They are out sunning themselves today (as is my laundry ).
I tried to count and there are maybe roughly 2-3 dozen? ...probably more in the egg case and tucked back in the leaves though.

It's harder to find them lately and for a bit I thought baby garden spiders had invaded because they looked so dark and the pattern almost yellowish green...but the legs are starting to look like how I remember the moms...spotted and elongated.

Trying to post something that zooms in well to see these little ones so repetitive photos.
Try clicking on the photo for higher resolution and zoom in on the spider at the top of the leaf in the second picture.

Thank you Tina!
It's been fun and the first time I've had the opportunity to follow any wildlife this closely...along with having the time myself and a way to take photos it's become a routine.

Their group is getting smaller and smaller though and now I'm wondering if there will be only a mating pair or two left to winter over?

So far they don't show any signs of leaving the area where they hatched and the egg case and 'leaf house' are still there.

the two photos in the sun were taken a week ago...twenties at night and fifties during the day...they come out when the sun shines.

The snow picture is today!
Wondering if they are inside the egg case?

These photos are from a few days ago...since then we've had single digit temps and 6" of snow.

Looks like no ones left at home and the egg case has collapsed...

Two more pics today after our cold stretch, snow, ice and then a lot of rain.
I'm surprised at how well the elder leaves have held up and wonder if she had an instinct to choose leaves that would not fall off in the fall?

I've been looking for the young ones in the same area as last year and have not seen any.

Today, though, this one was out in the rain on a potted dahlia across the path from last years area

She is so hard to see on this leafy plant...she must have remembered growing up with cameras flashing since she did not budge at all

Body is about a half inch and very slim compared to my first view of mom last august.

Same dahlia plant but this spider seems like a different one? smaller and thinner....
Impossible to find them amidst the leaves except when out on top.

Last year the hazelnut and elder had more leaf color contrast and way more open space to see under the leaves also.

Tiny grasshoppers this year so this is like a miniature scene

Nothing exciting...I'm just trying to take photos when she's out.
Same plant and positioned in the same area if not the same leaf daily.

She is blending in very well with the lush foliage! I try looking for a green lynx spider too but it's hard to find. Oddly I don't see any yellow garden spider this year either, but I do see lots of jumping spiders and crab spiders.

If I had not known the area where they were last year I don't think I would have found her.  There may be more around that I don't run across although I don't know how territorial they are?

I love the crab and jumping spiders also!
And those big black and yellow garden spiders

I hadn't been able to find her for a few days so started looking at surrounding plants and there she was, posing

She must have discovered that the grasshoppers hang out on my red dahlia...
hers is the only flower with all of it's petals.

And it looks like the next generation is on it's way!

Haha...you are very welcome!

She has disappointed me though.
When I went to take some more pregnant spider poses this evening she had killed what I think might be one of those cute little jumping spiders

Well... she IS eating for two six hundred. I'd surely be hungry.

Tereza wrote:this is from a site at University of Florida:

Each egg sac contains 25 to 600 bright orange eggs, with an average of 200 eggs. Eggs require 11 to 16 days to hatch, depending on air temperature. Each egg transforms to a postembryo (incorrectly called a deutovum in some of the literature). The postembryo of the green lynx, like that of other spiders, is without tarsal claws and mouth parts, and the eyes are functionless. No setae or hairs are present on the body.

A short while later she had reversed the grasshopper to eat.

Twice earlier that day she was on the front of the flower but each time when I approached she quickly moved back behind a petal...she is fast!

I would have loved a photo of her green color against the red of the dahlia.

Now we aren't sure we want to eat the petals if there might be toxic spider spit?  Grasshopper chomps didn't bother me.....

Going on two weeks since we have seen her...the above post with her on a flower.

We both keep looking...she could be there on any of the plants in that area but the foliage is so thick it's hard to see under leaves.

She might have an egg case by now and we remember that last year her mom moved it around and ended up on a high branch of the elder.

Meanwhile grasshoppers are enjoying my dahlias....
