First time working with the new Boots, and it was a full day. A classic "opener" for working with new Boots is to do some junkpole fence work. Jay and Shai went with me up to Allerton Abbey today and we were doing some patching and a couple full rebuilds. We don't want deer and wild turkeys plundering our Three Sisters, and there happened to be some major gaps to address today. Here's the "before" and "after" of what looked to be a frickin' barn door open. With a bit of elbow grease (and the Log Wizard...), we were able to patch this up just like new.

Also up at the Lab, here's another photo I'd grabbed from Sunday's hike. This area is actually a bit marshy at times, and the shreds of bark here show the flow of water down from the steeper, higher elevation where trees had been affected by fire in the past.

Finally: kitten update! Puff AKA Batman let her kitties come outside for the first time (we know of) just yesterday. I saw them for the first time myself just today, after dinner. Seems like Puff has a good handle on this "mother" thing.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day...!

Happy Taco Tuesday to you...!

Major shout-out to Moto Jeff, Liam, Drew, and J. Jay for literally extinguishing a roadside fire started by lightning during a tremendous thunderstorm this afternoon...! Admirable work, guys.

Meanwhile, before that thunderstorm we spent a lot of time outside today. I hiked around with these guys to assist prep for the proposed Sepp Holzer root cellar project.

Here's a note of a few trees that will be reclaimed for building materials. They're within a dense grove of trees and they'll provide a bit more challenge than usual when felling trees.

Finally: When wrapping up the hike, Guest Instructor JR and I uncovered a thoroughly-eaten tree trunk and stump nestled within the woods.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day...!

Wednesday: the middle of PDC Week 2. The participants are readying to present their designs to Paul, their mock client. Lots of extra time is being spent with the small groups discussing their implementation of water features and chickens. Looking forward to hearing more about their efforts, and I hope they take away quite a lot from the course.

I was up on a roof and/or climbing things today. I have a couple photographs of that.

Pictured here are Shai and Catherine (Drew was on this team, but stepped away when I was on the roof). They're plotting out and prepping the soil of the berm pictured here for a future full of blueberries.

Here's Moto Jeff, lunging forward to put a 3/8" cable within my grasp.

Finally: here's my mug about 20 feet up in the air, stringing stainless-steel cable.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day...!

Looking good! Tan! Have you seen any spotted lanternflies out there? We're being overrun with nymphs here near Loch Raven reservoir. Bill has discovered that the bigger they get, the slower they get.

The last weekday of the PDC streaks by like a flaming arrow. I'm building stuff with my fellow Boots at Wheaton Labs in the heat of the summer.

Liam, Shai and I were up at the new pump house at Basecamp today, helping install a water hydrant.

This afternoon, J. Jay, JR, and I went to JR's PTJ build site to clear a path for the excavator, and to fell and peel logs for the build. Here's a panoramic view of the build site in its current state.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day...!
