I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns.
When I first discovered these playing cards, which are true playing cards and hold up well to shuffling and dealing and have a nice coating, I was impressed. They really gave me an "around the world, mountain top view" of the most important people and topics in
permaculture and homesteading.
Not being familiar with the names and reputations of the giants of permaculture, buying this deck of cards gave me a quick education. What impressed me and
led to my giving them a 10 out of 10 is that Paul didn't include himself among the rest of the giants. Maybe I
should have deducted a point for that, because nobody has done more to push society toward permaculture becoming a household word than Paul. But though he often calls himself a giant doofus (and similar), he appears to be a humble doofus. And he could have included himself in the deck with little or no resistance from the growing "family" on Permies.
Besides the mini-biographies, there is a good assortment of permaculture methods, techniques, and topics. Some of them will work for you in the right part of the world, others will not. Some of them will work anywhere. Not everyone can raise livestock. Not everyone can put in a
hugelkultur. But everyone should know the names of those who have paved the way and gotten us to where we are today. The deck, for accomplishing that, gets a 10.
You can also think of the deck as a pack of flashcards. Keep them close at hand, study a couple of them each day, and within a month, you'll be conversant in perm-ese. ;)
