I sharpened a hatchet. It might be hard to tell in the pictures, but it looked like someone had dropped the blade on concrete or something. After some time with a file and sharpening stone, it was sharp and back to chopping kindling.

More fun at Wheaton Labs!

As you can see there are a couple chips. The chips where not completely filed out to preserve the life of the blade.

Check it out!

Got out the old boy scout hatchet and took the nicks out of it.  Normally I'd do it roughly with an angle grinder but I figured I'd try the file method.  It worked!

I love sharp tools. My photos didn't turn out too well for the hatchet close-ups. I'd be happy to re-do if need be, there always seems to be a dull hatchet around Wheaton Labs with the rate that the crew uses them. Look at the chip towards the top (before pic and side 1 pic) of the blade for before and after reference, as well as towards the bottom of the blade in the after shot side 1.

Hatchet Sharpening.  It belongs to my mother and she asked that I don't make it "too" sharp but it still cuts paper without too much force.

I generally keep my blades sharp. Even so my hatchet picked up a few nicks.

I used a file and a stone.

Ernie & Erica's evening presentation on fire science made good watching for this.

[Edit: kept going, blade is now nick-free to my eyes]
