Greetings Permies staff. I have a site tinkering question -- sometimes kickstarter bundles have items I'm interested in included amongst them, but I have never backed a kickstarter because I don't want a green K under my name when I post on the forums -- I would prefer this information be private.

Is there a way to contribute to the kickstarter without getting a green K icon in your user info?

I may be an edge case here, but perhaps others feel similarly. Thought I'd bring it up for discussion.

Hi M, thanks for the great question - although I don't know the answer to your specific query, I think you could go ahead and back kickstarter using a different email to the one you have registered on permies, and that should mean that you wouldn't get the green K next to your name. So if you have a convenient alternative email address to use, that could be one way of doing this. I hope that maybe helped a little! And I'm sure someone cleverer than me will answer your actual question a bit later
Staff note (Jules Silverlock) :

Sorry for giving the wrong info here - please see Paul's post below for clarity and looks like the original post has prompted a feature update, so thanks for helping us all out!

If you use a different email address at kickstarter, then you won't get your goodies.

Jules, take a look at your "edit profile" stuff.  See if there is an option to turn off the "K".  I think we thought ahead on this, but I can't remember for sure.  And since I don't have a "K" on my account, I can't go into my stuff and look.

Do you see a way to turn it off?

I swear I have seen that option, but I can't find it at the moment.  Perhaps another volunteer staff can illuminate us?

You can now hide the kickstarter icon from the "edit profile" screen.

Click your name at the top right corner, go to "edit profile", and click "privacy settings"

Or, here is a direct link:
https://permies.com/forums/user/edit#change-privacy-settings

Select "Hide the kickstarter icon next to my name" and click "Save changes"

This option doesn't seem to be live for me yet. Are other folks able to access it?

It's there for me, and seemingly working, judging by the absence of "K"

I think it makes sense that you have to have a K in order to hide a K.

Fair enough! Just wanted to make sure everything was working before jumping in.

Looks like the earlybird options are gone from the Kickstarter page, though, even though the timer on Permies hasn't run out.

Hmmm. I may be blind.

Devaka's link brings me to this screen, and I can't find privacy stuff under any of the headings.  I started out in mobile view, then switched to desktop to see if anything changed, but it didn't seem to.

What am I missing?

Yes, I am blind. I finally found privacy settings under email preferences. I still don't see the options you guys had screenshots of, though. Under the box with my (blacked out) primary email, it just has the save and back buttons.

Help cure my blindness!

I think the above screen shot is of the email preferences. If you did find privacy settings, that's where the "show my email address to other users" and the "Show my online status to other users" things are.

Privacy settings for me is in between Post Setting and Email settings.

I don't see it on your first pic.

But I will add that "Hide the K" checkbox isn't showing on the mobile view. I had to switch to desktop view to see it.

Those screenshots are all desktop view. When I open email preferences, I get a heading that says privacy settings, and then all the email stuff.

Hmm. Must be something to do with Brave. I just logged in using Firefox and it came up fine.

Brave vs Firefox. Firefox has the light background.

I've got email preferences open in Brave so you can see how the heading says privacy settings.

This is all desktop view.

Brave. Email preferences open. Privacy settings heading shows under email preferences.

So there seems to be three primary concerns:

- You don't see "hide k" option if you don't have k.
This however is by design. You have to have k in order to see the "hide k" option

- "hide k" option is not available in mobile view.
This will be fixed soon.

- Things in the edit profile section seems to be all messed up in the brave mobile browser.
I think we need more testing around the compatibility with the brave browser.
