Someone suggested bound button holes.

Would that work?

Yup. So long as they're sturdy and big enough to support the weight of the cape.  Dogs are easier, but buttons could definitely work.

R...., every way of closing a cape, cloak, coat has its advantages and disadvantages. Like others here I would not do buttonholes in this fabric. But you are the one who decides ....

For something this thick, buttonholes are possible but would be rather a pain in the backside. Toggles, with loops, would avoid that and would look very nice. You could even do some fingerloop braid for the loops, maybe with a little leather patch for reinforcement of the loop attachment, and have it be fully customized. Got any yarn left from the weaving? Matchy-matchy!

Just so we're all on the same wavelength, toggles and frogs are essentially the same thing.

Really? I thought frogs were the ones made out of curlicues of rope tied and sewn with a monkey's hand knot for the "toggle" equivalent, like you see on a lot of Oriental coats? I've always thought of "toggles" being more like Shawn is describing with leather holding a loop on one side, and leather going through an elongated cylinder out of bone, wood, antler or plastic (let's be realistic about modern ones!) with one end a bit pointy. Yes - they use the same principle, but are the words actually interchangeable?

The type of closure is the same, the materials vary. But, yes - the Chinese version is typically a monkey-fist knot(so why would they call it a frog?? ), but the mechanics are the same.

I FINALLY found the clasps that will be perfect for this cloak.

It took a while but I am so excited!  Ordered and they should be here in a couple of weeks then I can get to work on the final video.

It was perfect timing today.  We got snow overnight and I managed to get up before the sun to film the footage I need to finish the finishing video.

Now to put it all together.

Here we are.  There is still snow on the ground so it still counts as winter.

What an enchanting video. The sewing was beautiful and I know that feeling of apprehension before cutting something out. Great joy!

That's some very fine craft work. Also major props on the video, music and narration. You're a triple-threat times three (if I counted right.) Brava!

I think the cloak is incredibly beautiful and I love wearing them! It’s never that cold around here but once upon a time I was confined to a wheelchair and it’s amazing how cold I could get just sitting somewhere with the AC running.  A cloak was the perfect garment! It goes easily from being a coat warding off the rain or cold to being a lap robe or a blanket without bunching uncomfortably around the hips or pulling on my neck.

You have created a thing of service and beauty and I am terribly impressed! Congratulations on your accomplishment!

Perfect end to a great series. I loved the sheeps' reaction and curiosity. Maybe it smelled familiar? The Tolkien quote at the end was a great touch too.  Well done, R! Both the cloak and the videos.

Thank you everyone.

To think,  that was less than one cotswold fleece and we've just finished shearing 20 more. I've got a lot more spinning to do.

I ended up selling the cloak this winter.  I'm so happy it went to a loving home and the person often travels to the mountains in the winter so it will get a lot more use with her than with me.

It was interesting altering it to fit.  I ended up undoing the side seams then using the patter that I thankfully hadn't tossed out, and cutting it to a smaller size.  Then resewing.  No video as I was in a hurry to get it done before they left on Holday.
