Anybody want Live video of the Garden Master Course

Way too many people have asked if we are going to video the class.  There have been lots of side conversations about what would we need to do this.  We now have starlink.  We have an audio mixing board.  Will says he will do it, and has given me a list of gear to buy - a few thousand bucks.  So there will be a few cameras and the powerpoint stuff all being fed into the video mixer thing and then sent out via starlink.  And ...  maybe zoom?  And then we need to upload about 160 gigs of video afterward.  

Suppose it is $200 per person.  Can we get 40 people that want to pay $200?

What am I not thinking of to pull this off?  

Will has a list of gear for me to buy.   I could buy it tomorrow and it arrives in a few days.  We test it out to see if we are missing any pieces.  

I will pay a bit of something to will.

You will want to have a mic on each of your speakers..  Helen, yourself and anyone on stage who might burst out with a comment.  They each have their own mic that goes into the video camera or mix desk,  then the online audience will hear them speak clearly without the room noise from your on site audience.

The 160 gigs, am I understanding correctly that would be the video files of the course?

I would have trouble tuning in live and watching, but would gladly pay to get the videos after the fact.

Would if I could :)  BTW, what is the course fee?  (not to mention the cost of travel, etc.)

I would gladly pay that if I could. However, I could pay $25. If enough people could do less it would add up. Like with the kick starter

I wanted to come down so badly but I'm unable to leave town for family reasons, so this would be incredibly convenient.

I would love to be there but $200 is one hell of a deal.  It would cost an arm and a leg to get there so this option is huge.

This is something I am interested in VERY MUCH but not for a few years (cost and time prohibited right now). I hope you keep doing this annually though so I have a chance to participate in person or online some day!

Just go out and buy the equipment you need, you will be using it for future videos, movies.  Then after the master class is done sell movies, digital episodes, pod casts….. 80-90 % of your followers will rent or purchase all that you make

Just my two cents worth, why don't you do a poll asking how many people would be willing to pay $100 or $125.  My suspicion is that you will get 5 times as many people who will fork over that much which would mean you get 2 to 3 times as much money.  

Alternatively tell the folks that the price is going to slowly ratchet down in price as certain sales targets are reached.  That way those who just have to have the video immediately pay a higher price and over time the price gradually ratchets down.  You don't have to advertise the price points or sales targets for the price rachets.  In this way the people who purchased at the initial price know that they wanted to spend a premium to get the course right away.   Those who cannot afford the full price wait patiently until they can get it at a price they can afford.  This way no gets upset and permies makes more money from increased sales albeit at ever lower and lower prices.

However a lot of people who could not afford $200 especially in these trying inflationary times in which we live will wait and eventually get it for a price they can afford.  This is similar to what Amazon does only in reverse.  Amazon sets a low price point and then adjusts the price up and then down and up and down to find the price that maximizes their profits.  You are setting a reasonable price but one that may be higher than the maximum profit point which micro economics courses always fantasized about being able to find.  Now of course Amazon does this in real time, not that they advertise this fact.

Another thought is to have people register to buy the course and select a waiting period.  A longer waiting period would yield a lower price.  They would have to pay say a $25 dollar deposit and after waiting 6 months to a year they could get the course for an additional $100, making the total price $125.  You book 20% of the money immediately and under this scheme the base price could remain at $200, but you provide 1, 2, or even 3 different waiting period with successively reduced prices.  Just some thoughts on how to increase profits and also make the product available to a wider audience.

I need to be respectful to the people that bought tickets and are coming out here.  I feel that offering a live video of the event for $20 is disrespectful to the in-person folks.  

I think $200 is the very cheapest I can go.  In fact, $200 might be a little too cheap.

Clarification please:  Is the $200 for livestream only, or will there be videos so that a purchaser can watch/learn on their own time?  If the latter, sign me up -- but too many days on the computer if livestream is the only option.

The current plan is to make the recorded stuff available later.

I would be interested in the videos posted afterwards if they're included, but my internet is nowhere near good enough to watch a live stream. I think it's a very good idea though!

I'm glad you're recording this.  If I could have gotten off of work, I would have come out to the actual course so I won't be able to watch the live stream.  Can you clarify if buying the livestream is also purchasing the recorded videos afterwards too or should I wait for the recorded videos to be released to buy them?  Thanks!

Yes.  Of course, it might take us a while to get the recorded stuff in place.   And we are already talking about "what if it needs editing?"

So, to be very clear:  buying the live thing will also get you a recorded copy.  It might take a while and it might be unedited, but you get a recorded copy.

I can't commit now because I am po' folk but I am glad this will be recorded. This seems to be exactly the course I need. We have pretty similar climates during the growing season and my local master gardeners are a bunch of tools.

I will be very interested if you include an edited video of the course.
