My kids have claimed a piece of firewood that looked like the Ice Palace that Elsa makes in the movie Frozen. My husband also snagged a piece of shiny maple because it was just too pretty to burn!

I’m frequently amazed at the beauty inside a chunk of firewood. I may have posted these to a different thread, I can’t remember. But this was a piece of firewood I had set aside and forgotten about, and then almost burned, but cut a slice off the end ‘just to see’, and it turned out to be one I had saved to make a jewelry box. I need to get better about labeling things!

Ahhhh... I’m embarrassed to show anyone my pile of ‘set asides’ because sometimes it looks bigger than the ‘use for firewood’ pile! I make other stuff besides spoons though, like key holders, picture frames and jewelry boxes. That spoon is amazingly beautiful Jordan! Trying to figure out what kind of wood it is. Looks like maybe hard maple or white oak? Saving it to my picture file for inspiration!

Thanks, it's funny you should ask...check out this thread https://permies.com/t/156286/md/Guess-type-wood-game where we covered it and other types of wood, and add your own if you like!

Here’s my badge bit submission. I had to switch knives in the middle as my Swiss Army knife blade broke!

You're almost there, John! Both mine and R Ranson's looked like that, and we just kept working at it to smooth it out and make it easier to handle. Here's a before/after of ours, in case it helps!

Here’s my spoon after smoothing it out and refining it. How about now?

Here's my first spoon! I drilled a hole near the bottom to put a string through.

Thanks for the feedback! I have continued whittling my spoon and I'd like to resubmit it.

Note: Sorry, it needs more bowl to be a spoon.  Try removing more from the inside of the bowl while leaving the outside alone.  Check these examples for some before (keep going!) and after pics:  https://permies.com/wiki/70/99344/pep-woodworking/Carve-timer-spoon-PEP-BB#1239366

I appreciate you taking the time to give me specific critiques! I've made the bowl of the spoon much bigger than before.
