Through the magic of permies.com, we have a wonderful team of animation, illustration, editing and production folks that have signed on to help with the book.  The animators/illustrators are working on the video for the kickstarter as I type.  The script was hashed out in This Thread and we'll be sharing progress of their animation work.

Going from an idea, all the way to an animated video, is a very interesting project with spreadsheets, time stamps and lots of feedback.

Looks good, but the animated felled tree looks cut by chain saw, not axe.

We have the rough video!  

Bernal Brothers Studio

Once fully detailed and animated it will have motion and color like in the section with the guy watering the rock.

How's it look?  Is the message fairly clear?

At the 0:30 mark do people have an opinion on the unchanging color of the rock versus the flickering color of the guy's pants?  We have some say in which way we want to go (that level of flicker to create movement or less flicker to have less flicker).

0:12 more light bulbs and different sort of popping animation?

0:13  maybe mike starts off with just mike in a white void.   And then when "his land" is said, the land (with lots more trees) pops up to join him.

0:23 with the words "when he died" how about a portrait on the wall that says "RIP Mike Oehler"?

0:48 hugelkultur ...  a little taller ...  wood spread out more (and not touching) ...  soil around wood ...  top is food plants instead of grass.  remove "P" from gal's overalls.  Can the gal have the signature gloves?

0:54 oooooo!  I really like the imagery you came up with here!

1:03 maybe the first item could be "tool care" instead of "otis"?

1:07  can the gal be "the gal" - with the overalls and gloves?  But maybe a younger version?
 can the university be replaced with a gray box building with the word "college" at the top?

1:10  more homestead magnificence?

1:12  with each accomplishment, can their be a video game icon appearing at the top, complete with a "ba-ding!" sound?

1:40  remove the "P"?

1:56  maybe "the next levels" are shown with stuff being added in and sudden, big zoom outs?

2:00  can we show the guy actually whittling the spoon?

2:10 lots more people?  Maybe the same style of people as the other people in the animation?

2:19 I especially like the piece of pie on the table.

2:33 can we convey a text message that says "Printing is expensive!  Give us monies!"

I really liked the majority of it. I did find in the last frame that Paul has more hair detail than everyone else, but I think that could be easily remedied. Also, during the close-up of Paul, he became pixelated.

This is a super rough draft.  We just had a two hour long meeting with the animators to talk about lots of little details.   And they kept saying things like "see those books?  When they appear, they will drop down from the ceiling, one at a time, as an animation."   So everything in this is acting more as a placeholder to get a general idea.

They are VERY creative - and they are VERY permaculture savvy!  

I had the idea about the punch cards.  :)

Well that's excellent. I think this is already really amazing. I'm gobsmacked that this is the "super rough draft" and not the draft before you publish it.

Just watched the video and I like it and A few notes:

Have a name tag for Mike Oehler

In the end I wanted to know did Mike Oehler find someone to continue his work?

One question I had at the end of this is...
How did the people not measure up exactly?  Was it purely lacking skills or attitudes, just never met anybody they liked, etc.  Any examples?  Not just from Mike, but from the others Paul has spoken with about leaving their land to worthy people, etc.  Maybe I just missed it?  I know if I had the legacy of Mike, I probably would be looking for that perfect person and might never find them.  
I do think that having a verifiable list of accomplishments showing hard work and dedication would go a long way though.  This is an awesome idea!  Supposedly in the next 10 years, there is expected to be a massive  wealth transfer (some of it being land assets) with the baby boomer generation retiring or passing away, leaving farms and land to the next generation.  Maybe it will be some of us!  This might be a good kick starter selling point for this.

name tag:  i think we have an interesting way of doing that coming up.

one of the guys from my place was up there for just a couple of weeks before mike died.  Not enough time for mike to change his will.

I remember one time I went up to Mike's and he was in a funk.  Apparently, the afternoon before, a new intern showed up.  She was a firecracker.  That night she had sex with one guy, ditched him, then had sex with the other guy there, ditched him ...  something about threatening him with a knife ....    and in the morning they found a note from the cook saying that she has fallen in love with the firecracker woman and ran away with her.   The two guys left because the whole thing just seemed way too batshit crazy.  Plus, no more cook.  When Mike told me the story, he said that the two guys cleared out about two hours before I arrived.  

Every person has a different story.  

But between all of these, I think a lot of people show up needing mike to spoon feed them his knowledge - and he really isn't wired for that.  And mike expects them to put in a full day's work - and most of them really aren't wired for that.   Another way to look at it is that they are just getting started on learning stuff and they aren't quite sure what all they need to learn.  Most of them are at natural building level zero.  Maybe a few are at level 1 or 2.   Mike is ready to will his land to somebody that is level 5 to 8.  

I think SKIP helps people get from level zero to level 6.

Yep, I agree with that.  I love this concept!  It's disrupting the traditional path of inheritance and land ownership (typically only favoring the rich or well connected or just plain lucky and undeserving) just like companies such as Google are disrupting the need for college education with skill certs they're now touting.  I also appreciate the example you shared showing what Mike had to put up with.  I suppose it might be a bit much to include such colorful examples in the animation though! :)

I do have one suggestion on the animation content -- at minute 2:05 it starts showing people helping each other up (verifying achievements) and those people doing the same for still others.  The animation style doesn't seem to fit with the rest of it.  I know it's just the start of it, but it sort of stuck out to me as odd looking.

Would be easy to swap out a chainsaw. I think the concept there is clear though. I had more trouble with the guy under the sink being in a completely wrong spot to repair a faucet (fixing is a dirty word, by the way. Spent half my life repairing what others ‘fixed’).

I enjoyed the Mike O. anecdote. (Most) Interns who will sign up for free labor are, by nature, capricious. Permaculture is still a fringe concept, and fringe folk are notoriously strange at times. Even when paid, I have learned, on the few occasions I’ve hired help, that I can only rely on about 1 in 20 ‘kids’ (meaning under 25) and am better off with the slower cantankerous old guy who I know won’t ‘fuck up’ the tractor, as one example. So I see the real value in the skip program as being: you’ve found someone seriously dedicated to this lifestyle. I don’t really care if they can whittle a spoon, but- They didn’t fake their way through all off that just to get free land with no intent to treat it well.

1) "Otis" placed at the top of the list may be confusing to people who haven't been exposed to O.T.I.S. Maybe make the list more relatable to common thoughts of homesteading.

A good kickstarter video is two to three minutes long.  And I think this one is already packed.

I agree.  I brought it up to the animators and they responded with something about how what you see now is a placeholder for a really cool idea they have.  Stand by!

I had some similar thoughts.   I really like what the animators came up with for that one - I just wish for the hugelkultur to be bigger and jungle-y-er.  

Hang on to your thought and run that same eye on the next version and see what you think.

I was thinking of just removing it.  

My current thought is that this little video could be the backstory for our logo gal.

It's a shame that the firecracker woman's energy couldn't be re-directed. Imagine what she could do in the skip program, given the herculean feats she accomplished in a single night. She may have been working a variation on the old joke about the Northwoods Initiation Ritual -- the one involving a quart of whiskey, a bear, a woman, and a single night.

1:01 first item should be "tool care" instead of "tools"?

1:10  excellent!

1:12  with each accomplishment, can their be a video game icon appearing at the top, complete with a "ba-ding!" sound?

1:16 remove the "P"

1:26 it looks like she is not near enough to the faucet she is mending

1:56  maybe "the next levels" are shown with stuff being added in and sudden, big zoom outs?

2:00  can we show the guy actually whittling the spoon?

2:01 maybe this guy has several "levels" completed and he finishes the spoon and gets a "ba-ding" and a next level?

2:15 excited to see this part come to life!

2:19 I especially like the piece of pie on the table.  Can I try to grab that pie?

2:33 can we convey a text message that says "Printing is expensive!  Give us monies!"

2:35  maybe it can end with the same eyes and eybrows we started with?

I guess for the first second and last second i was imagining something like this.   This makes for room at the top for words at the end.

At .30 As the scene scrolls horizontally, everything has jerky movements. This really hurts my eyes. Black and white are worse than the first color scene. Mentioning it just in case it wasn't one of the planned improvements.

1:20 girl with ax felling tree. Could you turn ax over so it does not look so dangerous if you want to keep ax for limbing or change to a saw?

Hmm, yes the "Gimme money" might sound good verbally but when written down it might seem a bit brash.  

Maybe a change to "Please give us monies" would be better.

I'm gonna step in and say "printing is expensive!  Give us monies!" falls into the space of my own personal humor needs and artistic choices.  And while there can be debate over which way ultimately brings in more coin, I'm just gonna say "keeping it!"  :)
