Some busy work after the morning meal and classroom prep hustle. Steve and Grey unpack a truck load of blinds.

Here at Wheaton Labs we take science and its mechanisms of rigorous integrity literally.

Our first moose sighting at the lab this year. Could this be the same adolescent youngster that I spotted last year at Alerton Abbey?
Go with the flow that only you know, and consider the rest as sketchy at best. Far be it from me to try and turn moss into a tree - for moss has a beauty same as carpet has a duty. Call me Apple, I require a minimum number of chill hours to be fruitful and crush.
Clear winter nights with a radial.border around here are rare.

The pine bough roof held the snow off for what it's worth. We needed something more mobile so the more permanent structure can be built.

All of us out in the crisp AM air cleaning and bucking the big pine downed yesterday. Odd both of these trees apparently succumbed to a type of mold/infection.
mega-rabbit.jpg
Daniel and I out on the lab this afternoon looking for project materials for tomorrow's half holiday and noticed these tracks. I know rabbit track patterns but these are too big to believe. Maybe it's hunting bobcats.

Another forest anomaly, blue sap, bird crap or fir frosting? Judging by the taste, I'd say the juries still out...

Are there snowshoe hares in the area?

That colour... it's like nothing I've ever seen before... better not drink the water...

I've never seen one here before but that would make sense. If they're white like the pics from a quick search than they're just about invisible too. Thanks for chiming in and putting that species of hare on my radar. It appears Montana still has a few surprises left.
Hah that was an odd movie but the sap was legit.

An unusually large pine downed the other day in time for projects. A few splitting logs, a couple Axe targets, a few project pieces and lots of fire wood.

The sawbuck is a mythical piece in conifer country where lims are scrawny compared to trunk. Despite the odds, we found a deformed for that might just work.

trimming the sawbuck with a Christmas gift - shiny new oak bucksaw. A lot like a bowsaw but it more portable, pretty and tighty!

It was a long shot but we gave it a solid go. Turns out meticulous material selection and the ecological limitations implied have a relation to rational acquisition. We'll have to finish this one up another day.

With the weather holding out and being in the low 40's it was a extra motivation to see what I could do about the unfinished Proenneke day projects.

So that last log was just for practice..ehem. I found another flow state log within reach and started hacking.

Horizontal plunge cut first and then a couple rough marks to stay lined up for the vertical cuts.
pi-seat-1.jpg
The tree that this buck bit came from ended from an infection that left some pretty interesting marks in the grain.
pi-chair-2.jpg
The moisture content of this log had to be well over 30% and I was having more fun shaving away bits than actually getting anywhere.

I'll let it dry out and then I've got some solar methods to make those crazy spiral patterns around the core pop and become the art. A chair that decorated itself.
