Nice centipede? in that last pic!
Oh nice, that's the kind of primary clues that i can grab onto about the birch trees. I've only seen them as something that looked like instant death foam growing out of a tree as well but there's a few pics of chaga on a search that make this one look like a dusty old ancient one. I actually did do a little research before I speculated tho. If one does a very quick image search for "chaga" you'll see a much more vibrant version among the instant death looking, apparently true chaga. Funny the stuff above it on the same tree looks closer to the actual thing.
Centipede eh i hope not.. heh they kinda freak me out. I'm a much bigger fan of the millipede but I didn't accost it to find out. Just appreciated the interesting gold high-lights among the fungus.
Go with the flow that only you know, and consider the rest as sketchy at best. Far be it from me to try and turn moss into a tree - for moss has a beauty same as carpet has a duty. Call me Apple, I require a minimum number of chill hours to be fruitful and crush.
