I knit and crochet to relax, and I end up with more stuff made than I could use myself.

Here's the latest two paintings using my handmade watercolors (Ozark pigments). The Queen of Cups is a Queen Anne's Lace flower, one of the cards in a tarot deck I'm working on. Goshawk No. 1 is the first in a series of 2 planned goshawk paintings.
