We are currently thinking of launching on thursday, april 1 - no foolin!

I think the video is ready.  But I've watched it so many times I might not be able to see problems anymore.  Can you spot anything?

The cover is coming along nicely.   And we think that the primary kickstarter image will be the book on the left side and the "hero" (gal in overalls) on the right side.

We think we will take the first stab at making a kickstarter page later today.

There is a lot of work to do and I think it is wise to have a public thread here for all the people that are working on this to have a central place to sort out all the deets.

Now is the time for anybody to sign up for the kickback program by replying to this thread:

      https://permies.com/t/kickback

There are now 25 items in the earlybird stuff - all new stuff

      https://permies.com/w/earlybird

Nicole,

I think it might be time to start making some of the banner stuff.  Once the kickstarter is launched, then we will want to create a referal code for each banner.

We are going to create the kickstarter page with a short name because if you use a long name, then kickstarter gives you an insanely long URL.   So we start name and change it later.

title:  SKIP: A book connecting industrious people with land owners

blurb:  A framework to connect industrious people with elderly land owners. Skip the rat race, skip the college debt and skip the mortgage.

goal $8860

category:  publishing / non-fiction

risks and challenges:

A lot of kickstarter projects ask for funding before the creator has done much of anything. Before they have any skin in the game. We have been working on this book for six years and have already finished writing the whole thing and revised them numerous times along the way. We have brought this project as far as we can before paying for artwork, editing, layout, printing, and a few other bits and bobs. So all of the challenges normal writers face are behind us. Now we face the exciting world of “self pub.” And …  every adventure always has a bit of comedy.  We are worried about the current minefield around shipping costs, which could affect our printing costs.  We have not yet decided on a structural editor - and trying somebody new is always a gamble.

We are so passionate about this that we set a low goal amount.  If we’re barely funded, we are prepared to cover the difference to make sure this book gets out!

I think it might be time to start making some of the banner stuff.  Once the kickstarter is launched, then we will want to create a referal code for each banner.

Got it!

Question: We have a BUNCH of banners made up for SKIP event as well as SKIP forum. During the kickstarter, should I made all the SKIP forum ads (and any relevant SKIP event ads) link to the kickstarter instead?

I'm also assuming I need to make graphics for the Backer Levels, too.

I'm assuming I'll do it like I did last time, just with fonts /colors/items to match the SKIP book. This is what I did last time:

Building a Better World in Your Backyard, Instead of Being Angry at the Bad Guys was my 8th Kickstarter. This book is a rich collection of things you can do at home that make a huge, positive, global difference. Without politics or being angry at bad guys. This book focuses on adding luxury to your life instead of sacrifice. And the frosting on the cake is saving a lot of money. I believe that if 100 million people read my book, most global problems would disappear.

"Ponds" is one of three movies in the World Domination Gardening DVD set. The cool thing is that we weren't even done building the pond when it rained on the second night of the workshop - and we woke up to a full pond. We finished the pond the next day, and there wasn't another drop of rain for four months - but there was still water in the pond.

"Building a Cob Style Rocket Mass Heater" is a 2-hour movie from the 8-DVD Better Wood Heat: DIY Rocket Mass Heaters set. It features the build of the cob-style rocket mass heater at Cooper Cabin, and another cob-style rocket mass heater at the tipi. The coolest thing about the tipi footage is the interview with its occupants in the tipi at 26 degrees below zero (F). Spoiler: they were warm and toasty.

Join our past Kickstarter supporters in a place where you can talk about stuff without the prying eyes of google or "them.

Maybe in the "Candy" level, they get 2 slices of pie? It seems there's interest in getting PIE, and that might motivate more people to do Candy rather than just Thanks?

Nope.  They keep doing what they have been doing.

Instead, we will go to the top of that page and make a fat link to the kickstarter.

I hope that sometime today (or tonight) we will have the primary kickstarter image.  That means tomorrow, we will put together the official kickstarter page for the first time.

The plan is to launch at 2pm (mountain time), thursday April 1 - no foolin!

What are we not thinking of?  What else do we need to add to our launch checklist?

Shortly after the kickstarter launches, we should put some stuff into the kickstarter FAQ.   Any suggestions on what should go into the kickstarter FAQ?

International shipping is a joke.  At least from the US.  We're currently planning a couple options as mentioned in the top post of this thread.

If you pledge at the $65 level, you get 6 physical books and the cheapest way to get them to you is to print in/near your country and send them to you from there.  That's why there is a (US only) note on the signed copies, BWB and playing cards.  To ship them all from the US was horribly expensive and to print the books in your region and ship the rest from here was equally expensive.

We're bringing back the Virgin Islands loophole.  So if you want all the goodies at the $65 level (or higher levels) and you only want electronic versions of the books, you can skip the exorbitant shipping by telling Kickstarter you live in the Virgin Islands.  This works for people living anywhere in the world.  They'll tack on $0 for shipping and we'll be good to go.  If you change your mind and later want physical books, it becomes a total mess so please don't select that option unless you're sure you don't want physical books.

If you want all the goodies at the $65 or higher level and only want 1 physical book we might be able to find a way to create a cheaper shipping option by finding another location like the Virgin Islands to use for that.  But I'm not sure if the effort would be worth it.  If enough people would want that option created we can look into it.

maybe international shipping could be one Q and the virgin islands thing could be another Q.

From the BWB KS:

What do I do if I have questions about getting all the reward candy?
How do I increase my pledge?
Can you make a reward so I can get more? Like maybe a case price?
What will the "language rating" be?
Why is the international shipping so expensive?
Why are some rewards earlier than others?
Why does it cost more to have Paul come and speak at my event than it does to have Shawn come?
Are you set up with kickbooster or something similar?
I would like to interview both of you for my podcast. Are you okay with that?
Are the rewards at the $150 and $200 level downloadable or streaming only?
I backed your project. Where are my rewards?
Are there any advance reviews?
The stretch goal says that Michael Judd's book must be claimed "within 48 hours"... within 48 hours of what? And how?
Some of the stretch goals are for a limited number of people. How do you decide who gets them?

As for "What will the language rating be?"  The answer for BWB was:

The language rating will be: Perfect! We even made up some new words! Like “VORP!” Vorpitty vorp vorp.

One of our reviewers was contemplating giving the book to people that choose to fear and hate certain words. He counted every spec of potential hate fuel in the book.

To gauge how we did, we looked to the IMDB parental guide stuff for the top 10 (in monies) movies of 2018. It looks like we would be rated “mild” - same as the Disney cartoon “Incredibles 2.” “Deadpool 2” was rated “severe.”

The reviewer’s report points out that we say “own your own shit” twice, “damn” four times and we quote an older document that says “The second observation is that most people find folks one level back to be ignorant and people two levels back seem like assholes.“ That’s it. That’s everything. Apparently, “shit”, “damn” and “assholes” don’t have the punch they had 40 years ago. Since there are about 20 times more total words in our book than the disney movie, I wonder if we score “milder” than the Disney movie. Which is the mildest of the top ten movies of 2018. So we would probably be rated “too mild.” If we want to reach a wider audience, I suppose we should bump the spice and excitement up a few notches just to get to “popular Disney movie level” (or to prove that this book is not under the thumb of some hate group), but I choose to focus on this kickstarter instead.

Of course, if you ask me to come speak to your group, I promise I will use the FULL beauty of the English language. Word police be damned!

I think the SKIP book doesn't have any of "the full beauty of the english language."   Or am I just not remembering?

I don't believe there is any language in it that could be considered offensive at all.  Some discussion of poop and pee but kids books have that these days

Hmmmm ....   maybe ....

It could be good for giving to people where we are trying to give them a physical book, but they want to see a digital version first.

Suppose there is a high school counselor - maybe we give that person six ebook gift codes.  ??

It looks amazing! I quite like the video, and the two (more) cracks at explaining the thing.

Looks great.

Descriptions are really good - they explain it well enough without too much scrolling. Nice pictures too.

Under rewards there's no option for a single physical book, no description for 'glory', and jumbo doesn't say how many books. I think it would look better with pictures for all of the reward options too.

The "rewards" part of "the story" is still under construction.  It might be another day or two until that is ready for prime time.

Are you able to upload a bigger image for the table of contents, or link to somewhere where it can be viewed larger? Even doing "view image" on my browser, it's still almost too small to read.

Other than that, it looks fantastic, and I've clicked the button to be notified when it goes live!

On a related note, do you think the permies community would be interested in the new SEEDS currency based on building a regenerative economy?

here is the website that is going to be released on earth day: http://34.245.191.151/

the project is already live and current website can be seen here: https://www.joinseeds.com/

what i am thinking is this — i can write a proposal in the SEEDS community where the first X number of people who donate to your kickstarter will receive $10 worth of SEEDS in return, essentially paying them back the amount they donated while also allowing them to experiment with this new currency system

i believe there can definitely be some synergy between permaculture communities and this new SEEDS currency system and coming platform

i can explain more but i don't want to bog down the thread — feel free to email me at spiritloveroot@gmail.com if you feel there is worthy mutual benefit (or whatever way of communication seems most suitable to you)

I uploaded the Table of Contents at a super high quality, but it looks like kickstarter shrank it down. So, I turned the image into a link to the full-sized picture. Does it work for you now?

Thank you! The artists who did the video and the book did a fantastic job! I had fun snagging their images and working them into the graphics for Kickstarter.

Paul's vision for the rewards section is for it to just give more details about the rewards that need to be explained. Since "1 physical book" (or "the ebook") doesn't require much explanation, he didn't think it should have a section in the main "story." I'm wondering, though, if more people are like me and like having the Reward explanation section mention all the rewards, so all the info is in one place. I find it confusing to look back and forth between the side-bar and the explanation.

Maybe create a thread for seeds?  I would like to know how it compares to bitcoin.  I spent 15 minutes looking over the site and I still feel pretty lost.  So, yeah, a new thread would be nice.

We got a revised image for the kickstarter that has a slightly different feel to it.  Less shadowy and more bright.  Thoughts?

I like the style of the first one better. It matches everything else, and seems more natural. It's easier on my eyes, too.

I think the first picture could be improved by removing the yellowish highlights (those make the down the blue more brownish), and maybe brightening up the colors slightly.

I actually used used the "Color replacement tool" in photohop to make the blues all the same, and also to brighten them up just a bit. (When making the graphics on the kickstarter page, I actually did this quite a bit, removing the yellow highlights to simplify the images for the smaller sizes. )

No more yellow highlights, and a bit brighter blue on the overalls.

Should "Rocket" be "Rocket Mass Heaters" or something more descriptive?  Maybe I'm just being too detail oriented.  I've attached a screenshot.
Others probably have mentioned this, but I think it would be good to show an example or two of what is going to be in the book.
It looks really good though, and the links that I checked out all worked fine.

Good question John!  The badge is actually titled Rocket.  It encompasses RMH's, rocket ovens, rocket water heaters and a variety of other rocket related activities.

Thanks, this shows how much I need the SKIP book... when I saw that all I could think of is SpaceX and a great rapid unscheduled disassembly. :)

We're polishing the last few bits of the Rewards section down lower in the main Story part of the kickstarter.  It should be updated any minute now.  Then I think Paul gets to hit the big scary "Send to Kickstarter for an internal review to see if they approve" button.  I envision a magical conference room on a tropical island where happy people look at kickstarters, fall in love with ours in particular and approve them quickly.

Once it's approved by them, our launch date is in our control.  Yay!

(nervous little dance)

Paul just hit the big scary "Send to Kickstarter for an internal review to see if they approve" button.  It could take minutes or several days to get through their standard review.  Fingers crossed!!!

I see that there are now 110 people following the project (clicked on "notify me on launch")!

I need a new interior decorator. This tiny ad just painted every room in my house purple.
