If it's "greywater friendly" when you're done with it, I'd say it's fine.

Washing dishes I do daily. I never had a dishwasher. Most days I wait until there's more to clean, but for this BB I did it in the morning (better light for photos)


Sorry, you only see a part of the dirty dishes (most of them is on the right of this picture). But here you see how I was and what I use.

Hi Inge,

Since this is routine for you, could you please post another round of you doing dishes by hand? The BB requirement is meant to be "fill a dishwasher" for the amount of dishes done. I think if you posted one more round of dishes I could certify this BB complete.

Is JR Watkins dish soap graywater friendly?  This link says is is but I don't know if I trust this link.  :)

Washing dishes.

Used about 2 gal of water between wash and rinse.

Had lots of hot water after doing canning. Perfect time to wash up while waiting for the canning to finish.

To me it looks like you would need to do one more load in order to fill a dishwasher. Otherwise it looks good.

Also based on the photo i do not see if your soap is greywater friendly soap (the soap usually says greywater safe or readily biodegradable
Do you have another photo of this showing it is greywater friendly?

Okay. Here I am again. I saved a lot more dirty dishes this time.


Dirty dishes are going to be washed


First load


Drying (with towel) and putting them where they belong immediately, so there's space for more


Start of the second load (yes, that's still the same water, nothing added)


Last item of the second load. Now I'll dry this too and put it in the cupboards.


And the water is still OK for cleaning the sink and countertop (imo)

I hope this will do to get the BB

I used a small amount of Ecover. It's in the first series of photos. I'll show that photo here again.

In the middle you see the dish-washing liquid. It says: "Ecover essential Natural perfume Lemon (and then words meaning Dish washing liquid) with plant-based and biodegradable ingredients."  
It writes on the bottle (at the back side):
"Over 35 years of green know-how and sustainable science goes into every bottle of Ecover, since we had the vision of a clearer clean back in 1979." That's the only English on it. Ingredients and other information are in Dutch, German and French. Difficult to translate. But it's all natural. The lemons for the perfume are organic.
I hope this is OK.

Washing dishes - take two.

Here's more dishes and a picture of the soap I used.

One problem with using so little water is that it cools off too much by the time I get to the end of the dishes. Normally, I would dump the water and start again with fresh hot water to finish the dishes.

Any suggestions on this? I had the water about as hot as I could stand it to start with. Although normally I also wouldn't have so many dishes before I would wash them so maybe I would finish before it cooled off so much.

Hi Penny, my tactic (ok, the missus' tactic) is to put the soap and warm water in one of the bigger bowls/pots that we're cleaning anyway.  Once that cools off or gets too gunky, we dump it and refill/reload.  So there might be a quart in each batch and we usually get through in 2-3 batches.  So the cleaning water never sits in the sink, it just stays in a bowl or pot.

It was hard to accumulate enough dishes without driving my mother completely insane, she hates a clutter.  The black pot was where I kept all my soapy water and I took great pains to minimize the rinse water, though I couldn't keep track of exactly how much I used.

We don't haved a dishwasher, and not much counter space for dishes to get too out of hand, which is great. I tend to leave used soapy water in the sink to wash dishes as they come up in the day, usually as soon as i drain it I find something to wash. I'm using Ecos brand dish soap.
