We woke up to another 4 inches of snow this morning with it still coming down thick.  Luckily, most of the last bit had melted away thanks to a couple warm days that will hopefully return soon.  First things first, four of us grabbed snow shovels and started clearing the drivewaye and paths.  Stephen split for the tractor and took care of the lab portion so we could get in later and Fred could get out.

With the sawmill running a little better than it has been for a while and lumber production back online, we all agreed a little rearranging and storage optimizing was needed.  After our roads were opened and cleared - set for the sun to melt what it could - we decided to take some of our more unsightly wood scraps and design some shelves.  I'm sure Stephen will do a show and tell of how he put those plans to use in the afternoon.  

The afternoon was back at the sawmill cranking out our favorite 3/8 lumber planks at a swift pace, at least for a little while. Grey and I have made a couple big improvements with regards to configuration, setup and calibration but we continue to find smaller adjustments that make the milling faster or more efficient.  It's certainly a different set of challenges in the winter when the minute amounts of water in the sawdust make a kind of frozen wood morter where things should lay flat or else they show up half way into a cut.  All in all, the machine becomes a little less temperamental and a little more nuanced everyday time I use it.

4:30 rolls In faster than usual on Tuesdays and it's time to set sawmill analysis aside and get to making tacos and having discussions.  

It's been a day and to all a goodnight.

Personally, I wanted to use a section I'd cut early this spring. As I expecting, it was pretty hard to work with but yielded to a sharp Axe.

There'll be many more pots of soba this winter, so I thought I'd try something else i've been wanting to for a while - not quite as quick to widle out of a log as one might think. A couple sets from black locust and the lighter ones are saskatoon.
